Short-Period Variable Be Stars Discovered or Confirmed through Self-Correlation Analysis of Hipparcos Epoch Photometry
We have surveyed 277 bright Be stars for short-period (0.2-2 day)photometric variability using self-correlation analysis of Hipparcosepoch photometry. This extends the work of Percy et al.; the methods areas described there. We report the discovery, timescale, and amplitude ofshort-period variability in: HD 7636 (V764 Cas), HD 11606 (V777 Cas), HD13661 (V549 Per), HD 34921, HD 36408, HD 40978, HD 58343 (FW CMa), HD63460 (o Pup), HD 88195 (17 Sex), HD 89353 (AG Ant, HR 4049), HD 129954(CO Cir), HD 158220 (V862 Ara), HD 173219 (V947 Sct), and HD 187567(V1339 Aql). We report the confirmation of short-period variabilityusing an independent form of analysis in HD 52918 (19 Mon), HD 105382(V863 Cen), HD 137387 (κ-1 Aps), HD 157832 (V750 Ara), and HD163868 (V3984 Sgr). These include a β Cephei star (19 Mon), aVega-type star (17 Sex), and a post-asymptotic giant branch B star (HR4049). We find that short-period variability is more prevalent inearly-B stars than in late-B stars. We have found no β Cephei typevariables in our sample of Be stars, other than 19 Mon, which isapparently not a Be star.

The Indo-US Library of Coudé Feed Stellar Spectra
We have obtained spectra for 1273 stars using the 0.9 m coudéfeed telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. This telescope feedsthe coudé spectrograph of the 2.1 m telescope. The spectra havebeen obtained with the no. 5 camera of the coudé spectrograph anda Loral 3K×1K CCD. Two gratings have been used to provide spectralcoverage from 3460 to 9464 Å, at a resolution of ~1 Å FWHMand at an original dispersion of 0.44 Å pixel-1. For885 stars we have complete spectra over the entire 3460 to 9464 Åwavelength region (neglecting small gaps of less than 50 Å), andpartial spectral coverage for the remaining stars. The 1273 stars havebeen selected to provide broad coverage of the atmospheric parametersTeff, logg, and [Fe/H], as well as spectral type. The goal ofthe project is to provide a comprehensive library of stellar spectra foruse in the automated classification of stellar and galaxy spectra and ingalaxy population synthesis. In this paper we discuss thecharacteristics of the spectral library, viz., details of theobservations, data reduction procedures, and selection of stars. We alsopresent a few illustrations of the quality and information available inthe spectra. The first version of the complete spectral library is nowpublicly available from the National Optical Astronomy Observatory(NOAO) via ftp and http.

Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). The resulting sample includes some 2150 stars withhomogenized rotational velocities. Based on observations made atObservatoire de Haute Provence (CNRS), France. Tables \ref{results} and\ref{merging} are only available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.125.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/393/897

Rotational velocities of A-type stars. I. Measurement of v sin i in the southern hemisphere
Within the scope of a Key Programme determining fundamental parametersof stars observed by HIPPARCOS, spectra of 525 B8 to F2-type starsbrighter than V=8 have been collected at ESO. Fourier transforms ofseveral line profiles in the range 4200-4500 Å are used to derivev sin i from the frequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis ofthe sample indicates that measurement error is a function of v sin i andthis relative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 6%on average. The results obtained are compared with data from theliterature. There is a systematic shift from standard values from\citet{Slk_75}, which are 10 to 12% lower than our findings. Comparisonswith other independent v sin i values tend to prove that those fromSlettebak et al. are underestimated. This effect is attributed to thepresence of binaries in the standard sample of Slettebak et al., and tothe model atmosphere they used. Based on observations made at theEuropean Southern Observatory (ESO), La Silla, Chile, in the frameworkof the Key Programme 5-004-43K. A photometric catalogue of southern emission-line stars
We present a catalogue of previously unpublished optical and infraredphotometry for a sample of 162 emission-line objects and shell starsvisible from the southern hemisphere. The data were obtained between1978 and 1997 in the Walraven (WULBV), Johnson/Cousins(UBV(RI)c) and ESO and SAAO near-infrared (JHKLM) photometricsystems. Most of the observed objects are Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars orHAeBe candidates appearing in the list of HAeBe candidates of Théet al. (1994), although several B[e] stars, LBVs and T Tauri stars arealso included in our sample. For many of the stars the data presentedhere are the first photo-electric measurements in the literature. Theresulting catalogue consists of 1809 photometric measurements. Opticalvariability was detected in 66 out of the 116 sources that were observedmore than once. 15 out of the 50 stars observed multiple times in theinfrared showed variability at 2.2 mu m (K band). Based on observationscollected at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile and onobservations collected at the South African Astronomical Observatory.Tables 2-4 are only available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or via http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/380/609

EXPORT: Optical photometry and polarimetry of Vega-type and pre-main sequence stars
This paper presents optical UBVRI broadband photo-polarimetry of theEXPORT sample obtained at the 2.5 m Nordic Optical Telescope. Thedatabase consists of multi-epoch photo-polarimetry of 68pre-main-sequence and main-sequence stars. An investigation of thepolarization variability indicates that 22 objects are variable at the3sigma level in our data. All these objects are pre-main sequence stars, consisting of both T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be objects while the mainsequence, Vega type and post-T Tauri type objects are not variable. Thepolarization properties of the variable sources are mostly indicative ofthe UXOR-type behaviour; the objects show highest polarization when thebrightness is at minimum. We add seven new objects to the class of UXORvariables (BH Cep, VX Cas, DK Tau, HK Ori, LkHα 234, KK Oph and RYOri). The main reason for their discovery is the fact that our data-setis the largest in its kind, indicating that many more young UXOR-typepre-main sequence stars remain to be discovered. The set of Vega-likesystems has been investigated for the presence of intrinsicpolarization. As they lack variability, this was done using indirectmethods, and apart from the known case of BD+31o643, thefollowing stars were found to be strong candidates to exhibitpolarization due to the presence of circumstellar disks: 51 Oph,BD+31o643C, HD 58647 and HD 233517. EXPORT: Spectral classification and projected rotational velocities of Vega-type and pre-main sequence stars
In this paper we present the first comprehensive results extracted fromthe spectroscopic campaigns carried out by the EXPORT (EXoPlanetaryObservational Research Team) consortium. During 1998-1999, EXPORTcarried out an intensive observational effort in the framework of theorigin and evolution of protoplanetary systems in order to obtain clueson the evolutionary path from the early stages of the pre-main sequenceto stars with planets already formed. The spectral types of 70 stars, and the projected rotational velocities, v sin i, of 45 stars, mainlyVega-type and pre-main sequence, have been determined from intermediate-and high-resolution spectroscopy, respectively. The first part of thework is of fundamental importance in order to accurately place the starsin the HR diagram and determine the evolutionary sequences; the secondpart provides information on the kinematics and dynamics of the starsand the evolution of their angular momentum. The advantage of using thesame observational configuration and methodology for all the stars isthe homogeneity of the set of parameters obtained. Results from previouswork are revised, leading in some cases to completely new determinationsof spectral types and projected rotational velocities; for some stars noprevious studies were available. Tables 1 and 2 are only, and Table 6also, available in electronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp tocdsarc.u-strasbg.fr(130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/378/116 Based onobservations made with the Isaac Newton and the William Herscheltelescopes operated on the island of La Palma by the Isaac Newton Groupin the Spanish Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos of the Institutode Astrofísica de Canarias.

Research Note Hipparcos photometry: The least variable stars
The data known as the Hipparcos Photometry obtained with the Hipparcossatellite have been investigated to find those stars which are leastvariable. Such stars are excellent candidates to serve as standards forphotometric systems. Their spectral types suggest in which parts of theHR diagrams stars are most constant. In some cases these values stronglyindicate that previous ground based studies claiming photometricvariability are incorrect or that the level of stellar activity haschanged. ICCD Speckle Observations of Binary Stars. XXIII. Measurements during 1982-1997 from Six Telescopes, with 14 New Orbits
We present 2017 observations of 1286 binary stars, observed by means ofspeckle interferometry using six telescopes over a 15 year period from1982 April to 1997 June. These measurements constitute the 23dinstallment in CHARA's speckle program at 2 to 4 m class telescopes andinclude the second major collection of measurements from the MountWilson 100 inch (2.5 m) Hooker Telescope. Orbital elements are alsopresented for 14 systems, seven of which have had no previouslypublished orbital analyses.

A-shell stars in the Geneva system
Among the various kinds of A stars having a peculiar spectrum, we findthe A-shell stars. Many questions are still open concerning these stars, including their evolutionary status. In the present study we have useddata from the Hipparcos catalogue to examine this point. We have foundthat the majority of A-shell stars are well above the main sequence. Nodifferences could be established between A-shell stars in luminosityclasses III and I and those in luminosity class V as regardsvariability, duplicity, or the importance of the shell feature.

Radial velocities of HIPPARCOS southern B8-F2 type stars
Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of B8-F2 type starsobserved by the Hipparcos satellite. Observations were obtained withinthe framework of an ESO key-program. Radial velocities have beenmeasured using a cross-correlation method, the templates being a grid ofsynthetic spectra. The obtained precision depends on effectivetemperature and projected rotational velocity of the star as well as ona possible asymmetry of the correlation peak generally due to secondarycomponents. New spectroscopic binaries have been detected from theseasymmetries and the variability of the measured radial velocity.Simulations of binary and triple systems have been performed. Forbinaries our results have been compared with Hipparcos binary data.Adding the variable radial velocities, the minimum binary fraction hasbeen found 60% for physical systems. Radial velocities have beendetermined for 581 B8-F2 stars, 159 being new. Taking into accountpublished radial velocities, 39% south A-type stars with V magnitudelower than 7.5 have a radial velocity. AE and A type shell stars
We present and discuss the observations of 14 Ae and A type shell starsin the visual, the Hα region and the near infrared. At least 57%of these stars are spectrum variables. The Paschen lines are formed in aregion which has the characterics of giant stars. We find that thesystems lie one magnitude above the main sequence and that a largepercentage belong to double and triple systems.

The beta Pictoris Phenomenon in A-Shell Stars: Detection of Accreting Gas
We present the results of an expanded survey of A-shell stars using IUEhigh-dispersion spectra and find accreting, circumstellar gas in theline of sight to nine stars, in addition to the previously identifiedbeta Pic, HR 10, and 131 Tau, which can be followed to between +70 and100 km s-1 relative to the star. Two of the program stars, HD 88195 andHD 148283, show variable high-velocity gas. Given the small number ofIUE spectra for our program stars, detection of high-velocity, accretinggas in 2/3 of the A-shell stars sampled indicates that accretion is anintrinsic part of the A-shell phenomenon and that beta Pic is not uniqueamong main-sequence A stars in exhibiting such activity. Our programstars, as a group, have smaller column densities of high-velocity gasand smaller near-IR excesses compared with beta Pic. These features areconsistent with greater central clearing of a remnant debris disk, compared with beta Pic, and suggest that the majority of field A-shellstars are older than beta Pic.

Detection of Accreting, Circumstellar Gas in a lambda Bootis Star: 131 Tauri
We present IUE high-dispersion spectra of the lambda Boo star, 131 Tau(HD 38545), confirming the presence of shell spectral features and alsoproviding the first detection of accreting, circumstellar gas in thespectrum of a lambda Boo star. Accreting gas can be followed in themid-UV Fe II transitions to +80 km s-1 relative to the star.Circumstellar material can be followed to +60 km s-1 relative to thestar in Zn II and is detected, albeit with low S/N, in Si II, Al II, andC I. The IUE data for 131 Tau were compared with archival spectra ofother lambda Boo stars with optical detections of narrow absorptionfeatures, which have previously been interpreted as signatures ofcircumstellar gas. We find that the circumstellar absorption in 131 Taumore closely resembles similar features that are routinely observed inbeta Pic and recently detected in other field A-shell stars.

Polarisation in A-type stars with circumstellar shells.
We present the results of optical linear polarisation measurements ofabout 30 A-type stars that are known to be either Ae/A shell stars orhave shown anomalous emission in the infrared. Compared with the generalpopulation of A-type stars, stars of this group are found to havepolarisation that is also anomalous and is suggested to be circumstellarin origin.

A catalog of far-ultraviolet point sources detected with the fast FAUST Telescope on ATLAS-1
We list the photometric measurements of point sources made by the FarUltraviolet Space Telescope (FAUST) when it flew on the ATLAS-1 spaceshuttle mission. The list contains 4698 Galactic and extragalacticobjects detected in 22 wide-field images of the sky. At the locationssurveyed, this catalog reaches a limiting magnitude approximately afactor of 10 fainter than the previous UV all-sky survey, TDl. Thecatalog limit is approximately 1 x 10-14 ergs A sq cm/s,although it is not complete to this level. We list for each object theposition, FUV flux, the error in flux, and where possible anidentification from catalogs of nearby stars and galaxies. Thesecatalogs include the Michigan HD (MHD) and HD, SAO, the HIPPARCOS InputCatalog, the Position and Proper Motion Catalog, the TD1 Catalog, theMcCook and Sion Catalog of white dwarfs, and the RC3 Catalog ofGalaxies. We identify 2239 FAUST sources with objects in the stellarcatalogs and 172 with galaxies in the RC3 catalog. We estimate thenumber of sources with incorrect identifications to be less than 2%.

Radial velocity studies of A-type shell stars.
We have measured radial velocities for a sample of A-type shell stars. We examine the results for the H I, Ti II and Ca II shell lines andcompared them with the radial velocities derived for the underlyingstars. We found that the A-type shell stars reproduce on a smaller scalethe phenomena observed in B-type shell stars.

The beta Pictoris Phenomenon in A-Shell Stars
We present the results of an on-going survey of IUE recent and archivalspectra of A-shell stars for accreting, circumstellar gas similar tothat seen toward beta Pic. Compared to previous, optical surveys, theUV, and particularly the mid-UV is rich in high-oscillator strengthtransitions of cosmically abundant elements, providing more sensitiveprobes of circumstellar material than can be obtained in opticalsurveys. Accreting material is detected in HD 88195, HD 38090, HD 15253,HD 38090, and HD 42111 in addition to the previously reported detectionsfor HR 10, 51 Oph, and beta Pic. Given the limited number of IUEobservations, together with the high detection rate, the available dataimply that accreting circumstellar gas is routinely in the line of sightto these stars, in contrast to the classical Be stars for whichaccretion events are comparatively rare. The optically brighter stars inour sample are IRAS sources; given the faint V magnitudes we havedetected either the presence of companions or circumstellar dust.Several of the program stars have residual Hα emission in publishedspectra. Previous studies have suggested that A-shell stars represent anextension to lower stellar luminosities of the classical Be phenomenon,in which case we would expect only sporadic detections of accretingmaterial. Nevertheless, the overall level of the accreting gas, thepresence of incipient Hα emission, and the presence of modest IRexcesses, compared to Herbig Ae stars, suggests a closer link to theHerbig Ae stars and objects like beta Pic. This study was supportedunder NASA Contract NASW-4756 to the Applied Research Corporation.

ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. X - A further survey for duplicity among the bright stars
Speckle interferometric observations are reported for 1123 starsselected from the Yale Bright Star Catalogue (BSC) in a continuingeffort to detect new binaries among the bright stars. Thirty-twopreviously unresolved binaries have been detected, including companionsto Xi UMa and 15 S Mon. Measures of 107 previously resolved systems, many of which resulted from earlier speckle observations, are alsopresented. No evidence of duplicity within a specific (m, Delta-m, rho)window of detectability was found for 984 bright stars. Many of thesystems discovered earlier have shown significant orbital motions, andwe present preliminary orbital elements for six binaries. This efforthas resulted in the discovery of 75 new, bright binaries. We considersome aspects of the duplicity frequencies among the diverse spectral andluminosity classes represented in this sample. We anticipate that thecompletion of a speckle survey of the BSC would lead to the discovery ofat least 200 additional binary systems with angular separations mostlybelow 0.20 arcsec. Many of these will have periods of the order of onedecade and will be accessible to complementary radial velocity programsof enhanced precision.

Lyman alpha emission in spectra of Herbig AE stars - an indication of accretion?
Lyman-alpha emission lines have been detected in the IUE spectra ofseveral Herbig Ae stars, but not in those of Herbig Be stars. The shapesand positions of these lines are not consistent with those expected froma chromosphere and transition region (TR), which may be the origin ofthe other FUV emission lines in the spectra of these stars. The closesimilarity with the Ly-alpha profile of 17 Lep, a low mass binary systemin its first mass transfer phase, that of AE Aqr, a cataclysmicvariable, and those of T Tauri stars suggests that the Ly-alpha emissionof the Herbig Ae stars is formed by recombination of infalling matter. The accretion rates derived from the Ly-alpha fluxes of 17 Lep, AE Aqr,and T Tauri stars are in good agreement with those obtained from otherobservations of these stars. The derived accretion rates of the HerbigAe stars are similar to those obtained for T Tauri stars but 3 orders ofmagnitude lower than those of FU Ori and Z CMa. We have used the profileshapes to constrain the geometry of the infall. The correspondingaccretion energies are amply sufficient to balance the radiative lossesby the other UV emission lines and to drive the outflow from the youngstars.

Anomalous infrared emitters among A-type stars
Spectroscopic observations of a sample of 26 stars have been analyzed inthe blue and near-IR to find out if anomalous IR emitters (AIEs) have aspectral signature. It is found that many, but not all, such starsexhibit shell characteristics. Analysis of available IRAS photometricobservations of A-type stars shows that the detection of circumstellarfeatures depends strongly on the number of IR bands at which the objectwas observed. Out of the 707 stars observed by IRAS, 41 AIEs, or 5.7percent, are found. Among nonsupergiant AIEs, 23 percent show shellfeatures. The true percentage of AIEs among A-type stars is estimated tobe 1.5 percent in a volume-corrected sample. A list of 24 stars whichwere apparently not previously detected as AIEs is given.

AE and A-type shell stars in the near infrared
Spectroscopic observations in the near-infrared of a number of Ae and Ashell stars are presented. It is shown that shells can be detectedthrough the enhancement of the lambda 7773 line and through otherspectroscopic criteria.

Search for Beta Pictoris-like star
The results are reported of a systematic search for Beta Pic-like stars, undertaken at ESO, CFHT and OHP. The candidate stars, either IRAS excessstars or shell stars, are investigated by means of high resolutionspectroscopy in the Ca II and Na I lines, which in the case of Beta Pic,are very peculiar. The observations are presented and it is shown thatamong the selected stars, few do show spectral similarities with BetaPic. Some interesting cases, HR10, HR2174, HR9043 and HR6519 arediscussed.

A survey of AE and A-type shell stars in the photographic region
A total of 28 northern Ae and A-type shell stars were observed in thephotographic spectral region. A regular pattern of line behavior withspectral type was found, which in part prolongs the behavior of Be starstoward cooler stars, although a discontinuity seems present around A0. Asurvey of other data concerning colors, rotation, variability, etc., isalso presented. Photometrically the stars simulate the behavior ofhigher-luminosity objects. A large proportion of shells seems to bevariable. The attempt to detect new shell stars among 13 stars known tobe rapid rotators with normal spectra failed, however.

H-alpha and near-infrared spectra of late-type Be and A F-type shell stars
Profiles of H-alpha and the near-infrared lines of O I and Ca II in thespectra of a number of bright Be stars of later type, and A - F shellstars were obtained with a CCD detector at the Kitt Peak coude feedtelescope in November 1984. The lines studied show sharp absorptioncores in the shell stars, as expected, and there appears to be a smoothtransition from the late-type Be stars to the A-type shell stars. However, the H-alpha line changes from emission to absorption ratherabruptly from the late Be stars to the early A-type shell stars.

The H-alpha line in AE and A shell stars
The H-alpha profiles of a sample of 20 Ae and A shell stars areanalyzed. In the earlier types, emission features are present; in themiddle A-types only absorption cores are seen; and in the late A-typesthe H-alpha profiles are normal both in the profiles and the equivalentwidths. In this latter group the shell features visible in the360-480-nm region are unrelated to H-alpha. Because of the short timeinterval covered, some few cases of variability are found.
