Statistical Constraints for Astrometric Binaries with Nonlinear Motion
Useful constraints on the orbits and mass ratios of astrometric binariesin the Hipparcos catalog are derived from the measured proper motiondifferences of Hipparcos and Tycho-2 (Δμ), accelerations ofproper motions (μ˙), and second derivatives of proper motions(μ̈). It is shown how, in some cases, statistical bounds can beestimated for the masses of the secondary components. Two catalogs ofastrometric binaries are generated, one of binaries with significantproper motion differences and the other of binaries with significantaccelerations of their proper motions. Mathematical relations betweenthe astrometric observables Δμ, μ˙, and μ̈ andthe orbital elements are derived in the appendices. We find a remarkabledifference between the distribution of spectral types of stars withlarge accelerations but small proper motion differences and that ofstars with large proper motion differences but insignificantaccelerations. The spectral type distribution for the former sample ofbinaries is the same as the general distribution of all stars in theHipparcos catalog, whereas the latter sample is clearly dominated bysolar-type stars, with an obvious dearth of blue stars. We point outthat the latter set includes mostly binaries with long periods (longerthan about 6 yr).

3D mapping of the dense interstellar gas around the Local Bubble
We present intermediate results from a long-term program of mapping theneutral absorption characteristics of the local interstellar medium, motivated by the availability of accurate and consistent parallaxes fromthe Hipparcos satellite. Equivalent widths of the interstellar NaID-line doublet at 5890 Å are presented for the lines-of-sighttowards some 311 new target stars lying within ~ 350 pc of the Sun.Using these data, together with NaI absorption measurements towards afurther ~ 240 nearby targets published in the literature (for many ofthem, in the directions of molecular clouds), and the ~ 450lines-of-sight already presented by (Sfeir et al. \cite{sfeir99}), weshow 3D absorption maps of the local distribution of neutral gas towards1005 sight-lines with Hipparcos distances as viewed from a variety ofdifferent galactic projections. The data are synthesized by means of two complementary methods, (i) bymapping of iso-equivalent width contours, and (ii) by densitydistribution calculation from the inversion of column-densities, amethod devised by Vergely et al. (\cite{vergely01}). Our present dataconfirms the view that the local cavity is deficient in cold and neutralinterstellar gas. The closest dense and cold gas ``wall'', in the firstquadrant, is at ~ 55-60 pc. There are a few isolated clouds at closerdistance, if the detected absorption is not produced by circumstellarmaterial. The maps reveal narrow or wide ``interstellar tunnels'' which connectthe Local Bubble to surrounding cavities, as predicted by the model ofCox & Smith (1974). In particular, one of these tunnels, defined bystars at 300 to 600 pc from the Sun showing negligible sodiumabsorption, connects the well known CMa void (Gry et al. \cite{gry85}),which is part of the Local Bubble, with the supershell GSH 238+00+09(Heiles \cite{heiles98}). High latitude lines-of-sight with the smallestabsorption are found in two ``chimneys'', whose directions areperpendicular to the Gould belt plane. The maps show that the LocalBubble is ``squeezed'' by surrounding shells in a complicated patternand suggest that its pressure is smaller than in those expandingregions. We discuss the locations of several HI and molecular clouds. Usingcomparisons between NaI and HI or CO velocities, in some cases we areable to improve the constraints on their distances. According to thevelocity criteria, MBM 33-37, MBM 16-18, UT 3-7, and MBM 54-55 arecloser than ~ 100 pc, and MBM 40 is closer than 80 pc. Dense HI cloudsare seen at less than 90 pc and 85 pc in the directions of the MBM 12and MBM 41-43 clouds respectively, but the molecular clouds themselvesmay be far beyond. The above closest molecular clouds are located at theneutral boundary of the Bubble. Only one translucent cloud, G192-67, isclearly embedded within the LB and well isolated. These maps of the distribution of local neutral interstellar NaI gas arealso briefly compared with the distribution of both interstellar dustand neutral HI gas within 300 pc.Tables 1 and 2 are only available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp:cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/411/447

Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). The resulting sample includes some 2150 stars withhomogenized rotational velocities. Based on observations made atObservatoire de Haute Provence (CNRS), France. Spots and plages on a young main-sequence solar-type star: HD 206860
The young solar type star HD 206860 is known to be aphotometric variable with emission in the core of Ca ii H & K lines, several times more intense than the Sun when observed as a star. Thephotometric and spectroscopic monitoring of HD 206860from near contemporaneous observations at Serra La Nave (Catania, Italy)and at the Observatoire de Haute Provence (OHP, France) shows thatchromospheric spectral-line flux and photometric variations follow thesame period (4.74 days). From Strömgren photometry and Ca ii andHα chromospheric emission clearly anti-correlated variations havebeen found. This result suggests that spots and plages in this singlesolar-type star are spatially associated, as frequently observed for thelargest sun-spot groups and for some very active RS CVn systems. Aspot/plage model applied to the observed flux curves allows a crudereconstruction of the 3D structure of the external atmosphere of thisstar. Based on observations collected at the Observatoire de HauteProvence (CNRS), France, and at the Osservatorio Astrofisico di Catania,Italy

On the HIPPARCOS photometry of chemically peculiar B, A, and F stars
The Hipparcos photometry of the Chemically Peculiar main sequence B, A,and F stars is examined for variability. Some non-magnetic CP stars,Mercury-Manganese and metallic-line stars, which according to canonicalwisdom should not be variable, may be variable and are identified forfurther study. Some potentially important magnetic CP stars are noted.Tables 1, 2, and 3 are available only in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Observation of fine structure in the cold phase of the local interstellar medium using K I absorption
The K I 7699-A resonance absorption line was used to observe a group of18 early-type stars within a 200-pc radius of the sun with asignal-to-noise ratio of 50-250. The interstellar absorptions provide away to 'tag' a cloud via its radial velocity to within +/-1.5 km/s.Based on the hypothesis of pressure confinement, the temperatures of theclouds are estimated at 100 K or less. The mass fraction of the localinterstellar medium (LISM) is found to be high in these clouds, at least80 percent of the total, whereas the filling factor is low, well below10 percent of the total LISM volume. One cloud with high densities andlower temperatures was detected which is thought to be on the edge ofatomic-molecular equilibrium.

'Normal' main sequence AO stars of low rotational velocity
A set of v sin i values has been derived in a homogeneous way for allthe northern unevolved AO stars which are listed in the Bright StarCatalogue and which are known to rotate more slowly than 40 km/s. Themethod used for the v sin i measurement employs the FFT algorithm and isdesigned to make the best use possible of line profiles obtained fromphotographic spectrograms. It is interesting to notice that, from afirst glance analysis of the spectra obtained, the suspicion arises thatAO single stars with atmospheric solar composition are very rare or evennonexistent among slow rotators (v sin i of less than 15 km/s).

ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. I - A survey for duplicity among the bright stars
A survey of a sample of 672 stars from the Yale Bright Star Catalog(Hoffleit, 1982) has been carried out using speckle interferometry onthe 3.6-cm Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in order to establish thebinary star frequency within the sample. This effort was motivated bythe need for a more observationally determined basis for predicting thefrequency of failure of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) fine-guidancesensors to achieve guide-star lock due to duplicity. This survey of 426dwarfs and 246 evolved stars yielded measurements of 52 newly discoveredbinaries and 60 previously known binary systems. It is shown that thefrequency of close visual binaries in the separation range 0.04-0.25arcsec is 11 percent, or nearly 3.5 times that previously known.

AB stars in the southern galactic halo. II - Spectroscopy and radial velocities
A spectroscopic study of over two hundred high latitude stars ofspectral types A and B which compromise a sample of in situ halo fieldstars selected without kinematic bias is discussed. Results arepresented and discussed in detail for the radial velocities and spectralline measurements of the interstellar K lines, weak metallic lines, CaII line equivalent widths, and hydrogen lines. Stellar Ca II K linestrengths are found to correlate quite well with overall metallicity forall cases except Am stars and high luminosity stars. The K lineequivalent widths for all but about five percent of the sample AB starsare normal for metal-poor Population II stars. A few AB stars have nearsolar metallicities and relatively high radial velocities, but no suchstars are found beyond 2-3 kpc from the plane. The large majority of thestars with V = 13.5-15.5 are Population II field blue horizontal branchstars.

The minimum state of dwarf novae
Results are presented for JHK infrared, simultaneous ubvr, and standardUBVrR2 photometry as well as Balmer-line scanner measurements of thedwarf novae SS Cyg, RX And, Z Cam, AH Her, and AB Dra. Observed line andcontinuum intensities are converted to fluxes, and the fluxdistributions over wavelength are analyzed to determine thetemperatures, densities, and contributions of each component and thedisk hot spot at minimum light. The contributions of the hot spot andsecondary star are obtained for each system by comparing the observedflux distributions with those expected for free-free emission from hotspots of various temperatures and for different types of main-sequencesecondaries. The density of the spot is estimated to be about 10 to the15th power per cu cm in all systems at minimum light, and the Balmerlines are found to be optically thick. It is shown that the short-periodsystems have the hottest spots, the length of the light period iscorrelated with the magnitude change from minimum to maximum, andflickering is caused by a temperature change in the spot.
