Observed Orbital Eccentricities
For 391 spectroscopic and visual binaries with known orbital elementsand having B0-F0 IV or V primaries, we collected the derivedeccentricities. As has been found by others, those binaries with periodsof a few days have been circularized. However, those with periods up toabout 1000 or more days show reduced eccentricities that asymptoticallyapproach a mean value of 0.5 for the longest periods. For those binarieswith periods greater than 1000 days their distribution of eccentricitiesis flat from 0 to nearly 1, indicating that in the formation of binariesthere is no preferential eccentricity. The binaries with intermediateperiods (10-100 days) lack highly eccentric orbits.

Adaptive Optics Photometry and Astrometry of Binary Stars
We present astrometric and photometric measurements of 39 binary starsmade with the adaptive optics system on the 3.6 m AdvancedElectro-Optical System (AEOS) telescope, taken from 2002 November to2003 March. The binaries have separations ranging from 0.08" to 5.11"and differential magnitudes ranging from 0.096 to 7.9. Also, we includea list of observations of 23 known binaries that we were unable toresolve. In the process of these measurements, we discovered three newcompanions to two previously known binary stars. We also discuss theeffects of scintillation and anisoplanatism on measurements of binarystar photometry in adaptive optics images. Suggestions on how tominimize these effects are then given.Based on observations made at the Maui Space Surveillance Systemoperated by Detachment 15 of the US Air Force Research Laboratory'sDirected Energy Directorate.

A near-infrared stellar spectral library: I. H-band spectra.
This paper presents the H band near-infrared (NIR) spectral library of135 solar type stars covering spectral types O5-M3 and luminosityclasses I-V as per MK classification. The observations were carried outwith 1.2 meter Gurushikhar Infrared Telescope (GIRT), at Mt. Abu, Indiausing a NICMOS3 HgCdTe 256 x 256 NIR array based spectrometer. Thespectra have a moderate resolution of 1000 (about 16 A) at the H bandand have been continuum shape corrected to their respective effectivetemperatures. This library and the remaining ones in J and K bands oncereleased will serve as an important database for stellar populationsynthesis and other applications in conjunction with the newly formedlarge optical coude feed stellar spectral library of Valdes et al.(2004). The complete H-Band library is available online at: http://vo.iucaa.ernet.in/~voi/NIR_Header.html

The Indo-US Library of Coudé Feed Stellar Spectra
We have obtained spectra for 1273 stars using the 0.9 m coudéfeed telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. This telescope feedsthe coudé spectrograph of the 2.1 m telescope. The spectra havebeen obtained with the no. 5 camera of the coudé spectrograph anda Loral 3K×1K CCD. Two gratings have been used to provide spectralcoverage from 3460 to 9464 Å, at a resolution of ~1 Å FWHMand at an original dispersion of 0.44 Å pixel-1. For885 stars we have complete spectra over the entire 3460 to 9464 Åwavelength region (neglecting small gaps of less than 50 Å), andpartial spectral coverage for the remaining stars. The 1273 stars havebeen selected to provide broad coverage of the atmospheric parametersTeff, logg, and [Fe/H], as well as spectral type. The goal ofthe project is to provide a comprehensive library of stellar spectra foruse in the automated classification of stellar and galaxy spectra and ingalaxy population synthesis. In this paper we discuss thecharacteristics of the spectral library, viz., details of theobservations, data reduction procedures, and selection of stars. We alsopresent a few illustrations of the quality and information available inthe spectra. The first version of the complete spectral library is nowpublicly available from the National Optical Astronomy Observatory(NOAO) via ftp and http.

Tidal Effects in Binaries of Various Periods
We found in the published literature the rotational velocities for 162B0-B9.5, 152 A0-A5, and 86 A6-F0 stars, all of luminosity classes V orIV, that are in spectroscopic or visual binaries with known orbitalelements. The data show that stars in binaries with periods of less thanabout 4 days have synchronized rotational and orbital motions. Stars inbinaries with periods of more than about 500 days have the samerotational velocities as single stars. However, the primaries inbinaries with periods of between 4 and 500 days have substantiallysmaller rotational velocities than single stars, implying that they havelost one-third to two-thirds of their angular momentum, presumablybecause of tidal interactions. The angular momentum losses increase withdecreasing binary separations or periods and increase with increasingage or decreasing mass.

Speckle Observations of Binary Stars with the WIYN Telescope. IV. Differential Photometry
Five hundred seventy-six magnitude difference measures are presented for260 binary stars. These measures are derived from CCD-based speckleobservations taken at the WIYN 3.5 m telescope at Kitt Peak NationalObservatory during the period 1997-2000. Separations of the systemsrange from over 1" down to near the diffraction limit of the telescope.A study of multiple measures of the same targets indicates that themeasures have a typical uncertainty of better than 0.13 mag per 2 minuteobservation, and that multiple observations can be averaged to arrive atsmaller uncertainties. Results presented here are also compared, insofaras it is possible, with measures in the Hipparcos Catalogue and toprevious studies using adaptive optics. No major systematic errors wereidentified. The WIYN Observatory is a joint facility of the University ofWisconsin-Madison, Indiana University, Yale University, and the NationalOptical Astronomy Observatory.

STELIB: A library of stellar spectra at R ~ 2000
We present STELIB, a new spectroscopic stellar library, available athttp://webast.ast.obs-mip.fr/stelib. STELIB consists of an homogeneouslibrary of 249 stellar spectra in the visible range (3200 to 9500Å), with an intermediate spectral resolution (la 3 Å) andsampling (1 Å). This library includes stars of various spectraltypes and luminosity classes, spanning a relatively wide range inmetallicity. The spectral resolution, wavelength and spectral typecoverage of this library represents a substantial improvement overprevious libraries used in population synthesis models. The overallabsolute photometric uncertainty is 3%.Based on observations collected with the Jacobus Kaptein Telescope,(owned and operated jointly by the Particle Physics and AstronomyResearch Council of the UK, The Nederlandse Organisatie voorWetenschappelijk Onderzoek of The Netherlands and the Instituto deAstrofísica de Canarias of Spain and located in the SpanishObservatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos on La Palma which is operated bythe Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias), the 2.3 mtelescope of the Australian National University at Siding Spring,Australia, and the VLT-UT1 Antu Telescope (ESO).Tables \ref{cat1} to \ref{cat6} and \ref{antab1} to A.7 are onlyavailable in electronic form at http://www.edpsciences.org. Kinematics of Hipparcos Visual Binaries. II. Stars with Ground-Based Orbital Solutions
This paper continues kinematical investigations of the Hipparcos visualbinaries with known orbits. A sample, consisting of 804 binary systemswith orbital elements determined from ground-based observations, isselected. The mean relative error of their parallaxes is about 12% andthe mean relative error of proper motions is about 4%. However, even 41%of the sample stars lack radial velocity measurements. The computedGalactic velocity components and other kinematical parameters are usedto divide the stars with known radial velocities into kinematical agegroups. The majority (92%) of binaries from the sample are thin diskstars, 7.6% have thick disk kinematics and only two binaries have halokinematics. Among them, the long-period variable Mira Ceti has a verydiscordant {Hipparcos} and ground-based parallax values. From the wholesample, 60 stars are ascribed to the thick disk and halo population. There is an urgent need to increase the number of the identified halobinaries with known orbits and substantially improve the situation withradial velocity data for stars with known orbits.

Speckle Interferometry at the US Naval Observatory. VIII.
The results of 2044 speckle interferometric observations of doublestars, made with the 26 inch (66 cm) refractor of the US NavalObservatory, are presented. Each speckle interferometric observation ofa system represents a combination of over a thousand short-exposureimages. These observations are averaged into 1399 mean positions andrange in separation from 0.16" to 14.97", with a mean separation of2.51". This is the eighth in a series of papers presenting measuresobtained with this system and covers the period 2001 March 18 through2001 December 30.

Speckle Observations of Binary Stars with the WIYN Telescope. II. Relative Astrometry Measures during 1998-2000
Five hundred twelve relative astrometry measures are presented for 253double stars, including 53 double stars discovered by Hipparcos. In 15cases, relative astrometry is reported for the first time for newlyconfirmed pairs. In addition, 20 high-quality nondetections ofcompanions are reported for stars suspected of being nonsingle byHipparcos. Observations were taken using a fast-readout CCD camerasystem at the WIYN 3.5 m telescope at Kitt Peak, Arizona. In comparingthese measures with ephemeris predictions for binary stars with verywell known orbits, we find that the measurement precision is better than3 mas in separation and 1° in position angle per individualobservation. Measurement precision and detection capabilities are fullydiscussed, and confirmed orbital motion is reported in four cases of theHipparcos double star discoveries. The WIYN Observatory is a jointfacility of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Indiana University,Yale University, and the National Optical Astronomy Observatory.

Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). The resulting sample includes some 2150 stars withhomogenized rotational velocities. Based on observations made atObservatoire de Haute Provence (CNRS), France. The Spatial Distribution and Kinematics of Stellar Populations in E+A Galaxies
We use long-slit spectroscopic observations of the sample of E+Agalaxies described by Zabludoff et al. to constrain the nature of theprogenitors and remnants of the E+A phase of galaxy evolution. Wemeasure spatially resolved kinematic properties of the young (<~1Gyr) and old (>~few Gyr) stellar populations. The young stellarpopulations are more centrally concentrated than the older populations, but they are not confined to the galaxy core (radius <~1 kpc). Thekinematics of the old stellar population place 16 of 20 of our E+As on atrend parallel to the Faber-Jackson relation that is offset by ~0.6 magin R. Eighteen of 20 E+As have v/σ<1. As the young stars inthese systems evolve, the luminosity offset will disappear, and theremnants will be pressure-supported systems that lie on theFaber-Jackson relation. Although Zabludoff et al. spectroscopicallyselected the most extreme E+A galaxies in the local volume, the sampleis kinematically diverse: velocity dispersions range from <~30 kms-1 to ~200 km s-1 over a luminosity range ofMR=-19 to -22+5logh. Combining these results with an estimateof the number of galaxies that experience an E+A phase, we conclude thatthe E+A phase of galaxy evolution is important in the development of alarge fraction of spheroid-dominated galaxies over a wide range ofluminosities and masses. Our kinematic observations, together withevidence that E+As have recently evolved from a vigorous star-formingphase to a quiescent phase (e.g., Couch & Sharples; Caldwell et al.)and that many have tidal features consistent with disklike progenitors(Zabludoff et al.), indicate that these galaxies are undergoing atransformation from gas-rich, star-forming, rotationally supported,disk-dominated galaxies into gas-poor, quiescent, pressure-supported,spheroid-dominated galaxies.

Radial velocity and magnetic field observations with TRAFICOS
>From spectroscopic observations of some early- and late-type starswe determined radial velocity and longitudinal magnetic field values. The spectra have been performed with observations at the 2-m telescopeof the Thüringer Landessternwarte Tautenburg, equipped with theÉchelle spectrograph TRAFICOS and in many cases with Zeemananalyzer. For individual stars we give some comments about the radialvelocities and magnetic field values, and about any possiblevariability.

ICCD Speckle Observations of Binary Stars. XXIII. Measurements during 1982-1997 from Six Telescopes, with 14 New Orbits
We present 2017 observations of 1286 binary stars, observed by means ofspeckle interferometry using six telescopes over a 15 year period from1982 April to 1997 June. These measurements constitute the 23dinstallment in CHARA's speckle program at 2 to 4 m class telescopes andinclude the second major collection of measurements from the MountWilson 100 inch (2.5 m) Hooker Telescope. Orbital elements are alsopresented for 14 systems, seven of which have had no previouslypublished orbital analyses.

Measurements of Binary Stars with the Starfire Optical Range Adaptive Optics Systems
To investigate the relative photometry produced by adaptive opticswithin the isoplanatic patch, we observed four binaries, 10 UMa, φUMa, 81 Cnc, and κ UMa, with adaptive optics using natural guidestars on the 3.5 m telescope, as well as one binary, β Del, withadaptive optics using a laser guide star on the 1.5 m telescope at theStarfire Optical Range. Iterative blind deconvolution (IBD) andparametric blind deconvolution (PBD) techniques were used to postprocessthe data, which produced consistent results for position angles, separations, and magnitude differences. We also conducted simulationsthat verify the agreement between IBD and PBD and compared theirmeasurements to truth data. From the results of both observations andsimulations, we conclude that adaptive optics is well suited forproviding not only position angles and separations for close binaries, but also good relative magnitudes without quadrant ambiguity. From theobservations, we find that the secondary of 81 Cnc (separation=0.12")appears to be 0.12 mag brighter than the primary at 0.85 μm and is,therefore, cooler. We also derive a new orbit for κ UMa(separation=0.067"). Our results for β Del (ADS 14073) havesignificantly improved precision compared with the 1998 analyses of thesame data by ten Brummelaar and colleagues and by Roberts, tenBrummelaar, and Mason.

Molecular shocks and the massive outflow in NGC 3079
The edge-on SBc galaxy NGC 3079 is the site of a very energetic nuclearoutflow, which has been modelled as a disc-focused wind. Our 2-μmspectra of the central regions show strong emission in the upsilon=1-0S(1) line of molecular hydrogen and weaker emission in other H_2transitions. The Brgamma recombination line of HI is just detected; allthe lines are superimposed on a strong stellar continuum with absorptionfeatures of CO and neutral metals characteristic of late-type giantstars. The S(1) line is ~630 km s^-1 wide (at 20 per cent of the peakintensity); this is consistent with the rotation of the molecularcomplex near the nucleus. A K-band image shows a resolved (~2-arcsecFWHM) central feature but no signs of complex circumnuclear structure;the central feature is probably a small stellar `bulge' heavily obscuredto the west. A map of the inner 45 arcsec of the galaxy at 800-μmwavelength shows a central source with flux density ~350 mJy,superimposed on emission from the galaxian disc. The strength of the H_2emission relative to the far-infrared luminosity of the nucleus of NGC3079 is surpassed only by that of the ultraluminous post-merger galaxyNGC 6240. The nuclear bulge and probably also the emission-line sourcesuffer an extinction A_V~7.6 mag and are probably located in arelatively dust-free cavity in a dense circumnuclear molecular disc. Itis argued that, somewhat surprisingly, star formation is not thedominant process in the nuclear vicinity of NGC 3079; the windoriginates in the active nucleus itself. We show that neither X-ray norUV irradiation appears to be an important factor in the excitation ofthe H_2; instead, we conclude that the kinetic energy of fast shocks(velocities >=120 km s^-1) generated by the impact of the outflowfrom the nucleus on the nearby molecular material is being converted toH_2 line emission at about 3 per cent of the efficiency expected inlow-velocity shocks, in evident confirmation of the disc-focused windmodel. Dust heating in the shocks may explain the extended mid-IR sourcesurrounding the nucleus.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Secondary spectrophotometric standards - Mean energy distribution in the spectra of A stars
Forty-nine A stars of IV and V luminosity classes are used to obtainmean spectral energy distributions of stars of different subtypes.Forty-six are in the catalog of 238 secondary spectrophotometricstandards, which are characterized by good agreement between thespectrophotometric data of the Moscow and Alma-Ata catalogs. Three starsare primary standards. Mean energy distributions for all the subtypes ofthe A type in the range 3200-7600 A are presented. The effectivetemperatures obtained from a comparison with the theoretical modelatmospheres of Kurucz (1979) are in satisfactory agreement with theT(eff) scale constructed on the basis of total flux determinations.
