Elemental abundances in the atmosphere of clump giants
Aims.The aim of this paper is to provide the fundamental parameters andabundances for a large sample of local clump giants with a highaccuracy. This study is a part of a big project, in which the verticaldistribution of the stars in the Galactic disc and the chemical anddynamical evolution of the Galaxy are being investigated. Methods:.The selection of clump stars for the sample group was made applying acolour-absolute magnitude window to nearby Hipparcos stars. Theeffective temperatures were estimated by the line depth ratio method.The surface gravities (log {g}) were determined by two methods (thefirst one was the method based on the ionization balance of iron and thesecond one was the method based on fitting of the wings of the Ca I6162.17 Å line). The abundances of carbon and nitrogen wereobtained from the molecular synthetic spectrum, and the Mg and Naabundances were derived using the non-LTE approximation. The "classical"models of stellar evolution without atomic diffusion androtation-induced mixing were employed. Results: .The atmosphericparameters ({T_eff}, log {g}, [Fe/H], {Vt}) and Li, C, N, O,Na, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ni abundances in 177 clump giants of the Galacticdisc were determined. The underabundance of carbon, overabundance ofnitrogen, and "normal" abundance of oxygen were detected. A small sodiumoverabundance was found. A possibility of a selection of the clumpgiants based on their chemical composition and the evolutionary trackswas explored. Conclusions: .The theoretical predictions based onthe classical stellar evolution models are in good agreement with theobserved surface variations of the carbon and nitrogen just after thefirst dredge-up episode. The giants show the same behaviour of thedependencies of O, Mg, Ca, and Si (α-elements) and Ni (iron-peakelement) abundances vs. [Fe/H] as dwarfs do. This allows us to use suchabundance ratios to study the chemical and dynamical evolution of theGalaxy.

Coronagraphic Imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph
The unfiltered Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) CCD in tandemwith focal plane wedges and a Lyot stop provides a simple white-lightcoronagraph with a bandpass of 0.2-1.0 μm, which has been used sincelate 1998 to image nebulosity around stars in the ranges0.34<=V<=14 and -0.03<=B-V<=1.65. The residual starlightseen in STIS coronagraphic images includes diffraction spikes due to theHubble Space Telescope (HST) secondary support structure, lacks distinctAiry rings, and varies smoothly with radius from the star. Thepoint-spread function (PSF) shape is a strong function of the sourcespectral energy distribution: we find that the PSF template needs todiffer from the occulted source color by Δ(B-V)<=0.08 mag.Optimal PSF removal is achieved for contemporary template observationsmatched to HST orbital phase of the science observations. Use ofnoncontemporary PSF templates can degrade the limiting contrast by up toa factor of 10-12 at r<=2''. These systematic effects arenegligible when the nebular surface brightness is comparable to theresidual starlight, and they become progressively more important assurface brightness decreases. STIS has been used to detect circumstellarenvelopes and protoplanetary disks with surface brightnesses spanning10-4 to 10-7 per HST resolution element perFstar at 2" from the star, debris disks withFIR/Fstar>=0.001, and emission-line nebulosityassociated with bipolar outflows. The limiting contrast for single-orbitintegrations with the star placed at a location where the coronagraphicwedge is 1.0" wide is 10-8 per HST resolution element perFstar for 6<=V<=8 stars. Deeper imagery can be obtainedby placing the star off the active detector area. When the star is 5"from the detector, a limiting contrast for a single-orbit integration of2.5×10-10 per HST resolution element perFstar is reached. At this contrast level, background objectsand the stellar color variability prevent further improvement byco-adding data from multiple orbits.Based on observations made with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope,obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated bythe Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., underNASA contract NAS 5-26555. Evolved GK stars near the sun. I - The old disk population
A sample of nearly two thousand GK giants with intermediate band, (R,I),DDO and Geneva photometry has been assembled. Astrometric data is alsoavailable for most of the stars. The some 800 members of the old diskpopulation in the sample yield accurate luminosities (from two sources),reddening values and chemical abundances from calibrations of thephotometric parameters. Less than one percent of the objects arepeculiar in the sense that the flux distribution is abnormal. Thepeculiarity is signaled by strong CH (and Ba II) and weak CH. The CH+stars are all spectroscopic binaries, probably with white dwarfcompanions, whereas the CH- stars are not. A broad absorption band,centered near 3500 A, is found in the CH+ stars whereas the CH- objectshave a broad emission feature in the same region. The intensity of theseabsorptions and emissions are independent of the intensity of abnormalspectral features. Ten percent of the old disk sample have a heavyelement abundance from one and a half to three times the solar value.The distribution of the heavy element abundances is nearly a normal onewith a peak near solar abundance and ranges three times to one sixthsolar. The distribution of the (U, V) velocities is independent of theheavy element abundance and does not appear to be random. Ten percent ofthe old disk stars show a CN anomaly, equally divided between CN strongand CN weak. Several stars of individual astrometric or astrophysicalimportance are isolated.

Large and kinematically unbiased samples of G- and K-type stars. IV - Evolved stars of the old disk population
Modified Stromgren and (R,I) photometry, along with DDO and Genevaphotometry, are presented for a complete sample of evolved old-disk Gand K giants in the Bright Star Catalogue. Stars with ages of between1.5 x 10 to the 9th and 10 to the 10th yr are found to have anear-normal distribution of heavy element abundances, centered on anFe/H abundance ratio of -0.1 dex. The old disk clusters NGC 3680 and IC4651 contain red-straggler young-disk giants that are probablycontemporaries of the blue stragglers in the clusters.

Large and kinematically unbiased samples of G- and K-type stars. II - Observations of evolved stars in the Bright Star sample. III - Evolved young disk stars in the Bright Star sample
Four color and RI observations were obtained for a large sample ofG-type and K-type stars in the Bright Star Catalogue. Data are firstpresented for 110 evolved stars. Photometry of evolved young diskpopulation stars have then been calibrated for luminosity, reddening,and metallicity on the basis of results for members of the Hyades andSirius superclusters. New DDO results are given for 120 stars.

E. W. Fick Observatory stellar radial velocity measurements. I - 1976-1984
Stellar radial velocity observations made with the large vacuumhigh-dispersion photoelectric radial velocity spectrometer at FickObservatory are reported. This includes nearly 2000 late-type starsobserved during 585 nights. Gradual modifications to this instrumentover its first eight years of operation have reduced the observationalerror for high-quality dip observations to + or - 0.8 km/s.

Radial velocities of southern HR stars. II
Fick Observatory's second major installment of radial-velocitymeasurements of bright southern stars is presented. This includes 373radial-velocity measurements for 90 stars which were obtained betweenJanuary 1978 and June 1981. Fifteen new possible velocity variables andone new double-line spectroscopic binary (HD 1782) have been detected.Subsequent velocity measurements of stars from the first southern HRstudy (Beavers and Eitter, 1980) found that (1) two stars (HR 0745 andHR 5428), originally classified as possible variables, are actuallyconstant velocity variables, and that (2) HR 0953 is a definite velocityvariable covering a range of at least -1 to +14 km/sec. This study, whencombined with the earlier southern HR observations and those reported byGriffin (1972), result in a total of 280 HR objects with newradial-velocity determinations.
