Medium-resolution Isaac Newton Telescope library of empirical spectra - II. The stellar atmospheric parameters We present a homogeneous set of stellar atmospheric parameters(Teff, logg, [Fe/H]) for MILES, a new spectral stellarlibrary covering the range λλ 3525-7500Å at2.3Å (FWHM) spectral resolution. The library consists of 985 starsspanning a large range in atmospheric parameters, from super-metal-rich,cool stars to hot, metal-poor stars. The spectral resolution, spectraltype coverage and number of stars represent a substantial improvementover previous libraries used in population synthesis models. Theatmospheric parameters that we present here are the result of aprevious, extensive compilation from the literature. In order toconstruct a homogeneous data set of atmospheric parameters we have takenthe sample of stars of Soubiran, Katz & Cayrel, which has very welldetermined fundamental parameters, as the standard reference system forour field stars, and have calibrated and bootstrapped the data fromother papers against it. The atmospheric parameters for our clusterstars have also been revised and updated according to recent metallicityscales, colour-temperature relations and improved set of isochrones.
| Medium-resolution Isaac Newton Telescope library of empirical spectra A new stellar library developed for stellar population synthesismodelling is presented. The library consists of 985 stars spanning alarge range in atmospheric parameters. The spectra were obtained at the2.5-m Isaac Newton Telescope and cover the range λλ3525-7500 Å at 2.3 Å (full width at half-maximum) spectralresolution. The spectral resolution, spectral-type coverage,flux-calibration accuracy and number of stars represent a substantialimprovement over previous libraries used in population-synthesis models.

| Kinematics and Luminosity Function of Dwarf Populations in Three Areas of the Calán-ESO Proper-Motion Catalog We have completed the analysis of a sample of 112 stars in the solarneighborhood taken from the statistically complete Calán-ESOcatalog. From medium-resolution spectroscopy we classified every star,both by direct comparison with spectroscopic standards and by usingspectral indices. The latter also allowed discrimination betweenmain-sequence (MS) dwarfs and subdwarfs. Several useful spectral typeversus color relations were obtained from CCD photometry of the sample(observed magnitudes were dereddened). Distances and absolute magnitudeswere determined. From measured radial velocities and proper motions, wedetermined the kinematics [Galactocentric velocity components (U,V,W)],which allowed the classification of each star as belonging to the diskor halo population. Luminosity functions (LFs) were then obtained usingthe 1/Vmax method for the different populations. The maximumin the LF for MS dwarfs was found to be near MV=12.5+/-0.5,in accord with previous determinations. On the other hand, we found anincrease in the LF of the subdwarf at its faint end, which is in strongdisagreement with determinations by other authors. A mass density of MSdwarfs of ~0.047+/-0.021 Msolar pc-3 was derived,while the contribution of subdwarfs was found to be negligible.Based on observations obtained with the VLT (ESO), project 67.D-0224A.
| Statistical cataloging of archival data for luminosity class IV-V stars. II. The epoch 2001 [Fe/H] catalog This paper describes the derivation of an updated statistical catalog ofmetallicities. The stars for which those metallicities apply are ofspectral types F, G, and K, and are on or near the main sequence. Theinput data for the catalog are values of [Fe/H] published before 2002February and derived from lines of weak and moderate strength. Theanalyses used to derive the data have been based on one-dimensional LTEmodel atmospheres. Initial adjustments which are applied to the datainclude corrections to a uniform temperature scale which is given in acompanion paper (see Taylor \cite{t02}). After correction, the data aresubjected to a statistical analysis. For each of 941 stars considered,the results of that analysis include a mean value of [Fe/H], an rmserror, an associated number of degrees of freedom, and one or moreidentification numbers for source papers. The catalog of these resultssupersedes an earlier version given by Taylor (\cite{t94b}).Catalog is only available in electronic form at the CDS via anonymousftp cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/398/731
| Statistical cataloging of archival data for luminosity class IV-V stars. I. The epoch 2001 temperature catalog This paper is one of a pair in which temperatures and metallicitycatalogs for class IV-V stars are considered. The temperature catalogdescribed here is derived from a calibration based on stellar angulardiameters. If published calibrations of this kind are compared by usingcolor-index transformations, temperature-dependent differences among thecalibrations are commonly found. However, such differences are minimizedif attention is restricted to calibrations based on Johnson V-K. Acalibration of this sort from Di Benedetto (\cite{dib98}) is thereforetested and adopted. That calibration is then applied to spectroscopicand photometric data, with the latter predominating. Cousins R-Iphotometry receives special attention because of its high precision andlow metallicity sensitivity. Testing of temperatures derived from thecalibration suggests that their accuracy and precision are satisfactory,though further testing will be warranted as new results appear. Thesetemperatures appear in the catalog as values of theta equiv5040/T(effective). Most of these entries are accompanied by measured orderived values of Cousins R-I. Entries are given for 951 stars.Catalog is only available in electronic form at the CDS via anonymousftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/398/721
| Improved Astrometry and Photometry for the Luyten Catalog. II. Faint Stars and the Revised Catalog We complete construction of a catalog containing improved astrometry andnew optical/infrared photometry for the vast majority of NLTT starslying in the overlap of regions covered by POSS I and by the secondincremental Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) release, approximately 44%of the sky. The epoch 2000 positions are typically accurate to 130 mas,the proper motions to 5.5 mas yr-1, and the V-J colors to0.25 mag. Relative proper motions of binary components are measured to 3mas yr-1. The false-identification rate is ~1% for11<~V<~18 and substantially less at brighter magnitudes. Theseimprovements permit the construction of a reduced proper-motion diagramthat, for the first time, allows one to classify NLTT stars intomain-sequence (MS) stars, subdwarfs (SDs), and white dwarfs (WDs). We inturn use this diagram to analyze the properties of both our catalog andthe NLTT catalog on which it is based. In sharp contrast to popularbelief, we find that NLTT incompleteness in the plane is almostcompletely concentrated in MS stars, and that SDs and WDs are detectedalmost uniformly over the sky δ>-33deg. Our catalogwill therefore provide a powerful tool to probe these populationsstatistically, as well as to reliably identify individual SDs and WDs.
| Calán-ESO Proper-Motion Catalog The Calán-ESO Proper-Motion Catalog (CE Catalog) contains 542stars with proper motions >=0.2" yr-1, identified in 14ESO areas in the southern hemisphere. Proper motions were measured fromred IIIa-F plates taken 6-16 yr apart. Comparing the CE catalog with theLuyten and the Luyten half-second catalogs, we find that both sufferfrom incompleteness, which is particularly serious (<~40% complete)for mR>~13, where many of the astrophysically interestingobject can be found. Proper motions, coordinates, estimated magnitudes,and finding charts for all objects in the catalog are provided. Based onplates obtained with the Schmidt Camera operated by ESO at La Silla,Chile. | Chemical abundances in cool metal rich disk dwarf stars The present study of spectra of twelve metal-rich cool dwarf stars,carefully selected in order to cover a range of temperatures ( ~ 4400 -6000 K), is a follow up on Feltzing & Gustafsson(1998)\nocite{feltzing} with the aim to understand the apparentover-ionization and anomalous elemental abundances found by them for theK dwarf stars in their sample. Our method of analysis employs syntheticspectra of the full spectrum both to constrain the continuum level andto derive abundances. It is shown that by using this method and imposinga strict excitation equilibrium (possible to do because of the care inselection of observed Fe i lines) we are able to show that metal-rich Kdwarf stars do not show anomalous stellar abundances, as indicated inFeltzing & Gustafsson (1998), and can, with reasonable efforts, beanalyzed in order to increase the number of metal-rich stars with usefulchemical abundances. With abundance analysis by means of spectrumsynthesis and assuming Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) theabundances of Na, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, and Nd have beenderived. Also ionization balance is satisfied for Fe and Cr aftercorrecting the stellar effective temperatures such that both ionizationand excitation equilibrium were satisfied. In addition, spectra fromfive cool dwarf stars of the Feltzing & Gustafsson (1998) samplehave been analyzed with the methods used in this work. They showessentially the same abundance patterns as the new stars in this sample.Based on observations made at ESO, La Silla}
| The Vienna-KPNO search for Doppler-imaging candidate stars. I. A catalog of stellar-activity indicators for 1058 late-type Hipparcos stars We present the results from a spectroscopic Ca ii H&K survey of 1058late-type stars selected from a color-limited subsample of the Hipparcoscatalog. Out of these 1058 stars, 371 stars were found to showsignificant H&K emission, most of them previously unknown; 23% withstrong emission, 36% with moderate emission, and 41% with weak emission.These spectra are used to determine absolute H&K emission-linefluxes, radial velocities, and equivalent widths of theluminosity-sensitive Sr ii line at 4077 Ä. Red-wavelengthspectroscopic and Strömgren y photometric follow-up observations ofthe 371 stars with H&K emission are used to additionally determinethe absolute Hα -core flux, the lithium abundance from the Li i6708 Å equivalent width, the rotational velocity vsin i, theradial velocity, and the light variations and its periodicity. Thelatter is interpreted as the stellar rotation period due to aninhomogeneous surface brightness distribution. 156 stars were found withphotometric periods between 0.29 and 64 days, 11 additional systemsshowed quasi-periodic variations possibly in excess of ~50 days. Further54 stars had variations but no unique period was found, and four starswere essentially constant. Altogether, 170 new variable stars werediscovered. Additionally, we found 17 new SB1 (plus 16 new candidates)and 19 new SB2 systems, as well as one definite and two possible new SB3systems. Finally, we present a list of 21 stars that we think are mostsuitable candidates for a detailed study with the Doppler-imagingtechnique. | Abundances in metal-rich stars. Detailed abundance analysis of 47 G and K dwarf stars with [Me/H] > 0.10 dex We have derived elemental abundances of O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr,Mn, Fe, Co, Ni as well as for a number of s-elements for 47 G and Kdwarf, with [Me/H]>0.1 dex. The selection of stars was based on theirkinematics as well as on their uvby-beta photometry. One sample of starson rather eccentric orbits traces the chemical evolution interior to thesolar orbit and another, on circular orbits, the evolution around thesolar orbit. A few Extreme Population I stars were included in thelatter sample. The stars have -0.1 dex < [Fe/H] < 0.42 dex. Thespectroscopic [Fe/H] correlate well with the [Me/H] derived fromuvby-beta photometry. We find that the elemental abundances of Mg, Al,Si, Ca, Ti, Cr and Ni all follow [Fe/H]. Our data put furtherconstraints on models of galactic chemical evolution, in particular ofCr, Mn and Co which have not previously been studied for dwarf starswith [Me/H] >0.1 dex. The increase in [Na/Fe] and [Al/Fe] as afunction of [Fe/H] found previously by \cite[Edvardsson et al.(1993a)]{Edv93} has been confirmed for [Na/Fe]. This upturning relation,and the scatter around it, are shown not to be due to a mixture ofpopulations with different mean distances to the galactic centre. We donot confirm the same trend for aluminium, which is somewhat surprisingsince both these elements are thought to be produced in the sameenvironments in the pre-supernova stars. Nor have we been able to traceany tendency for relative abundances of O, Si, and Ti relative to Fe tovary with the stellar velocities, i.e. the stars present mean distanceto the galactic centre. These results imply that there is no significantdifference in the chemical evolution of the different stellarpopulations for stars with [Me/H]>0.1 dex. We find that [O/Fe]continue to decline with increasing [Fe/H] and that oxygen and europiumcorrelate well. However [Si/Fe] and [Ca/Fe] seem to stay constant. Areal (``cosmic'') scatter in [Ti/Fe] at given [Fe/H] is suggested aswell as a decreasing abundance of the s-elements relative to iron forthe most metal-rich dwarf stars. We discuss our results in the contextof recent models of galactic chemical evolution. In our sample we haveincluded a few very metal rich stars, sometimes called SMR (super metalrich) stars. We find these stars to be among the most iron-rich in oursample but far from as metal-rich as indicated by their photometricmetallicities. SMR stars on highly eccentric orbits, alleged to tracethe evolution of the chemical evolution in the galactic Bulge, havepreviously been found overabundant in O, Mg and Si. We have includedthree such stars from the study by \cite[Barbuy & Grenon(1990)]{Bar90}. We find them to be less metal rich and the otherelemental abundances remain puzzling. Detailed spectroscopic abundanceanalyses of K dwarf stars are rare. Our study includes 5 K dwarf starsand has revealed what appears to be a striking example ofoverionization. The overionization is especially prominent for Ca, Crand Fe. The origin of this apparent overionization is not clear and wediscuss different explanations in some detail. Based on observations atthe McDonald Observatory.
