Catalogue of averaged stellar effective magnetic fields. I. Chemically peculiar A and B type stars
This paper presents the catalogue and the method of determination ofaveraged quadratic effective magnetic fields < B_e > for 596 mainsequence and giant stars. The catalogue is based on measurements of thestellar effective (or mean longitudinal) magnetic field strengths B_e,which were compiled from the existing literature.We analysed the properties of 352 chemically peculiar A and B stars inthe catalogue, including Am, ApSi, He-weak, He-rich, HgMn, ApSrCrEu, andall ApSr type stars. We have found that the number distribution of allchemically peculiar (CP) stars vs. averaged magnetic field strength isdescribed by a decreasing exponential function. Relations of this typehold also for stars of all the analysed subclasses of chemicalpeculiarity. Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). A highly sensitive search for magnetic fields in B, A and F stars
Circular spectropolarimetric observations of 74 stars were obtained inan attempt to detect magnetic fields via the longitudinal Zeeman effectin their spectral lines. The sample observed includes 22 normal B, A andF stars, four emission-line B and A stars, 25 Am stars, 10 HgMn stars,two lambda Boo stars and 11 magnetic Ap stars. Using the Least-SquaresDeconvolution multi-line analysis approach (Donati et al.\cite{donati97etal}), high precision Stokes I and V mean signatures wereextracted from each spectrum. We find absolutely no evidence formagnetic fields in the normal, Am and HgMn stars, with upper limits onlongitudinal field measurements usually considerably smaller than anypreviously obtained for these objects. We conclude that if any magneticfields exist in the photospheres of these stars, these fields are notordered as in the magnetic Ap stars, nor do they resemble the fields ofactive late-type stars. We also detect for the first time a field in theA2pSr star HD 108945 and make new precise measurements of longitudinalfields in five previously known magnetic Ap stars, but do not detectfields in five other stars classified as Ap SrCrEu. We also report newresults for several binary systems, including a new vsin i for therapidly rotating secondary of the Am-delta Del SB2 HD 110951. Based onobservations obtained using the MuSiCoS spectropolarimeter on theBernard Lyot telescope, l'Observatoire du Pic du Midi, France.

Discovery of New Candidate Vega-type Systems from IRAS and the 2 Micron All-Sky Survey
We obtained J (1.25 μm), H (1.65 μm), and Ks (2.17μm) photometry from the 2 Micron All-Sky Survey and 12, 25, 60, and100 μm photometry from the IRAS Faint Source Catalog of 2834 fieldstars. We identified in this sample 296 main-sequence (luminosity classIV, IV-V, or V) stars. We searched the sample of main-sequence stars forexcess 12 μm emission with respect to J, H, and Ksphotospheric emission. We discovered eight systems with 12 μm excessemission newly reported here. These excesses are likely to be fromVega-type circumstellar dust, but small-aperture photometry is needed toconfirm their nature. Preliminary models that assume the excesses arecircumstellar show the dust to be located ~1-10 AU from the stars, whereit is heated to ``terrestrial'' temperatures, ~200-500 K. Colder dustmight also exist in the systems but below the IRAS sensitivity limit.The exception is HD 93331 (B9.5 V), previously known for its IRASfar-infrared excess.

Search for magnetic fields in HgMn stars by using relative strengths of multiplet 74 Fe II lines
The anomalous strength of the Fe II lambda 6147.7 line relative to Fe IIlambda 6149.2 in the stars with magnetic fields is used for detectingmagnetic fields in very slowly rotating HgMn stars. The diagnosis basedon this pair of magnetically sensitive Fe lines is a simple and fasttool, but its application to more rapidly rotating HgMn stars ishampered by blending with Hg II lambda 6149.5. For spectra ofsharp-lined HgMn stars (with v sin i<4 km s(-1) ) taken at highresolving power (R>= 100 000) both lines, Fe II lambda 6149.25 and HgII lambda 6149.48, become fully unblended. The observed relativedifferences between the equivalent widths of the two Fe II lines arecompared with those derived from synthetic spectra computed byneglecting magnetic field effects. This comparison has shown that threeHgMn stars, HD 175640, HD 178065 and HD 186122 are very likely topossess a magnetic field that could be larger than 2 kG. MSC - a catalogue of physical multiple stars
The MSC catalogue contains data on 612 physical multiple stars ofmultiplicity 3 to 7 which are hierarchical with few exceptions. Orbitalperiods, angular separations and mass ratios are estimated for eachsub-system. Orbital elements are given when available. The catalogue canbe accessed through CDS (Strasbourg). Half of the systems are within 100pc from the Sun. The comparison of the periods of close and widesub-systems reveals that there is no preferred period ratio and allpossible combinations of periods are found. The distribution of thelogarithms of short periods is bimodal, probably due to observationalselection. In 82\% of triple stars the close sub-system is related tothe primary of a wide pair. However, the analysis of mass ratiodistribution gives some support to the idea that component masses areindependently selected from the Salpeter mass function. Orbits of wideand close sub-systems are not always coplanar, although thecorresponding orbital angular momentum vectors do show a weak tendencyof alignment. A search for radio emission from the 'nonmagnetic' chemically peculiar stars
We have observed 23 members of the Am and HgMn subclasses of chemicallypeculiar (CP) stars with the Very Large Array (VLA) to search fornonthermal radio emission at levels comparable to those found for the Siand He peculiar subclasses of the CP stars by Linsky et al. (1992). Thisstudy was motivated by recent claims that magnetic fields of kilogaussstrength are present in at least some of the Am and HgMn stars, contraryto previous beliefs, which would indicate that radio-emittingmagnetospheres could be present in these stars. We detected none of theAm and HgMn stars as radio emitters with upper limits typically lessthan 0.20 mJy. Applying a correlation between radio luminosity, surfacemagnetic field, and effective temperature derived from previous radiostudies of the Si and He peculiar CP stars, we find that the predictedradio luminosities of alpha And (an HgMn star) and Sirius (a hot Amstar) are more than an order of magnitude larger than the observed upperlimits, indicating that these stars lack magnetospheres, and, byinference, surface magnetic fields.

A search for magnetic fields in AM stars
Although Am stars have been assumed to be nonmagnetic stars, we foundrecently that the hot Am stars omicron Peg has a magnetic field of theorder of 2 kG, with a complex structure. Therefore, we reconsidered thequestion of magnetism among upper main sequence chemically peculiarstars. We report here new observations of a pair of magneticallysensitive Fe II lines in the red spectrum of Am stars and of HgMn stars.Two other hot Am stars, HD 29173 and HD 195479A, are likely to possessalso a magnetic field of about the same strength. It is striking that 3out of 4 hot Am stars observed up to now could be magnetic. On the otherhand, this fast method is limited by blends and cannot provide asatisfactory diagnosis for classical Am stars and for HgMn stars. Amulti-line approach must be the next step towards our understanding ofmagnetism among these chemically peculiar stars.

A preliminary compilation of DS-programme star positions
A catalog is presented of the double-star-program (DS-program) starpositions, listing right ascensions for 930 DSs and declinations for1225 DSs of the program. The positions were compiled from the observedvalues obtained between 1980 and 1987 with the meridian circles of sixUSSR observatories (the Moscow, Kazan', Kiev, Khar'kov, Odessa, andTashkent Observatories) and the Belgrade Observatory. The measurementsand the treatment of the observational material were performed using therelative method, and the FK-4 system stars were used as reference stars.

Maximum separations among cataloged binaries
The paper classifies many of the widest common-motion binaries listed inthe Aitken catalog and list 72 physical pairs with known photoelectricphotometry, 31 physical pairs without good photometry, and 27 opticalpairs. As a function of primary types, the physical systems have upperlimits to their separations that are exceeded by some of the opticalpairs. The fact that optical pairs occur with larger separations impliesthat the limits are real ones and not just catalog limitations. Thoselimits (in AU) are expressed by 2500 M1 exp 1.54 for B5-KO main-sequenceprimaries. The same limits hold for the Trapezium and hierarchicalsystems studied previously.

The nature of the visual companions of AP and AM stars
The stars in 43 visual multiples with Ap or Am primaries have beenclassified, and the fraction of systems that have Ap or Am secondariesis counted. The numbers of Ap secondaries are too few to be informative,but an apparent excess of Am secondaries is found. That result isunderstandable in terms of the (published) moderate correlation inrotational velocities between components in visual multiples. But invarious open clusters, the variations in frequencies of Ap and Am starscan be explained probably as statistical fluctuations in small numbersof stars, indicating no tendency for abnormal stars to group togetherfor dimensions larger than those of visual multiples.

Photographic observations of visual double stars
The results of photographic observations of 199 visual double stars,obtained at the Bosscha Observatory at Lembang, Indonesia, in the years1958-1975 (with one 1953 plate) are presented. The material comprises708 plates with an average of 37 images measured per plate. A shortdescription of the program is given (cf. van Albada-van Dien, 1958).

Ages and uvbybeta photometry of wide visual binaries. II
Visual magnitudes and color indices b-y, m1, c1 and beta have beenobtained for the members of 39 double or multiple systems containingstars with magnitudes greater than 4m. Relationships between stellarages, spectral types and photometric indices are given from a sample ofabout 3,500 stars. Data is presented with regard to MK spectral types,the separation, and absolute magnitudes; also tabulated are the meanvalues of photometric unreddened indices with their standard deviationfor intervals of 0.2 in log age. From calculations for each binary ofthe relative difference in the ages of the components and the differencein the effective temperatures, an increase in the relative differencesin ages with the differences in temperatures is noted.

Metallicism and pulsation - The marginal metallic line stars
Evidence is presented that HR 4594 and HR 8210 are pulsating marginal Amstars. It is suggested that (1) classical Am stars do not pulsate, (2)evolved Am stars may pulsate, and (3) marginal Am stars may pulsate. Itis further suggested that, within the Am domain, temperature, age,rotation, and pulsation are sufficient to determine whether a star willbe Am, marginal Am, or spectrally normal.
