Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Dynamical evidence for a central mass concentration in the galaxy M87
An image photon-counting system operating in a fully two-dimensionalmode has been used to determine the radial variation of radial velocity, line strength, and velocity dispersion in the elliptical galaxies M87and NGC 3379. Values of these parameters are derived by an applicationof the Fourier method due to Sargent et al. (1977). Extensive tests ofthe Fourier method are performed, the measurements are compared withmodels, and a model-independent analysis is described along with amodel-independent procedure for obtaining the M/L ratio as a function ofradius. The results show that the two galaxies behave quite similarly intheir outer regions but exhibit quite different properties in theircentral regions and that a dark central mass estimated to be 5 billionsolar masses must be concentrated in M87 in a volume with a radius (inparsecs) of 110 times a distance factor. It is concluded that thepresence of a central supermassive black hole on M87 must be a seriouspossibility.
