The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of ˜14 000 F and G dwarfs
We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age,kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our˜63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities,complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate,however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk,the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity,corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. Speckle Interferometry at the US Naval Observatory. VIII.
The results of 2044 speckle interferometric observations of doublestars, made with the 26 inch (66 cm) refractor of the US NavalObservatory, are presented. Each speckle interferometric observation ofa system represents a combination of over a thousand short-exposureimages. These observations are averaged into 1399 mean positions andrange in separation from 0.16" to 14.97", with a mean separation of2.51". This is the eighth in a series of papers presenting measuresobtained with this system and covers the period 2001 March 18 through2001 December 30.

Binary star speckle measurements at Calar Alto. I.
We present the first results of our speckle interferometric measurementsof binary stars made with the ICCD speckle camera using the 1.52-mtelescope of the Observatorio Astronomico Nacional at Calar Alto (Spain)in September, 1999. The data contain 123 observations of 83 systems. Themeasured angular separations range from 0farcs153 to 6farcs727 . We haveused there new speckle measurements to improve the orbital elements forthe binaries COU 247 and BU 524 AB.

Speckle Interferometry at the US Naval Observatory. VI.
The results of 1068 speckle interferometric observations of doublestars, made with the 26 inch (0.66 m) refractor of the US NavalObservatory, are presented. These observations are averaged into 841means of 815 binary stars. The systems range in separation from 0.22" to6.01" with a mean separation of 2.21" and have a limiting secondarymagnitude of V=12.5. This is the sixth in a series of papers presentingmeasures obtained with this system, and it covers the period 1999January 1 through 2000 January 9.

Speckle Interferometry at the US Naval Observatory. V.
The results of 1544 speckle interferometric observations of 637 binarystars, ranging in separation from 0.25" to 5.25", are tabulated. Theseobservations were obtained using the 66 cm refractor at the US NavalObservatory in Washington, DC, with an intensified CCD detector. This isthe fifth in a series of papers presenting measures obtained with thissystem and covers the period 1998 January 1 through December 31. Randomerrors for all measures are estimated to be 17.6 mas in separation and0.55d/ρ in position angle, where ρ is the separation inarcseconds.

Two-colour photometry for 9473 components of close Hipparcos double and multiple stars
Using observations obtained with the Tycho instrument of the ESAHipparcos satellite, a two-colour photometry is produced for componentsof more than 7 000 Hipparcos double and multiple stars with angularseparations 0.1 to 2.5 arcsec. We publish 9473 components of 5173systems with separations above 0.3 arcsec. The majority of them did nothave Tycho photometry in the Hipparcos catalogue. The magnitudes arederived in the Tycho B_T and V_T passbands, similar to the Johnsonpassbands. Photometrically resolved components of the binaries withstatistically significant trigonometric parallaxes can be put on an HRdiagram, the majority of them for the first time. Based on observationsmade with the ESA Hipparcos satellite.

Speckle Interferometry at the US Naval Observatory. IV.
The results of 1314 speckle interferometric observations of 625 binarystars, ranging in separation from 0.2" to 5.2" with a limiting secondarymagnitude of V=11, are tabulated. These observations were obtained usingthe 66 cm refractor at the US Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, withan intensified CCD detector. This is the fourth in a series of paperspresenting measures obtained with this equipment and covers the period1997 January 1 through December 31. Random errors for all measures areestimated to be 18 mas in separation and 0.57d/rho in position angle,where rho is the separation in arcseconds.

Speckle Interferometry at the US Naval Observatory. III.
Position angles and separations resulting from 2578 speckleinterferometric observations of 590 binary stars are tabulated. This isthe third in a series of papers presenting measures obtained using the66 cm refractor at the US Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, andcovers the period from 1995 June through 1996 December. Program starsrange in separation from 0.2" to 4.3", with a limiting magnitude ofV=11. Random errors are estimated to be 17.0 mas in separation and0.56d/rho in position angle, where rho is the separation in arcseconds.These are the first results acquired using an improved intensified CCDdetector. The new detector, in concert with an intensity-filteringtechnique applied in software, has permitted a 1 mag increase in dynamicrange, to 3.5 mag, for pairs separated by about 2". The instrumentationand calibration are briefly described, with an emphasis on thecharacteristics of the new detector. The software filter used toincrease the dynamic range is also described.

Speckle Interferometry at the US Naval Observatory. II.
Position angles and separations resulting from 2406 speckleinterferometric observations of 547 binary stars are tabulated. This isthe second in a series of papers presenting measures obtained using the66 cm refractor at the US Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, with anintensified CCD detector. Program stars range in separation from 0.2" to3.8", with Deltam<=2.5 mag and a limiting magnitude of V=10.0. Theobservation epochs run from 1993 January through 1995 August. Randomerrors are estimated to be 14 mas in separation and 0.52d/rho inposition angle, where rho is the separation in arcseconds. Theinstrumentation and calibration are briefly described. Aspects of thedata analysis related to the avoidance of systematic errors are alsodiscussed.

Visual binary orbits and masses POST HIPPARCOS
The parallaxes from Hipparcos are an important ingredient to derive moreaccurate masses for known orbital binaries, but in order to exploit theparallaxes fully, the orbital elements have to be known to similarprecision. The present work gives improved orbital elements for some 205systems by combining the Hipparcos astrometry with existing ground-basedobservations. The new solutions avoid the linearity constraints andomissions in the Hipparcos Catalog by using the intermediate TransitData which can be combined with ground-based observations in arbitarilycomplex orbital models. The new orbital elements and parallaxes give newmass-sum values together with realistic total error-estimates. To getindividual masses at least for main-sequence systems, the mass-ratioshave been generally estimated from theoretical isochrones and observedmagnitude-differences. For some 25 short-period systems, however, trueastrometric mass-ratios have been determined through the observedorbital curvature in the 3-year Hipparcos observation interval. Thefinal result is an observed `mass-luminosity relation' which falls closeto theoretical expectation, but with `outliers' due to undetectedmultiplicity or to composition- and age-effects in the nonuniformnear-star sample. Speckle Interferometry at the US Naval Observatory. I.
We present speckle interferometer measurements of 467 binary stars takenat the US Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, using the 66 cmrefractor, from 1990 October through 1992 December. The observingprogram is designed to provide high-quality observations of binaries inthe 0."3--3."5 range of separations and as faint as 10.0 mag. More than8000 measurements have been made to date, of which we report the resultsfor 2329. Not only is it our intent to provide accurate data forinteresting binary stars, but also, by careful calibration, to firmlyrelate the "classical" astrometry of binary stars to that being obtainedtoday by speckle and that which will soon be obtained by other moderntechniques such as long-baseline optical interferometry.

New Perspectives on AX Monocerotis
AX Moncerotis is a 232d, noneclipsing, interacting binary star thatconsists of a K giant, a Be-like giant, and large amounts ofcircumstellar material. The K star is almost certainly a synchronousrotator and is probably in contact with its critical lobe. The Be starwas believed to be a rapid rotator based on extremely wide absorptionlines, but new spectra show that these lines arise from thecircumstellar environment. Hydrogen emission, also circumstellar, ismany times stronger than the continuum. Near-ultraviolet light curvesexhibit a 0.5 mag dip near phase 0.75, but there is no such variabilityat longer wavelengths. Gas flow trajectories from the cusp of the K startoward the Be star provide a simple explanation for the photometric andspectroscopic behavior. We may have found a decreasing orbital period,but more data are necessary to confirm this result. We present severalmodels for AX Mon based on (1) new and archival visible photometry, (2)archival ultraviolet spectroscopy, (3) new and archival visiblespectroscopy, (4) new visible polarimetry, and (5) new radio photometry.Future observations, including optical interferometry, are proposed.

Micrometer measurements of visual double stars made at Nice
Three-hundred thirty-five micrometer measurements of visual double starsmade at Nice Observatory with the 50-cm and 74-cm refractors arereported. The tables give the Washington Catalog number, letters of thecomponents if the star is multiple, the Aitken Catalog number, theobservational epoch, the observed position angle and angular distance,the number of nights, and the name of the observer.

Photographic observations of visual double stars
Results are presented of photographic observations of 186 pairs ofvisual double stars, carried out with the 60-cm visual refractor of theBosscha Observatory at Lembang (Java) between 1984 and 1986. Theprocedures used in observations, measurements, and reducing wereidentical to those described by van Albada-van Dien (1983).

The early F-type stars - Refined classification, confrontation with Stromgren photometry, and the effects of rotation
The classification for early F-type stars in the MK spectralclassification system presented by Gray and Garrison (1987) is refined.The effect of rotation on spectral classification and ubvy-betaphotometry of early F-type stars is examined. It is found that theclassical luminosity criterion, the 4417 A/4481 A ratio givesinconsistent results. It is shown that most of the stars in the DeltaDelphini class of metallic-line stars are either normal or areindistinguishable from proto-Am stars. It is suggested that thedesignation Delta Delphini should be dropped. The classifications arecompared with Stromgren photometry. The effects of rotation on thedelta-c1 index in the early-F field dwarfs is demonstrated.

ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. II - Measurements during 1982-1985 from the Kitt Peak 4 M telescope
This paper represents the continuation of a systematic program of binarystar speckle interferometry initiated at the 4 m telescope on Kitt Peakin late 1975. Between 1975 and 1981, the observations were obtained witha photographic speckle camera, the data from which were reduced byoptical analog methods. In mid-1982, a new speckle camera employing anintensified charge-coupled device as the detector continued the programand necessitated the development of new digital procedures for reducingand analyzing speckle data. The camera and the data-processingtechniques are described herein. This paper presents 2780 newmeasurements of 1012 binary and multiple star systems, including thefirst direct resolution of 64 systems, for the interval 1982 through1985.

Photographic observations of visual double stars
Photographic observations of 238 pairs of visual binaries obtained on770 plates using the 60-cm visual refractor of Bosscha Observatory(Lembang, Java) during 1976-1979 are reported, continuing the catalog ofvan Albada-van Dien (1983). The data-reduction procedures are brieflydescribed, and the data are presented in a table.

Micrometric measurements of binary stars (first list)
The results of 167 micrometric measurements of 48 binaries, obtained atBrera-Merate Observatory with a 23 cm refractor during the periodSeptember 1982-February 1983, are given. Eighty-five measurements of 30systems found in the archives of the Association Amateurs of Astronomy'URANIA' of Genoa are also given. These measurements have been madeduring the period 1935-1937 with a professional refractor Salmoiraghi of156 mm diameter by Mantelli.

Photographic observations of visual double stars
The results of photographic observations of 199 visual double stars,obtained at the Bosscha Observatory at Lembang, Indonesia, in the years1958-1975 (with one 1953 plate) are presented. The material comprises708 plates with an average of 37 images measured per plate. A shortdescription of the program is given (cf. van Albada-van Dien, 1958).

Variability of the emission-line spectra and optical continua of Seyfert galaxies. I
H-beta and O III forbidden line 4959,5007 A line strengths obtained fromnew observations of 27 broad line-emitting galaxies and six narrowline-emitting galaxies are compared with earlier measurements. It isfound that about 80% of broad line-emitting galaxies show significantchanges in their optical spectra, on time scales of less than about fiveyears. An analysis of changes in O II forbidden line/H-beta ratio for 24broad line-emitting galaxies shows that (1) changes in the H-beta fluxare correlated with changes in the optical continuum, providing evidencefor energy input into the line-emitting region by photoionization, and(2) in a number of galaxies, the structure of the broad emission linesin complex, with detailed line structure changes on time scales shorterthan about two months.

10830 A He I observations of 455 stars
A comparison with K line, X-ray and other data, of 10830 A equivalentwidths (EW) measurements in 890 image tube spectra of 455 stars showsthat for the case of G stars, the EW correlates well with K lineintensity. Good correlation is also found between 10830 A EW and softX-ray fluxes, confirming the excitation of the line by coronal softX-rays, which can serve as a measure of coronal emission. It is alsofound that, in contradiction to published models, 10830 A is weak orabsent in O, B and A stars, and is absent in F and M supergiants.Moderate to high 10830 A EW is frequent in F and M dwarfs, G and Ksupergiants, and class K3 III. The 58 stars whose 10830 A EW was foundto be of 300 A or more should be relatively intense X-ray emitters.Almost all RS CVn stars show strong 10830 A absorption, and T Tauristars show both absorption and emission.

Photometric and astrometric observations of close visual binaries
The first photoelectric sequence for the magnitude differences of 215close visual binaries in the Johnson UBV and Stromgren uvby systems havebeen established. In addition, the position angle and the separation of140 stars were measured. Finally, for 134 stars, new photoelectricmeasurements of the combined integral brightness of both components inthe UBV and Stromgren systems were made. The measurements were carriedout using the area scanning technique.

Visual multiples. VII - MK classifications
Classifications are given for 865 components of visual multiples; theyshow no systematic differences from the MK system, and the random errorsare one subclass in type and two-thirds of a luminosity class. It isfound that at least 1% of the F-type IV and V stars are weak-lined, 32%of the A4-F1 IV and V stars are Am, and 5% of the A0-A3 IV and V starsare early-type Am. Attention is called to the large fraction (55%) ofthe A3-A9 III-V stars that are of luminosity classes III or IV, unlikethe percentage (16%) at neighboring types.
