We present a total of 208 CCD timings for 103 eclipsing binaries.

A catalogue of eclipsing variables
A new catalogue of 6330 eclipsing variable stars is presented. Thecatalogue was developed from the General Catalogue of Variable Stars(GCVS) and its textual remarks by including recently publishedinformation about classification of 843 systems and making correspondingcorrections of GCVS data. The catalogue1 represents thelargest list of eclipsing binaries classified from observations.

Automatic classification of eclipsing binaries light curves using neural networks
In this work we present a system for the automatic classification of thelight curves of eclipsing binaries. This system is based on aclassification scheme that aims to separate eclipsing binary systemsaccording to their geometrical configuration in a modified version ofthe traditional classification scheme. The classification is performedby a Bayesian ensemble of neural networks trained with Hipparcos data ofseven different categories including eccentric binary systems and twotypes of pulsating light curve morphologies.

Close binary stars in ob-association regions i. preliminary investigation
We performed a sample of O- and B-eclipsing binary stars inOB-association regions and obtained the preliminary list of 147 binariesin 45 OB-association regions. We tried to elucidate the question whether(or not) the close binaries belong to corresponding OB-associations,from the commonness of their proper motions, radial velocities anddistances. Based on the completeness of the data,the binaries aredevided into three groups and the scheme for calculation of degree ofbelonging of stars to OB-associations is developed. Necessary data arenot available for nine systems and they are given in a specific table.For 12 cases, the binaries project onto the regions of two associations.We show that 33 (22.3%) close binary stars are members, 65 (43.9%) areprobable members and 39 (26.4%) are less probable members of theOB-associations. We find that 11 binaries belong to the Galaxybackground. The comparison of the distributions of orbital periods forthe binaries in OB-associations and for O-, B-binaries of the Galaxybackground shows their considerable differences in the vicinity of thetwo-day period.

Catalogue of Algol type binary stars
A catalogue of (411) Algol-type (semi-detached) binary stars ispresented in the form of five separate tables of information. Thecatalogue has developed from an earlier version by including more recentinformation and an improved layout. A sixth table lists (1872) candidateAlgols, about which fewer details are known at present. On the detectability of long period perturbations in close hierarchical triple stellar systems
We study the possibility of the detection of the low amplitude long (P')period perturbative effect of a distant third companion on the motion ofa close binary. We give a new, more accurate analytical formula for thiskind of perturbation affecting the moments of the times of minima ineclipsing binaries. The accuracy of this formula is tested by numericalintegrations carried out for several initial configurations. We alsodescribe a numerical method based on a non-linear Levenberg-Marquardtalgorithm which makes it possible to separate this dynamical effect fromthe pure geometrical light-time effect in the eclipsing O-C diagram. Thecapabilities of this new method are demonstrated by the analysis ofnumerically simulated O-Cs for test systems having physical parametersvery similar to Algol and IU Aur.The results show that the above mentioned effect would be detectable inthese systems nowadays, observing almost each minima events in a 1-2year-long interval.

Envelope Ejection: An Alternative Evolutionary Process for Some Early Case B Binaries
We discuss the evolution of binaries with moderately high masses (~10-30Msolar) and with periods of ~3-300 days, corresponding mostlyto early case B. These are usually thought to evolve either byreasonably conservative Roche lobe overflow, if the initial mass ratiois fairly mild, or else by highly nonconservative common-envelopeevolution, with spiral-in to short periods (hours, typically), if theinitial mass ratio is rather extreme. We discuss here a handful ofbinaries from part of this period range (~50-250 days), which appear tohave followed a different path: we argue that they must have lost alarge proportion of initial mass (~70%-80%) but without shortening theirperiods at all. We suggest that their behavior may be due to the factthat stars of such masses, when evolved also to rather large radii, arenot far from the Humphreys-Davidson limit, where single stars lose theirenvelopes spontaneously in P Cygni winds, and so have envelopes that areonly lightly bound to the core. These envelopes therefore may berelatively easily dissipated by the perturbing effect of a companion. Inaddition, some or all of the stars considered here may have been closeto the Cepheid instability strip when they filled their Roche lobes. Oneor the other, or both, of high luminosity and Cepheid instability, incombination with an appropriately close binary companion, may beimplicated.

A Complete Survey of Case A Binary Evolution with Comparison to Observed Algol-type Systems
We undertake a comparison of observed Algol-type binaries with a libraryof computed Case A binary evolution tracks. The library consists of 5500binary tracks with various values of initial primary massM10, mass ratio q0, and period P0,designed to sample the phase-space of Case A binaries in the range-0.10<=logM10<=1.7. Each binary is evolved using astandard code with the assumption that both total mass and orbitalangular momentum are conserved. This code follows the evolution of bothstars to the point where contact or reverse mass transfer occurs. Theresulting binary tracks show a rich variety of behavior that we sortinto several subclasses of case A and case B. We present the results ofthis classification, the final mass ratio, and the fraction of timespent in Roche Lobe overflow for each binary system. The conservativeassumption under which we created this library is expected to hold for abroad range of binaries, where both components have spectra in the rangeG0 to B1 and luminosity classes III to V. We gather a list of relativelywell-determined, observed hot Algol-type binaries meeting thiscriterion, as well as a list of cooler Algol-type binaries, for which weexpect significant dynamo-driven mass loss and angular momentum loss. Wefit each observed binary to our library of tracks using aχ2-minimizing procedure. We find that the hot Algolsdisplay overall acceptable χ2, confirming theconservative assumption, while the cool Algols show much less acceptableχ2, suggesting the need for more free parameters, such asmass and angular momentum loss.

Survey of Hα Mass Transfer Structures in Classical Algol-Type Binaries
Five years of Hα survey data for 37 ``classical'' Algol-typebinaries are presented. All these systems have primaries with a spectraltype of A or B, have a period of less than 5 days, and are visible inthe Northern Hemisphere. Data were collected with the 1.02 m reflectorat the US Naval Observatory, Flagstaff Station. The survey consists ofover 460 system spectra. Each system was observed at least once duringthe 5 years, with many systems observed several times over severalepochs. Difference profiles are calculated for most spectra by modelingand subtracting the spectrum of the photospheres of the stellarcomponents. We examined each spectrum for the presence of mass transfer,stream-star and stream-disk interaction, a disk or circumstellar bulge,and chromospheric emission. We present information on the prevalence ofmass transfer activity, disk presence, and system states associated withparticular mass transfer structures. We show that no currently publishedstudy, including this one, has enough data for a rigorous statisticalidentification of system states.

Catalogue of Apparent Diameters and Absolute Radii of Stars (CADARS) - Third edition - Comments and statistics
The Catalogue, available at the Centre de Données Stellaires deStrasbourg, consists of 13 573 records concerning the results obtainedfrom different methods for 7778 stars, reported in the literature. Thefollowing data are listed for each star: identifications, apparentmagnitude, spectral type, apparent diameter in arcsec, absolute radiusin solar units, method of determination, reference, remarks. Commentsand statistics obtained from CADARS are given. Stars with the Largest Hipparcos Photometric Amplitudes
A list of the 2027 stars that have the largest photometric amplitudes inHipparcos Photometry shows that most variable stars are all Miras. Thepercentage of variable types change as a function of amplitude. Thiscompilation should also be of value to photometrists looking forrelatively unstudied, but large amplitude stars.

New labour on Algols: conservative or liberal?
I consider three topics related to the influence of magnetic braking,combined with tidal friction, on the orbital evolution of CVs. Firstly,I attempt to show that properties of Algols are roughly consistent withthe view that angular momentum loss (AML) takes place in systems withcool (G/K) components, but not in systems with hot (B/A) components.This is what one might expect if the AML requires an active dynamo asseen in the Sun and other cool stars. The timescale required is roughlyof the order of what might be expected by magnetic braking. Someenhanced mass loss (ML), presumably by stellar wind, also seems to benecessary in the more evolved Algol systems. Secondly, I urge thattheorists adopt a recipe for magnetic braking that is more on the linesof Stȩpień (1995) than of Skumanich (1972). Thirdly, Iargue that `interrupted magnetic braking', a mechanism often invoked toexplain the upper edge of the period gap in CVs, is not in accord withobserved properties of late M dwarfs and brown dwarfs, and that someother mechanism should be sought.

Variations of the orbital periods in semi-detached binary stars with radiative outer layers
A detailed analysis of the period changes of sixteen semi-detachedbinaries which contain only stars with radiative outer layers(ET-systems) has been performed and their respective O-C diagrams arebrought and discussed. It was found that the course of the periodvariations is monotonic and in some systems the period is even constant.This detailed analysis of extensive sets of timings covering severaldecades brings a strong support to an earlier finding of te[Hall(1989)]{hal89} and develops it further. We show that all systems withthe orbital periods shorter than nine days display constant period orits increase, with the exception of an uncertain case of V 337 Aql. Thecourse of the period variations in TT Aur appears more complex but thecyclic term can be plausibly explained by the third body. A search forgeneral relations between the parameters of the systems and the periodchanges was undertaken. The mass ratio q appears to play a role in theperiod variations. Clear changes in systems with orbital periods shorterthan 9 days were detected only for q>0.4 while constant periods arecommon in systems with q<0.4 in this period range. The sense of thesecular changes in most systems is in accordance with the dominantconservative mass transfer in evolved binary and corresponds to the slowphase. The role of the evolutionary scenarios (case A versus B) and theinfluence of changes of the rotational angular momenta of the componentsare discussed.

The Equilibrium Tide Model for Tidal Friction
We derive from first principles the equations governing (a) thequadrupole tensor of a star distorted both by rotation and by thepresence of a companion in a possibly eccentric orbit; (b) a functionalform for the dissipative force of tidal friction, based on the conceptthat the rate of energy loss from a time-dependent tide should be apositive-definite function of the rate of change of the quadrupoletensor as seen in the frame that rotates with the star; and (c) theequations governing the rates of change of the magnitude and thedirection of the stellar rotation, the orbital period and eccentricity,based on the concept of the Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector. Our analysisleads relatively simply to a closed set of equations, valid forarbitrary inclination of the stellar spin to the orbit. The results areequivalent to classical results based on the rather less clear principlethat the tidal bulge lags behind the line of centers by some timedetermined by the rate of dissipation. Our analysis gives the effectivelag time as a function of the dissipation rate and the quadrupolemoment. We discuss briefly some possible applications of theformulation.

MSC - a catalogue of physical multiple stars
The MSC catalogue contains data on 612 physical multiple stars ofmultiplicity 3 to 7 which are hierarchical with few exceptions. Orbitalperiods, angular separations and mass ratios are estimated for eachsub-system. Orbital elements are given when available. The catalogue canbe accessed through CDS (Strasbourg). Half of the systems are within 100pc from the Sun. The comparison of the periods of close and widesub-systems reveals that there is no preferred period ratio and allpossible combinations of periods are found. The distribution of thelogarithms of short periods is bimodal, probably due to observationalselection. In 82\% of triple stars the close sub-system is related tothe primary of a wide pair. However, the analysis of mass ratiodistribution gives some support to the idea that component masses areindependently selected from the Salpeter mass function. Orbits of wideand close sub-systems are not always coplanar, although thecorresponding orbital angular momentum vectors do show a weak tendencyof alignment. Some observational programs based on the MSC aresuggested. The effect of stellar wind on the stability of triple systems
The dynamical evolution of hierarchical triple systems is considered.The effects of mass loss via stellar wind on the stability of triplesystems, with respect to violation of the hierarchical structure andescape of the distant component without exchange, are studied. Planetriple systems with initially circularly orbiting inner and outerbinaries are investigated. The directions of the revolutions of bothbinaries coincide. Triple systems with main-sequence components, andalso those with red giants, are considered. It is shown that in bothcases there is an increase in the stability of the triple systems withrespect to violation of the hierarchical structure. A trend towardsstability loss, with respect to the escape of the distant componentwithout violation of hierarchy, is present only in the case when themass of this component is less than the combined masses of the binarysystem components. The typical times over which the stability measuresvary are comparable with the evolutionary times. The effects of stellarwind on the stability of triple systems with respect to violation of thehierarchy can be estimated analytically, using the representation of thetriple system as a superposition of two binaries. As for stability withrespect to the escape of the distant component which has not undergoneprevious exchange, the analytical results are an overestimate.

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

The effect of eccentricity on three-body orbital stability criteria and its importance for triple star systems
Previous investigations of prograde three-body hierarchical systems witheccentric orbits do not give consistent results. The problem isre-examined for mass configurations particularly important in triplestar systems. It is found that, for systems with binaries moving oncircular orbits, the regions of stability expand slightly in size forlarge mass ratios and contract slightly for small mass ratios as theeccentricity of the outer mass is increased. Comparison of the systemswith their retrograde counterparts indicates that the retrograde are themore stable systems. Increasing the eccentricity of the binary canreduce stability significantly for small outer-body eccentricities andincrease it for large values, but makes little difference forintermediate eccentricities. The analytical c^2 H criterion mirrors thesame general behaviour in the prograde cases, but is not found to be agood quantitative indicator of orbital stability when eccentric orbitsare present, unlike the situation found by Donnison & Mikulskis whenall the orbits are circular. Actual triple star systems with visualbinary components (visual triples) are compared with the criticalcondition for stability for both prograde and retrograde configurations,and are found to be within the stable region regardless of whether theyare prograde or retrograde. It is also found that retrogradeconfigurations tend to be the more stable when the binary eccentricityis small, while for systems with both large binary and outer-bodyeccentricities the prograde configurations are the more stable. Triplesystems with spectroscopic binaries (spectroscopic-visual triples) areshown to lie well within the limits of stability for prograde andretrograde configurations.

OB-type binaries: Models versus observations
Recently published models on close binary evolution for massive stars (Mgreater than 5 solar mass) are compared to a set of detached andsemidetached OB binaries. For the majority of the detached systems, wefind good correspondence between theoretical and observedcharacteristics for stars with masses between 4.5 sola mass and 17 solarmass. We explore the origin of semidetached systems, and discussanomalies between models and observed characteristics. An initial massratio of around 0.6 seems to be preffered for this group. Finally, webriefly examine a number of massive (marginal) contact systems. Thelatter systems all seem to evolve according to case A of mass transfer.

Eclipsing binaries in multiple-star systems
Some 80 eclipsing binaries that are components of multiple-star systemsare considered. Orbits for the third components of these systems aredetermined for only a relatively small number of cases, and all of thesethat have been published to date are presented. Triple-star systems areby far the most common of these, but one system in five is a quadrupleor higher-order system. Eclipsing binaries in compact star clusters suchas SZ Camelopardalis and the two binaries in Trapezium, BM Ori, and V1016 Ori are also considered. The physical and orbital properties of themultiple star systems are discussed in detail in cases where the dataare fairly complete. In triple-star systems with eclipsing binaries theratio of P2/P1 ranges from less than 10 (for Lambda Tauri) to more than10 exp 7 in some cases. The questions of coplanarity of orbits and themembership of components in multiple-star systems are also examined.
