Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). Properties of the close binary and circumbinary torus of the Red Rectangle
New diffraction-limited speckle images of the RedRectangle in the wavelength range 2.1-3.3 mu m with angularresolutions of 44-68 mas (Tuthill et al. \cite{Tuthill_etal2002}) andprevious speckle images at 0.7-2.2 mu m (Osterbart et al.\cite{Osterbart_etal1997}; Men'shchikov et al.\cite{Men'shchikov_etal1998}) revealed well-resolved bright bipolaroutflow lobes and long X-shaped spikes originating deep inside theoutflow cavities. This set of high-resolution images stimulated us toreanalyze all infrared observations of the RedRectangle using our two-dimensional radiative transfer code.The high-resolution images imply a geometrically and optically thicktorus-like density distribution with bipolar conical cavities and areinconsistent with the flat disk geometry frequently used to visualizebipolar nebulae. The new detailed modeling, together with estimates ofthe interstellar extinction in the direction of the RedRectangle enabled us to more accurately determine one of thekey parameters, the distance D ~ 710 pc with model uncertainties of 70pc, which is twice as far as the commonly used estimate of 330 pc. Thecentral binary is surrounded by a compact, massive (M ~ 1.2Msun), very dense dusty torus with hydrogen densitiesreaching nH ~ 2.5 x 1012 cm-3(dust-to-gas mass ratio \rhod/\rho ~ 0.01). The model impliesthat most of the dust mass in the dense torus is in very large particlesand, on scales of more than an arcsecond, the polar outflow regions aredenser than the surrounding medium. The bright component of thespectroscopic binary HD 44179 is a post-AGB star withmass M\star ~ 0.57 Msun, luminosityL\star ~ 6000 Lsun, and effective temperatureT\star ~ 7750 K. Based on the orbital elements of the binary,we identify its invisible component with a helium white dwarf withMWD ~ 0.35 Msun, LWD ~ 100Lsun, and TWD ~ 6 x 104 K. The hotwhite dwarf ionizes the low-density bipolar outflow cavities inside thedense torus, producing a small H II region observed at radiowavelengths. We propose an evolutionary scenario for the formation ofthe Red Rectangle nebula, in which the binaryinitially had 2.3 and 1.9 Msun components at a separation of~ 130 Rsun. The nebula was formed in the ejection of a commonenvelope after Roche lobe overflow by the present post-AGB star.

Rotational velocities of A-type stars. I. Measurement of v sin i in the southern hemisphere
Within the scope of a Key Programme determining fundamental parametersof stars observed by HIPPARCOS, spectra of 525 B8 to F2-type starsbrighter than V=8 have been collected at ESO. Fourier transforms ofseveral line profiles in the range 4200-4500 Å are used to derivev sin i from the frequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis ofthe sample indicates that measurement error is a function of v sin i andthis relative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 6%on average. The results obtained are compared with data from theliterature. There is a systematic shift from standard values from\citet{Slk_75}, which are 10 to 12% lower than our findings. Comparisonswith other independent v sin i values tend to prove that those fromSlettebak et al. are underestimated. This effect is attributed to thepresence of binaries in the standard sample of Slettebak et al., and tothe model atmosphere they used. Speckle Interferometry of New and Problem Hipparcos Binaries. II. Observations Obtained in 1998-1999 from McDonald Observatory
The Hipparcos satellite made measurements of over 9734 known doublestars, 3406 new double stars, and 11,687 unresolved but possible doublestars. The high angular resolution afforded by speckle interferometrymakes it an efficient means to confirm these systems from the ground,which were first discovered from space. Because of its coverage of adifferent region of angular separation-magnitude difference(ρ-Δm) space, speckle interferometry also holds promise toascertain the duplicity of the unresolved Hipparcos ``problem'' stars.Presented are observations of 116 new Hipparcos double stars and 469Hipparcos ``problem stars,'' as well as 238 measures of other doublestars and 246 other high-quality nondetections. Included in these areobservations of double stars listed in the Tycho-2 Catalogue andpossible grid stars for the Space Interferometry Mission.

Metal abundances of field A and Am stars
Detailed abundances of 9 field A and Am stars are derived for Mg, Ca,Sc, Cr, Fe, and Ni using high resolution spectroscopy. Most of oursample Am stars show the characteristic deficiencies of Ca and Sc on onehand, and the overabundances of the iron peak elements on the other,which is consistent with the predictions of the diffusion model for MainSequence or slightly evolved stars. There seems to be a correlationbetween abundances of Ca and Sc and the effective temperature for starsof similar age: the abundance of Ca increases with increasing masswhereas that of Sc decreases. Two of our Am stars have a differentabundance pattern: Ca is overabundant in the hot magnetic Am star o Pegand its abundance is nearly normal in the metallic giant star rho Pup.The other objects of our sample have globally a solar composition except28 And, which shows significant deficiencies for most the studiedelements. Radial velocities of HIPPARCOS southern B8-F2 type stars
Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of B8-F2 type starsobserved by the Hipparcos satellite. Observations were obtained withinthe framework of an ESO key-program. Radial velocities have beenmeasured using a cross-correlation method, the templates being a grid ofsynthetic spectra. The obtained precision depends on effectivetemperature and projected rotational velocity of the star as well as ona possible asymmetry of the correlation peak generally due to secondarycomponents. New spectroscopic binaries have been detected from theseasymmetries and the variability of the measured radial velocity.Simulations of binary and triple systems have been performed. Forbinaries our results have been compared with Hipparcos binary data.Adding the variable radial velocities, the minimum binary fraction hasbeen found 60% for physical systems. Radial velocities have beendetermined for 581 B8-F2 stars, 159 being new. Taking into accountpublished radial velocities, 39% south A-type stars with V magnitudelower than 7.5 have a radial velocity. An extensive Delta a-photometric survey of southern B and A type bright stars
Photoelectric photometry of 803 southern BS objects in the Deltaa-system as detection tool for magnetic chemically peculiar (=CP2) starshas been carried out and compared to published spectral types. Thestatistical yield of such objects detected by both techniques ispractically the same. We show that there are several factors whichcontaminate the search for these stars, but this contamination is onlyof the order of 10% in both techniques. We find a smooth transition fromnormal to peculiar stars. Our sample exhibits the largest fraction ofCP2 stars at their bluest colour interval, i.e. 10% of all stars in thecolour range -0.19 <= B-V < -0.10 or -0.10 <= b-y < -0.05.No peculiar stars based on the Delta a-criterion were found at bluercolours. Towards the red side the fraction of CP2 stars drops to about3% for positive values of B-V or b-y with red limits roughlycorresponding to normal stars of spectral type A5. The photometricbehaviour of other peculiar stars: Am, HgMn, delta Del, lambda Boo, Heabnormal stars, as well as Be/shell stars and supergiants shows someslight, but definite deviations from normal stars. Spectroscopic andvisual binaries are not distinguished from normal stars in their Delta abehaviour. The results of this work justify larger statistical work(e.g. in open clusters) employing more time-saving photometric methods(CCD). \newpage Based on observations obtained at the European SouthernObservatory, La Silla, Chile. Near-infrared adaptive optics imaging of dust shells around five late-type stars with COME-ON+
Near-infrared images of circumstellar dust shells around five late typestars have been obtained with the ESO - COME-ON+ adaptive optics systemin 1994 September. Full angular resolution of the 3.60 m ESO - La Sillatelescope was achieved at 1.25, 1.65 and 2.2 microns (respectively 0.09,0.12 and 0.15 \arcsec of angular resolution). The Angular Momentum of Main Sequence Stars and Its Relation to Stellar Activity
Rotational velocities are reported for intermediate-mass main sequencestars it the field. The measurements are based on new, high S/N CCDspectra from the Coudé Feed Telescope of the Kitt Peak NationalObservatory. We analyze these rotation rates for a dependence on bothmass and age. We compare the average rotation speeds of the field starswith mean velocities for young stars in Orion, the Alpha Persei cluster,the Pleiades, and the Hyades. The average rotation speeds of stars moremassive than $\sim1.6$ \msun\experience little or no change during theevolutionary lifetimes of these stars on the zero age main sequence orwithin the main sequence band. Less massive stars in the range betwee n1.6\msun\ and 1.3\msun\ also show little decline in mean rotation ratewhile they are on the main sequence, and at most a factor of 2 decreasein velocity as they evolve off the main sequence. The {\it e}-foldingtime for the loss of angular momentum b y the latter group of stars isat least 1--2 billion years. This inferred characteristic time scale forspindown is far longer than the established rotational braking time forsolar-type stars with masses below $\sim1.3$ \msun. We conclude from acomparison of the trends in rotation with trends in chromospheric andcoronal activity that the overall decline in mean rotation speed alongthe main sequence, from $\sim2$ \msun\ down to $\sim1.3$ \msun, isimposed during the pre-main sequence phase of evolution, and that thispattern changes little thereafter while the star resides on the mainsequence. The magnetic activity implicated in the rotational spindown ofthe Sun and of similar stars during their main sequence lifetimes mus ttherefore play only a minor role in determining the rotation rates ofthe intermediate mass stars, either because a solar-like dynamo is weakor absent, or else the geometry of the magnetic field is appreciablyless effective in removing angular momentu m from these stars. A catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations: 1996 edition
A fifth Edition of the Catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations is presentedherewith. It contains 5946 determinations for 3247 stars, including 751stars in 84 associations, clusters or galaxies. The literature iscomplete up to December 1995. The 700 bibliographical referencescorrespond to [Fe/H] determinations obtained from high resolutionspectroscopic observations and detailed analyses, most of them carriedout with the help of model-atmospheres. The Relation between Rotational Velocities and Spectral Peculiarities among A-Type Stars

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Abundance distribution of A-F giant stars
The detailed spectroscopic analysis of A-F giant stars is presentedwhich show photometric characteristics of the classical Am stars. Theresults of the three newly studied stars (HR 6492, HR 8222, and HR 8392)reveal that these stars exhibit the same behavior as the previous ones,with abundance distributions similar to those of delta Delphini stars.It is pointed out that in HR 8222 the distribution abundance of rareearth and associated elements follows without ambiguity the odd-eveneffect. A general enhancement by a factor of about four with respect tothe solar abundance pattern is observed.

The A and Am-Fm stars. I - The abundances of Li, Al, Si, and Fe
An observational investigation of 25 A and Am stars is presented inwhich a model-atmosphere abundance analysis is used to determine thephotospheric abundances of Li, Al, Si, and Fe. Results of the presentobservations are combined with the observations of Hyades by Burkhart etal. (1989) to develop homogeneous results from a large sample. All ofthe elements except Li are found to be constant as a function oftemperature for Am stars, and Al and Fe are moderately enhanced forA4-F1 stars. The abundance range of Li can be twice that of Al, Si, andFe in Am normal stars, and other stars exhibit Li deficiencies that areinterpreted as indicative of weak evolution. The abundances of Li, Ca,and Zr are also considered in terms of diffusion theory for Am stars,and references to the hydrogen-convection and diffusion zones are made.

Li I-resonance-doublet observations and the abundance of lithium in AM and Delta Del stars
In a sample of a few Am, Delta Delphini, and reference main sequence Fstars, the LiI resonance line at 6707 A has been observed. In Am stars,Li may be overabundant, normal, or underabundant with respect to thecosmic abundance; the range is as large as two orders of magnitude, andthe abundance dependence on temperature does not seem simple. In DeltaDelphini stars, Li may be slightly overabundant, normal, orunderabundant, with an abundance range of about two orders of magnitude.It is asserted that both components of the double-line spectroscopicbinary Am star HR 8293 are overabundant in Li. Microscopic diffusionprocesses, possibly connected with mass loss, lead to normal, over-, orunderabundances of Li for the Am stars.

Metallicism among A and F giant stars
132 stars considered as A and F giants have been studied for theirproperties in the Geneva photometric system. It is shown that thissystem to derive the temperature, absolute magnitude and Fe/H value forstars in this part of the HR diagram. 36 percent of the stars of oursample exhibit an enhanced value Delta m2 that can be interpreted interms of Fe/H. The red limit of stars having an enhanced Fe/H value is0.225 in B2-V1 or 6500 K in Teff. This corresponds to the limit definedby Vauclair and Vauclair (1982) where the diffusion timescale is equalto the stellar lifetime and permits the assumption that the diffusion isthe process responsible for the metallicism observed in the A and Fgiants.

Radial velocities of bright southern stars. V - 146 Population II F stars and related stars
This paper presents new radial velocity determinations, based on 20 A/mmcoude plates, for 146 southern stars brighter than m(v) = 8.3. Drawnfrom the catalog of uvby-beta photometry of southern A5-G0 stars byOlsen (1983), the program stars are certain or suspected Population IIstars. One triple-lined and 10 double-lined binaries have been detected,including HD 210737, for which a preliminary orbit has been derived.Notes on spectral peculiarities are given.

Properties of Am, Delta Del and Delta SCT stars in the VBLUW system
The spread with respect to the main sequence in the two-color diagramsfor 115 Am, Delta Del and Delta Sct, for which VBLUW photometricobservations have been obtained, is primarily attributed to gravityeffects. Exceptions to this rule can be recognized from a comparison oftheir positions in these diagrams and in the reddening-independentdiagram L-U/B-L, where some Delta Sct stars have experienced relativelyhigh reddenings, while others are presumably metal-poor. It is notedthat gravities and temperatures compare satisfactorily with those ofDavis Philip et al. (1976), which were based on uvby-beta photometry.

UBVRI photometry of 225 AM stars
UBVRI photometry of 225 Am stars taken from Mendoza's (1974) catalog ispresented. The results are compared with those obtained by Feinstein(1974) for 21 of the stars and with the values of Johnson et al. (1966).It is assumed that in the first approximation the (V-I) color index ofan unreddened Am star is equal to that of a normal main-sequence star; astandard main sequence is defined for A and early F stars, and thefive-color photometry is analyzed by means of plots of U-V vs. V-I, B-Vvs. V-I, and V-R vs. V-I. Mean color deficiencies of Am stars areexamined, and it is suggested that an unreddened star located below themain-sequence A0-F2 line in the (V-I, U-V) plane is a photometric Amstar. It is concluded that: (1) photometric Am stars have colordeficiencies (as a function of V-I) which, on the average, are 0.07 magin (U-V) color index and 0.025 mag in (B-V) color index; (2) Am starswith V-R less than 0.25 mag may also have a color deficiency of about0.01 mag; (3) Am stars with V-R greater than 0.3 mag may have a colorexcess of approximately 0.01 mag; and (4) Am stars with V-R between 0.25and 0.3 mag may have normal colors.
