The total-to-selective extinction ratio determined from near IR photometry of OB stars
The paper presents an extensive list of the total to selectiveextinction ratios R calculated from the infrared magnitudes of 597 O andB stars using the extrapolation method. The IR magnitudes of these starswere taken from the literature. The IR colour excesses are determinedwith the aid of "artificial standards" - Wegner (1994). The individualand mean values of total to selective extinction ratios R differ in mostcases from the average value R=3.10 +/-0.05 - Wegner (1993) in differentOB associations. The relation between total to selective extinctionratios R determined in this paper and those calculated using the "methodof variable extinction" and the Cardelli et al. (1989) formulae isdiscussed. The R values presented in this paper can be used to determineindividual absolute magnitudes of reddened OB stars with knowntrigonometric parallaxes.

Absolute proper motions of open clusters. I. Observational data
Mean proper motions and parallaxes of 205 open clusters were determinedfrom their member stars found in the Hipparcos Catalogue. 360 clusterswere searched for possible members, excluding nearby clusters withdistances D < 200 pc. Members were selected using ground basedinformation (photometry, radial velocity, proper motion, distance fromthe cluster centre) and information provided by Hipparcos (propermotion, parallax). Altogether 630 certain and 100 possible members werefound. A comparison of the Hipparcos parallaxes with photometricdistances of open clusters shows good agreement. The Hipparcos dataconfirm or reject the membership of several Cepheids in the studiedclusters. Multicolor Polarization Study of ARA OB1
We present the results of a multicolor polarimetric study of stars inthe association Ara OB1. Several objects belonging to the clusters NGC6204, 6193, and 6167 and the local field were observed as part of aglobal study of the region. The polarimetry shows that the orientationof the polarimetric vectors of each star is very similar within eachcluster. The average values are 35.5d+/-15.1d and 52.2d+/-16 deg for NGC6204 and 6193, respectively. An average value of 106.5d+/-9.9d is foundfor NGC 6167, but the angle distribution is asymmetric, and a secondcomponent can be fitted to the angle histogram (P.A.~120.8d+/-11.6d),showing a behavior not observed in NGC 6204 and 6193. So, we suggestthat some of the observed stars perhaps belong to another starsgrouping, located behind NGC 6167 and between a dust layer with adifferent orientation of the grains. The large difference in thepolarization angle between NGC 6167 and the other two clusters couldalso be explained because NGC 6167 is supposed to be at the center of agas-expanding structure and it is possible that this cluster was theorigin of the star formation process in the Ara OB1 association,triggered by stellar winds or supernova explosions.

Five-colour photometry of OB-stars in the Southern Hemisphere
Observations of OB-stars, made in 1959 and 1960 at the Leiden SouthernStation near Hartebeespoortdam, South Africa, with the VBLUW photometerattached to the 90 cm light-collector, are given in this paper. They arecompared with photometry obtained by \cite[Graham (1968),]{gra68}\cite[Walraven & Walraven (1977),]{wal77} \cite[Lub & Pel(1977)]{lub77} and \cite[Van Genderen et al. UBV beta Database for Case-Hamburg Northern and Southern Luminous Stars
A database of photoelectric UBV beta photometry for stars listed in theCase-Hamburg northern and southern Milky Way luminous stars surveys hasbeen compiled from the original research literature. Consisting of over16,000 observations of some 7300 stars from over 500 sources, thisdatabase constitutes the most complete compilation of such photometryavailable for intrinsically luminous stars around the Galactic plane.Over 5000 stars listed in the Case-Hamburg surveys still lackfundamental photometric data.

The orbit of the supergiant component of VELA X-1 derived from IUE radial velocities
47 short-wavelength, high-resolution IUE spectra have been used toderive the orbital elements of HD 77581, the supergiant companion to theneutron star in the X-ray source Vela X-1; the velocity amplitude is atthe lower end of the range found by previous workers using primarilyoptical spectra, but other elements (e, omega) are in fair agreementwith those derived from pulse timing studies of the X-ray source. Thenew results indicate that the mass of the neutron star is close to 1.4M_solar and is not significantly larger than those measured for othermembers of this class of object.

A Radial Velocity Database for Stephenson-Sanduleak Southern Luminous Stars

Deep Hα survey of the Milky Way. III. The l=338deg area.
The Galactic plane has been observed between l=337deg and l=342deg inthe frame of an Hα Survey of the Southern Milky Way. This area isknown to be rich in radio sources but poor in Hα emission. Theanalysis of high resolution profiles of the Hα emission observedin this direction nevertheless enabled to distinguish 6 differentvelocity components: 2 faint layers of diffuse ionized hydrogen at 0 and-12km/s (V_LSR_), 2 brighter layers at -28 and -39km/s includingindividual HII regions, a faint patch at -50km/s and two isolated brightHII regions at -61km/s. Combining these Hα observations withstellar and radio data we conclude about the most probable distances forthe different components.

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

A spectroscopic database for Stephenson-Sanduleak Southern Luminous Stars
A database of published spectral classifications for objects in theStepenson-Sanduleak Luminous Stars in the Southern Milky Way catalog hasbeen compiled from the literature. A total of 6182 classifications for2562 stars from 139 sources are incorporated.

Catalogue of blue stragglers in open clusters.
An extensive survey of blue straggler candidates in galactic openclusters of both hemispheres is presented. The blue stragglers wereselected considering their positions in the cluster colour-magnitudediagrams.They were categorized according to the accuracy of thephotometric measurements and membership probabilities. An amount of 959blue straggler candidates in 390 open clusters of all ages wereidentified and classified. A set of basic data is given for everycluster and blue straggler. The information is arranged in the form of acatalogue. Blue stragglers are found in clusters of all ages. Thepercentage of clusters with blue stragglers generally grows with age andrichness of the clusters. The mean ratio of the number of bluestragglers to the number of cluster main sequence stars is approximatelyconstant up to a cluster age of about 10^8.6^ yr and rises for olderclusters. In general, the blue stragglers show a remarkable degree ofcentral concentration.

Classical H II regions in the Magellanic Clouds. 2: Stellar content
In this second in a series of papers on the nature of classical H IIregions in the Magellanic Clouds I investigate the properties of theunderlying stellar content of the nebulae. Particular emphasis is placedon identifying and classifying the ionizing source(s) for each H IIregion. With the exception of the LMC H II regions DEM 20 and DEM 8c, Ifind that all of the objects in this sample are ionized by more than oneO or B star. Even the faintest H II regions reflect the formation of ahandful of massive, albeit early B type, stars. Typically, one staraccounts for 60% - 70% of the ionizing photons and 2 - 5 less massivestars provide the remaining 30% - 40%. From the statistics of thehottest stars in these H II regions, and from considering all the bluestars contained within each region, the distribution of massive starswith spectral type is consistent with results found in similar galacticH II regions.

An IUE survey of interstellar H I LY alpha absorption. 1: Column densities
We measure Galactic interstellar neutral hydrogen column densities byanalyzing archival interstellar Ly alpha absorption line data toward 554B2 and hotter stars observed at high resolution with the IUE satellite.This study more than doubles the number of lines of sight with measuresof N(H I) based on Ly alpha. We have included the scattered lightbackground correction algorithm of Bianchi and Bohlin in our datareduction. We use the correlation between the Balmer discontinuity(c1) index and the stellar Ly alpha absorption in order toassess the effects of stellar Ly alpha contamination. Approximately 40%of the B stars with measured (c1) index, exhibit seriousstellar Ly alpha contamination. One table contains the derived values ofthe interstellar N(H I) for 393 stars with at most small amounts ofstellar contamination. Another lists the observed values of total N(H I)for 161 stars with suspected stellar Ly alpha contamination and/oruncertain stellar parameters.

Stromgren and H beta photometry of OB associations and open clusters. I - ARA OB1
Stromgren and H beta photometry of 38 stars in the field of Ara OB1 ispresented. The excesses, the absolute magnitudes and the temperatures ofthe stars have been obtained. The masses and the ages are alsoestimated, based on the models of Maeder and Meynet. Two differentgroups have been distinguished by their space locations at V0 - MV =10.23 and 12.01 mag (assuming a normal extinction law). The more distantgroup is younger and more massive. The magnitude and the excess of theWR star MR62 point to its probable membership of this group. There aregood reasons to suspect a value of the total-to-selective absorptionratio that is greater than the normal 3.2, which leads to a significantreduction of the true distance moduli.

Binary stars - Another effect contributing to the supposed abnormal extinction law in NGC 6193?
This paper reports UBVRI photoelectric photometry of stars lying in thefield of the open cluster NGC 6193. Attention is focused onto earlieranalysis, which had suggested that in this region both the E(U-B)/E(B-V)excess relation and the extinction law are not standard. But the newdata support that both E(U-B)/E(B-V) and the extinction law have valueswhich may be assumed to be the standard ones. It was found that thenear-infrared anomalies are related in some cases to binary stars.Single stars also showing near-infrared excess could be explained interms of circumstellar shell hypothesis. A similar feature is foundamong stars in the open cluster Tr 16. The cluster age is not greaterthan 3.1 x 10 exp 6 yr from isochrones computed for models with massloss and overshooting. The distance obtained is 1410 pc.

Groups of stars with common motion in the Galaxy - Groups of B stars of luminosity classes I and II and their comparison with groups of long-period Cepheids and open clusters
In a sample of 93 stars of luminosity classes I and II, ten groups withcommon motion in space are isolated. The reality of five groups isestablished by numerical experiment. A comparison is made with groups oflong-period Cepheids and open clusters. Regularities in the distributionof groups of different objects in space are found. The reality of therotation of a star aggregate consisting of three Cepheid groups isestablished.

The open cluster NGC 6193 - Another cluster rich in spectroscopic binaries
From spectrographic observations of probable members of NGC 6193, radialvelocities, projected axial rotational velocities, and approximatespectral types are obtained. The average axial rotation with respect tothe field stars for the members of NGC 6193 is shown to be 0.67 + or -0.08 and the average heliocentric radial velocity for the cluster isfound to be -33.1 km/sec. Six new spectroscopic binaries and an He-richstar were discovered. The high incidence of spectroscopic binaries amongthe main-sequence members of NGC 6193 is compared with clusters ofsimilar average axial rotation.

The case for diffuse, collisionally ionized interstellar C IV and SI IV below Z = 1 KPC
Highly ionized gas in the galactic disk and disc/halo interface regionwas studied using IUE observations of C IV and Si IV absorption in 19codirectional sight-lines to early-type stars. Evidence for a generallydistributed, collisionally ionized phase of this gas having a density inthe plane of 3 times 10 to the minus 9th power/cc and a scale height inthe range of 1 to 3 kpc is presented. It is shown that the use of arestricted range of sight-line directions in studies such as this mayreduce confusion resulting from inhomogeneities in the distribution ofthe highly ionized medium.

On the intrinsic UVBY colours of early-type supergiants
The present photoelectric uvby observations of 43 late O-type to earlyA-type supergiants are combined with published results to extend theZhang (1983) determination of the intrinsic color lines in the(b-y)/c(1) diagram. Zhang's conclusion that the H-beta index is wellcorrelated with luminosity class is reaffirmed by the results obtained,although the degree of separation found here is less clear. It is notfound, however, that beta has a significant minimum between the B1 andB3 spectral types.

Radial velocities for the hydrogen-deficient star HD 168476, several helium-strong and helium-weak stars
Radial-velocity measurements are reported for one hydrogen-deficientstar (the extreme helium-rich star HD 168476), three helium-strong stars(HD 93030, HD 96446, and HD 133518), and two helium-weak stars (HD 5737and HD 202671). Statistical tests are made to see if the stars arevariable. HD 168476 is found to be variable in a complex manner; thevariability of HD 93030 is confirmed but the period is revised to1.88016 + or - 0.0008 days; and variability is suspected for HD 96248and HD 5737. One of the stars used as a radial-velocity standard, HD113537, is also suspected of variability.

Early-type stars in OB associations in the infrared. II - A discussion of density and temperature distributions in stellar winds
Numerical computations of the infrared flux distribution in early-typestars with mass loss are presented. After assuming that infraredradiation is due both to the stellar photosphere and to free-free andfree-bound transitions in the ionized stellar wind, the influence ofmass-loss rate and wind velocity-law on the infrared flux is studied. Asignificant infrared excess over the photospheric flux will only beobserved when the mass-loss rate is larger than about 10 to the -6thsolar masses/yr, and/or when the velocity gradient is moderate. Bymatching computed and observed flux distributions, the velocity law of asample of OB stars with spectral types ranging from O4 to B2 isinvestigated. While the velocity law derived from the infrared flux of Ostars is consistent with that expected from a radiatively-driven wind,early B stars show, on the average, a smoother velocity gradient.

Interstellar NaI absorption towards the stellar association ARA OB1
Observations have been made of the interstellar D-line absorption of NaI towards a loose grouping of OB stars (containing the association AraOB1 and probably the H-alpha emission regions RCW 107 and 108) centeredat 1 = 337.5 deg and b = - 0.5 deg. The individual absorption spectracontain several velocity components which show well-defined groupings at- 37, -18 and 0 km/s. The corresponding median optical depths are 2, 7and 6. The evidence indicates that both the -37 and -18 km/s Na I cloudsare located in the Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm. Several H II regionsare located at similar longitudes, but most are close to zero latitudeand are more distant than the arm. The association contains the galacticcluster NGC 61993. The results suggest that the turbulence seenoptically towards this cluster has been caused by the interactionbetween two cloud groups moving towards each other at velocities of 10to 15 km/s.

Early-type stars in OB associations in the infrared. I Extinction law and IR excesses
Observations have been made of 82 early-type stars of OB associations inthe infrared (JHKLM). The law of interstellar extinction isinvestigated. The empirical reddening curve (with R = 3.13) is found tobe in close agreement with van de Hulst's (1949) theoretical curve No.15. This law is generally valid for the OB associations considered. Themeasured infrared magnitudes were dereddened with this extinction law,and compared with the prediction of model atmospheres. Significantinfrared excesses due to circumstellar free-free radiation are found fora large number of stars. The strongest IR excess (about 0.5 mag in M) isfound for the Of-type stars HD 108, HD 151804, and HD 152408. In late Bsupergiants no significant excess radiation is detectable. However, thevery luminous hypergiants HD 168607 and HD 168625 do show excessradiation of about 0.2 mag in M.

A study of B-type supergiants with the uvby,beta photometric system
The applicability of the uvby,beta photometric system to theclassification and study of B-type supergiants (BTS) is investigatedusing published data on 157 BTS and observations of 17 BTS made with the36-in. reflector at McDonald Observatory. The results are presented intabular form and analyzed to produce preliminary calibrations ofluminosity class vs. beta index and of absolute magnitude (Mv) vs. beta(or delta Mv vs. delta beta) for four associations of stars. Theeffectiveness of various color indices as temperature indicators isdiscussed. It is shown that there is good correspondence between MK anduvby,beta classifications of B-type main-sequence stars, giants, andBTS, confirming the usefulness of the uvby,beta system in furtherresearch on BTS.

New UBVRI photometry for 900 supergiants
A description is presented of the results obtained in connection with asystematic program of supergiant photometry on the Johnson UBVRI system.During the eight years after the start of the program, almost 1000 starshave been observed, about 400 three or more times each. The originalselection of stars used the spectral type catalog of Jaschek et al.(1964) to choose supergiants. Since observations were possible from bothChile and Canada, no declination limits were imposed, and no particularselection criteria were imposed other than to eliminate carbon stars.These are so red as to require enormous extrapolations of thetransformation equations.

UBV photometry for southern OB stars
New UBV photometry of 1227 OB stars in the southern Milky Way ispresented. For 1113 of these stars, MK spectral types have been reportedpreviously in a comprehensive survey to B = 10.0 mag.
