Lucky Imaging survey for southern M dwarf binaries
Context. While M dwarfs are the most abundant stars in the Milky Way,there is still large uncertainty about their basic physical properties(mass, luminosity, radius, etc.) as well as their formation environment.Precise knowledge of multiplicity characteristics and how they change inthis transitional mass region, between Sun-like stars on the one sideand very low mass stars and brown dwarfs on the other, provideconstraints on low mass star and brown dwarf formation. Aims: Inthe largest M dwarf binary survey to date, we search for companions toactive, and thus preferentially young, M dwarfs in the solarneighbourhood. We study their binary/multiple properties, such as themultiplicity frequency and distributions of mass-ratio and separation,and identify short period visual binaries, for which orbital parametersand hence dynamical mass estimates can be derived in the near future. Methods: The observations are carried out in the SDSS i' and z'band using the Lucky Imaging camera AstraLux Sur at the ESO 3.5 m NewTechnology Telescope. Lucky Imaging is a very efficient way of observinga large sample of stars at an angular resolution close to thediffraction limit. Results: In the first part of the survey, weobserved 124 M dwarfs of integrated spectral types M 0-M 6 andidentified 34 new and 17 previously known companions to 44 stars. Wederived relative astrometry and component photometry for these binaryand multiple systems. More than half of the binaries have separationssmaller than 1” and would have been missed in a simplyseeing-limited survey. Correcting our sample for selection effectsyields a multiplicity fraction of 32±6% for 108 M dwarfs within52 pc and with angular separations of 0.1”-6.0”,corresponding to projected separations of 3-180 AU at median distance 30pc. Compared to early-type M dwarfs (M ? 0.3 M&sun;),later-type (and hence lower mass) M dwarf binaries appear to have closerseparations, and more similar masses.Based on observations made with ESO Telescopes at La Silla or ParanalObservatories under programme ID 082.C-0053.Tables 1 and 2 are onlyavailable in electronic form at http://www.aanda.org

XID II: Statistical Cross-Association of ROSAT Bright Source Catalog X-ray Sources with 2MASS Point Source Catalog Near-Infrared Sources
The 18,806 ROSAT All Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog (RASS/BSC) X-raysources are quantitatively cross-associated with near-infrared (NIR)sources from the Two Micron All Sky Survey Point Source Catalog(2MASS/PSC). An association catalog is presented, listing the mostlikely counterpart for each RASS/BSC source, the probability Pid that the NIR source and X-ray source are uniquelyassociated, and the probability P no-id that none of the2MASS/PSC sources are associated with the X-ray source. The catalogincludes 3853 high quality (P id>0.98) X-ray-NIR matches,2280 medium quality (0.98 >= P id>0.9) matches, and4153 low quality (0.9 >= P id>0.5) matches. Of the highquality matches, 1418 are associations that are not listed in the SIMBADdatabase, and for which no high quality match with a USNO-A2 opticalsource was presented for the RASS/BSC source in previous work. Thepresent work offers a significant number of new associations withRASS/BSC objects that will require optical/NIR spectroscopy forclassification. For example, of the 6133 P id>0.92MASS/PSC counterparts presented in the association catalog, 2411 haveno classification listed in the SIMBAD database. These 2MASS/PSC sourceswill likely include scientifically useful examples of known sourceclasses of X-ray emitters (white dwarfs, coronally active stars, activegalactic nuclei), but may also contain previously unknown sourceclasses. It is determined that all coronally active stars in theRASS/BSC should have a counterpart in the 2MASS/PSC, and that the uniqueassociation of these RASS/BSC sources with their NIR counterparts thusis confusion limited.

Proper-motion binaries in the Hipparcos catalogue. Comparison with radial velocity data
Context: .This paper is the last in a series devoted to the analysis ofthe binary content of the Hipparcos Catalogue. Aims: .Thecomparison of the proper motions constructed from positions spanning ashort (Hipparcos) or long time (Tycho-2) makes it possible to uncoverbinaries with periods of the order of or somewhat larger than the shorttime span (in this case, the 3 yr duration of the Hipparcos mission),since the unrecognised orbital motion will then add to the propermotion. Methods: .A list of candidate proper motion binaries isconstructed from a carefully designed χ2 test evaluatingthe statistical significance of the difference between the Tycho-2 andHipparcos proper motions for 103 134 stars in common between the twocatalogues (excluding components of visual systems). Since similar listsof proper-motion binaries have already been constructed, the presentpaper focuses on the evaluation of the detection efficiency ofproper-motion binaries, using different kinds of control data (mostlyradial velocities). The detection rate for entries from the NinthCatalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits (S_B^9) is evaluated, as wellas for stars like barium stars, which are known to be all binaries, andfinally for spectroscopic binaries identified from radial velocity datain the Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs in the solarneighbourhood. Results: .Proper motion binaries are efficientlydetected for systems with parallaxes in excess of ~20 mas, and periodsin the range 1000-30 000 d. The shortest periods in this range(1000-2000 d, i.e., once to twice the duration of the Hipparcos mission)may appear only as DMSA/G binaries (accelerated proper motion in theHipparcos Double and Multiple System Annex). Proper motion binariesdetected among S_B9 systems having periods shorter than about400 d hint at triple systems, the proper-motion binary involving acomponent with a longer orbital period. A list of 19 candidate triplesystems is provided. Binaries suspected of having low-mass(brown-dwarf-like) companions are listed as well. Among the 37 bariumstars with parallaxes larger than 5 mas, only 7 exhibit no evidence forduplicity whatsoever (be it spectroscopic or astrometric). Search for associations containing young stars (SACY). I. Sample and searching method
We report results from a high-resolution optical spectroscopic surveyaimed to search for nearby young associations and young stars amongoptical counterparts of ROSAT All-Sky Survey X-ray sources in theSouthern Hemisphere. We selected 1953 late-type (B-V~≥~0.6),potentially young, optical counterparts out of a total of 9574 1RXSsources for follow-up observations. At least one high-resolutionspectrum was obtained for each of 1511 targets. This paper is the firstin a series presenting the results of the SACY survey. Here we describeour sample and our observations. We describe a convergence method in the(UVW) velocity space to find associations. As an example, we discuss thevalidity of this method in the framework of the β Pic Association.

Identification of New M Dwarfs in the Solar Neighborhood
We present the results from a spectroscopic study of 1080 nearby activeM dwarfs, selected by correlating the Two Micron All Sky Survey andROSAT catalogs. We have derived the spectral types and estimateddistances for all of our stars. The spectral types range between K5 andM6. Nearly half of our stars lie within 50 pc. We have measured theequivalent width of the Hα emission line. Our targets show anincrease in chromospheric activity from early to midspectral types, witha peak in activity around M5. Using the count rate and hardness ratiosobtained from the ROSAT catalog, we have derived the X-ray luminosities.Our stars display a ``saturation-type'' relation between thechromospheric and coronal activity. The relation is such thatlogLX/Lbol remains ``saturated'' at a value ofapproximately -3 for varying Hα equivalent width. We have found568 matches in the USNO-B catalog and have derived the tangentialvelocities for these stars. There is a slight trend of decreasingchromospheric activity with age, such that the stars with highervtan have lower Hα equivalent widths. The coronalemission, however, remains saturated at a value oflogLX/Lbol~-3 for varying tangential velocities,suggesting that the coronal activity remains saturated with age. We donot find any break in the saturation-type relation at the spectral typeat which stars become fully convective (~M3.5). Most of the stars in oursample show more coronal emission than the dMe stars in the Hyades andPraesepe and have vtan<40 km s-1, suggesting ayoung population.

Contributions to the Nearby Stars (NStars) Project: Spectroscopy of Stars Earlier than M0 within 40 pc-The Southern Sample
We are obtaining spectra, spectral types, and basic physical parametersfor the nearly 3600 dwarf and giant stars earlier than M0 in theHipparcos catalog within 40 pc of the Sun. Here we report on resultsfor 1676 stars in the southern hemisphere observed at Cerro TololoInter-American Observatory and Steward Observatory. These resultsinclude new, precise, homogeneous spectral types, basic physicalparameters (including the effective temperature, surface gravity, andmetallicity [M/H]), and measures of the chromospheric activity of ourprogram stars. We include notes on astrophysically interesting stars inthis sample, the metallicity distribution of the solar neighborhood, anda table of solar analogs. We also demonstrate that the bimodal nature ofthe distribution of the chromospheric activity parameterlogR'HK depends strongly on the metallicity, andwe explore the nature of the ``low-metallicity'' chromosphericallyactive K-type dwarfs.

Search for nearby stars among proper motion stars selected by optical-to-infrared photometry. III. Spectroscopic distances of 322 NLTT stars
Distance estimates based on low-resolution spectroscopy and Two MicronAll Sky Survey (2MASS) J magnitudes are presented for a large sample of322 nearby candidates from Luyten's NLTT catalogue. Mainly relativelybright (typically 7 < Ks < 11) and red high propermotion stars have been selected according to their 2MASS magnitudes andoptical-to-infrared colours (+1 < R-Ks < +7). Some LHSstars previously lacking spectroscopy have also been included. We haveclassified the majority of the objects as early-M dwarfs (M 2-M 5). Morethan 70% of our targets turned out to lie within the 25 pc horizon ofthe catalogue of nearby stars, with 50 objects placed within 15 pc and 8objects being closer than 10 pc. Three objects in the 10 pc sample haveno previously published spectral type: LP 876-10 (M 4), LP 870-65 (M4.5), and LP 869-26 (M 5). A large fraction of the objects in our sample(57%) have independent distance estimates, mainly by the recent effortsof Reid and collaborators. Our distance determinations are generally ingood agreement with theirs. 11 rather distant (d > 100 pc) objectshave also been identified, including a probable halo, but relatively hot(T_eff˜13 000 K) white dwarf (LHS 1200) and 10 red dwarfs withextremely large tangential velocities (250 < vt < 1150km s-1). Altogether, there are 11 red dwarfs (including onewithin 70 pc) with tangential velocities larger than about 250 kms-1. All these objects are suspected to be in fact subdwarfs,if so, their distances would be only about half of our originalestimates. The three most extreme objects in that respect are the K andearly M dwarfs LP 323-168, LHS 5343 and LP 552-21 with correcteddistances between 180 pc and 400 pc and resulting tangential velocitiesstill larger than about 400 km s-1.

Statistical Constraints for Astrometric Binaries with Nonlinear Motion
Useful constraints on the orbits and mass ratios of astrometric binariesin the Hipparcos catalog are derived from the measured proper motiondifferences of Hipparcos and Tycho-2 (Δμ), accelerations ofproper motions (μ˙), and second derivatives of proper motions(μ̈). It is shown how, in some cases, statistical bounds can beestimated for the masses of the secondary components. Two catalogs ofastrometric binaries are generated, one of binaries with significantproper motion differences and the other of binaries with significantaccelerations of their proper motions. Mathematical relations betweenthe astrometric observables Δμ, μ˙, and μ̈ andthe orbital elements are derived in the appendices. We find a remarkabledifference between the distribution of spectral types of stars withlarge accelerations but small proper motion differences and that ofstars with large proper motion differences but insignificantaccelerations. The spectral type distribution for the former sample ofbinaries is the same as the general distribution of all stars in theHipparcos catalog, whereas the latter sample is clearly dominated bysolar-type stars, with an obvious dearth of blue stars. We point outthat the latter set includes mostly binaries with long periods (longerthan about 6 yr).

Improved Astrometry and Photometry for the Luyten Catalog. II. Faint Stars and the Revised Catalog
We complete construction of a catalog containing improved astrometry andnew optical/infrared photometry for the vast majority of NLTT starslying in the overlap of regions covered by POSS I and by the secondincremental Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) release, approximately 44%of the sky. The epoch 2000 positions are typically accurate to 130 mas,the proper motions to 5.5 mas yr-1, and the V-J colors to0.25 mag. Relative proper motions of binary components are measured to 3mas yr-1. The false-identification rate is ~1% for11<~V<~18 and substantially less at brighter magnitudes. Theseimprovements permit the construction of a reduced proper-motion diagramthat, for the first time, allows one to classify NLTT stars intomain-sequence (MS) stars, subdwarfs (SDs), and white dwarfs (WDs). We inturn use this diagram to analyze the properties of both our catalog andthe NLTT catalog on which it is based. In sharp contrast to popularbelief, we find that NLTT incompleteness in the plane is almostcompletely concentrated in MS stars, and that SDs and WDs are detectedalmost uniformly over the sky δ>-33deg. Our catalogwill therefore provide a powerful tool to probe these populationsstatistically, as well as to reliably identify individual SDs and WDs.

Meeting the Cool Neighbors. II. Photometry of Southern NLTT Stars
We present BVRI photometry of 180 bright, southern nearby-starcandidates. The stars were selected from the New Luyten Two-Tenthsproper-motion catalog based on optical/infrared colors, constructed bycombining Luyten's mr estimates with near-infrared photometryfrom the Two Micron All Sky Survey. Photometric parallaxes derived fromV-Ks, V-I, and I-J colors, combined with the limitedavailable astrometry, show that as many as 108 stars may lie within 20pc of the Sun. Of these, 53 are new to nearby-star catalogs, includingthree within 10 pc of the Sun.
