The Indo-US Library of Coudé Feed Stellar Spectra
We have obtained spectra for 1273 stars using the 0.9 m coudéfeed telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. This telescope feedsthe coudé spectrograph of the 2.1 m telescope. The spectra havebeen obtained with the no. 5 camera of the coudé spectrograph anda Loral 3K×1K CCD. Two gratings have been used to provide spectralcoverage from 3460 to 9464 Å, at a resolution of ~1 Å FWHMand at an original dispersion of 0.44 Å pixel-1. For885 stars we have complete spectra over the entire 3460 to 9464 Åwavelength region (neglecting small gaps of less than 50 Å), andpartial spectral coverage for the remaining stars. The 1273 stars havebeen selected to provide broad coverage of the atmospheric parametersTeff, logg, and [Fe/H], as well as spectral type. The goal ofthe project is to provide a comprehensive library of stellar spectra foruse in the automated classification of stellar and galaxy spectra and ingalaxy population synthesis. In this paper we discuss thecharacteristics of the spectral library, viz., details of theobservations, data reduction procedures, and selection of stars. We alsopresent a few illustrations of the quality and information available inthe spectra. The first version of the complete spectral library is nowpublicly available from the National Optical Astronomy Observatory(NOAO) via ftp and http.

Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). The resulting sample includes some 2150 stars withhomogenized rotational velocities. Based on observations made atObservatoire de Haute Provence (CNRS), France. The proper motions of fundamental stars. I. 1535 stars from the Basic FK5
A direct combination of the positions given in the HIPPARCOS cataloguewith astrometric ground-based catalogues having epochs later than 1939allows us to obtain new proper motions for the 1535 stars of the BasicFK5. The results are presented as the catalogue Proper Motions ofFundamental Stars (PMFS), Part I. The median precision of the propermotions is 0.5 mas/year for mu alpha cos delta and 0.7mas/year for mu delta . The non-linear motions of thephotocentres of a few hundred astrometric binaries are separated intotheir linear and elliptic motions. Since the PMFS proper motions do notinclude the information given by the proper motions from othercatalogues (HIPPARCOS, FK5, FK6, etc.) this catalogue can be used as anindependent source of the proper motions of the fundamental stars.Catalogue (Table 3) is only available at the CDS via anonymous ftp tocdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strastg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/365/222

Fabry-Perot imaging of NGC 6090 in H2 emission
We have obtained an H2 v=1-0 S(1) image of a merging galaxysystem, NGC 6090, by using a Fabry-Perot imager. The H2emission originates between the double nuclei of pre-merger galaxies,and exhibits an arc-like or ring-like structure almost connecting thedouble nuclei. This structure is similar to that suggested for Arp 220from the velocity field measured by CO radio emission. The separation ofthe double nuclei in NGC 6090 is 5-6arcsec, corresponding to a projecteddistance of 3-4kpc. This is much larger than that of Arp 220 andsuggests that the molecular gas distribution can form an organized shapebetween the nuclei, such as a ring, in a rather early phase of merging.

The observational status of the Slowly Pulsating B star iota Herculis
New spectroscopic and photometric measurements are presented concerningthe SPB binary star iota Her. Our observations are spread over 10 years,and consist of 10 spectroscopic nights in 1985, 7 spectroscopic nightsand 22 photometric nights in 1987, and 15 spectroscopic nights in 1995.In addition, we analysed the photometric observations provided byHipparcos (1990-1993) as well as all published radial velocities. Weused all the spectroscopic data to refine the binary ephemeris. It wastherefore possible to study the pulsation variability properly. Despiteour large data set, only one frequency has been clearly established: nu1=0.28671 c.d-1, for which an ephemeris isprovided. Three other frequencies are detected: nu 2=0.43c.d-1, nu 3=0.77 c.d-1 and nu4=0.2483 c.d-1. The nu 2 frequency ispresent in most data sets, nu 4 is detected only in Hipparcosdata (longtime basis of homogeneous data set), while nu 3 isdetected in only one data set. The precision on the value of nu1 allowed us to estimate the phase-lag between photometricand spectroscopic variations for the first time in an SPB star. The lagof the photometric maxima with respect to those of velocity is around0.64 period i.e., significantly different from what is measured in theclasses of variable stars surrounding the SPB stars. The pulsationamplitude has varied in a complex way during the last 10 years. It hasincreased during the 3 years of photometric observations by Hipparcos,while a decrease by a factor 2 was observed in spectroscopic databetween 1985 and 1995. Periodograms of both photometric andspectroscopic variations show faint peaks in the [6;8] c.d-1and [15;25] c.d-1 frequency regions. However, one of our datasets, providing a good precision on the velocity variations, shows arather flat periodogram after 5 c.d-1, with no detectablepeak having an amplitude above 0.05 km s-1. Therefore, theserelatively high frequencies may have a transient nature. Although iotaHer is one of the best observed SPB star, its variability behaviour isstill uncertain, and long term monitoring is needed. Sixth Catalogue of Fundamental Stars (FK6). Part I. Basic fundamental stars with direct solutions
The FK6 is a suitable combination of the results of the HIPPARCOSastrometry satellite with ground-based data, measured over more than twocenturies and summarized in the FK5. Part I of the FK6 (abbreviatedFK6(I)) contains 878 basic fundamental stars with direct solutions. Suchdirect solutions are appropriate for single stars or for objects whichcan be treated like single stars. From the 878 stars in Part I, we haveselected 340 objects as "astrometrically excellent stars", since theirinstantaneous proper motions and mean (time-averaged) ones do not differsignificantly. Hence most of the astrometrically excellent stars arewell-behaving "single-star candidates" with good astrometric data. Thesestars are most suited for high-precision astrometry. On the other hand,199 of the stars in Part I are Δμ binaries in the sense ofWielen et al. (1999). Many of them are newly discovered probablebinaries with no other hitherto known indication of binarity. The FK6gives, besides the classical "single-star mode" solutions (SI mode),other solutions which take into account the fact that hidden astrometricbinaries among "apparently single-stars" introduce sizable "cosmicerrors" into the quasi-instantaneously measured HIPPARCOS proper motionsand positions. The FK6 gives in addition to the SI mode the "long-termprediction (LTP) mode" and the "short-term prediction (STP) mode". TheseLTP and STP modes are on average the most precise solutions forapparently single stars, depending on the epoch difference with respectto the HIPPARCOS epoch of about 1991. The typical mean error of anFK6(I) proper motion in the single-star mode is 0.35 mas/year. This isabout a factor of two better than the typical HIPPARCOS errors for thesestars of 0.67 mas/year. In the long-term prediction mode, in whichcosmic errors are taken into account, the FK6(I) proper motions have atypical mean error of 0.50 mas/year, which is by a factor of more than 4better than the corresponding error for the HIPPARCOS values of 2.21mas/year (cosmic errors included).

UBV photometry of Be stars at Hvar: 1972--1990
A summary of results of the systematic UBV photoelectric monitoring ofbright northern Be stars carried out at the Hvar Observatory between1972 and 1990 is presented. Altogether, 76 Be stars of all luminosityclasses were observed and 13,848 UBV measurements secured.Simultaneously, 9,648 UBV measurements of 48 check stars (most of themof early spectral types) were obtained. A careful transformation of allobservations into the standard Johnson system allowed detection andmonitoring of even very mild long-term light and colour variations ofthese objects. Almost all early-type Be stars in the sample turned outto be variable. For several stars phase-locked light variations relatedto their binary nature were established. Sudden brightenings, on a timescale of a few days, were detected for o Cas and QR Vul. The Relation between Rotational Velocities and Spectral Peculiarities among A-Type Stars

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Reliable photometric reductions to the standard UBV (or uvby) system and accurate UBV magnitudes of bright standard stars from the northern part of the international Be program
A modified method of computer reduction of UBV (or uvby) photoelectricobservations to standard systems, which combines advantages of what hasso far been achieved in this area, is described in detail. A completereduction of over 46000 UBV observations obtained at Hvar Observatorybetween 1972 and 1991, and of nearly 5000 UBV observations secured atSkalnate Pleso Observatory between 1980 and 1987, was carried out usingthe new technique. It is argued that replacing the original Johnson'sUBV values for the non-variable stars that were observed by the meanvalues based on repeated observations over several years and applyingthe new reduction technique can ensure a stable reproduction of UBVmagnitudes, obviously quite close to the standard Johnson's ones, overmany years and from observatories situated at very different altitudesabove sea level within about 0.01mag in all three UBV magnitudes. A listof new accurate mean UBV values of 191 stars which were regularlyobserved at Hvar - and a part of them also at Skalnate Pleso - ascomparison, check and standard stars in the Be- and Ap-star observingprograms, is included for future use by photometric observers in theNorthern Hemisphere. For a number of these stars, we can guaranteesecular constancy within 0.mag01 during the past 5 to 15 years.

A catalogue of right ascensions and declinations of FK4 stars
The position parameters of 578 stars from the fundamental catalog FK4are determined on the basis of 3-4-h meridian-circle observationsobtained by the differential method at Belgrade Astronomical Observatoryduring 1981-1987. The observation method and data-reduction proceduresare explained, and the results are compiled in extensive tables. Theaverage mean-square errors per observation are found to beepsilon(alpha) cos delta = + or - 0.022 sec and epsilon(delta) = + or -0.32 arcsec.

The equal-altitude method of quasi-absolute determination of star coordinates
Absolute coordinate values are determined for 86 objects on the basis ofdata obtained with Mark II photoelectric astrolabe No. 2 at BeijingAstronomical Observatory during the period 1979-1984. The equal-altitudemethod employed in the computations is described in detail, and theresults are presented in tables. The mean accuracy of the positioncorrections is given as + or - 1.6 msec in right ascension and + or -0.019 arcsec in declination.

Photoelectric monitoring of bright Be stars
The paper describes and summarizes BV photometric observations of 34bright, active Be stars made at various times between 1981 and 1987 witha 0.4-m telescope at the University of Toronto. These observationsdemonstrate the photometric variability of Be stars on time scales ofhours to years.

Two catalogues of FK4 right-ascension corrections and their application
The results of observations conducted as part of the regular timeservice with transit instruments at the Borowiec and BratislavaObservatories were used to work out catalogs of right-ascensioncorrections of the FK4 stars, included in the observational programs.The characteristics of both catalogs are presented in the paper.Comparisons between the catalogs as well as their comparison with thecompilation catalog produced on the basis of observations performed withastrolabes are given. The results of applying these right-ascensioncorrections to the re-reduction of universal time are also presented.

ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. I - A survey for duplicity among the bright stars
A survey of a sample of 672 stars from the Yale Bright Star Catalog(Hoffleit, 1982) has been carried out using speckle interferometry onthe 3.6-cm Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in order to establish thebinary star frequency within the sample. This effort was motivated bythe need for a more observationally determined basis for predicting thefrequency of failure of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) fine-guidancesensors to achieve guide-star lock due to duplicity. This survey of 426dwarfs and 246 evolved stars yielded measurements of 52 newly discoveredbinaries and 60 previously known binary systems. It is shown that thefrequency of close visual binaries in the separation range 0.04-0.25arcsec is 11 percent, or nearly 3.5 times that previously known.

The fourth meridian catalog of Besancon Observatory
The catalog presented gives differential meridian positions for 670F-type stars between plus 15 and plus 45 deg declination. The positionsare reduced to the equinox of 1950.0 without proper motions; 333 FK4stars were used as reference stars. A minimum of three and an average offive transits of each program star were observed photoelectrically usinga Gautier transit circle and a Hog grid. The internal accuracy ofindividual measurements is shown to range from 0.013 sec in rightascension and 0.30 arcsec in declination for brighter stars under betterobserving conditions to 0.020 sec in right ascension and 0.38 arcsec indeclination for fainter stars under worse conditions. The standarderrors were applied to compute weighted mean positions, mean epochs, andunweighted means for the program stars. Mean corrections for 283 FK4stars are also provided.

Meridian observations made in Brorfelde (Copenhagen University Observatory) 1975-76.
This catalogue presents positions for selected faint stars mainly fromAGK3 observed with the 7" transit circle at Brorfelde. The stars aredistributed in 43 selected areas around radio sources and are suitableas reference stars for measuring the optical counterparts to the radiosources. The obscr 'itioi cre carried out from 1975.16 to 1976.04, andevery star was observed at least two times giving a m.s.e. of "13 forthe catalogue positions given in the FK4 system. These positions usedtogether with AGK3 proper motions will in the period 1975 to 1980 have am.s.e. at the epoch ranging from `:13 to `:15, which is less than halfof what is expected when using AGK3 positions. Absolute luminosity calibration of Stroemgren's 'late group'
A statistical parallax method based on the principle of maximumlikelihood is used to calibrate absolute luminosities for samples ofcooler stars constituting the 'late group' defined by Stromgren (1966).The samples examined include 415 stars of all luminosity classes and asubset comprising 86 main-sequence stars. Linear calibration relationsinvolving the Stromgren beta, (b-y), and bracketted c1 indices arederived which yield mean absolute magnitudes with an accuracy of 0.09magnitude for the overall sample and 0.13 magnitude for themain-sequence subsample. Several second-order relations are considered,and the results are compared with Crawford's (1975) calibrations as wellas with mean absolute magnitudes obtained from trigonometric parallaxes.The possible effect of interstellar absorption on the calibrationrelations is also investigated.
