On the Period-Luminosity-Colour-Metallicity relation and the pulsational characteristics of lambda Bootis type stars
Generally, chemical peculiarity found for stars on the upper mainsequence excludes delta Scuti type pulsation (e.g. Ap and Am stars), butfor the group of lambda Bootis stars it is just the opposite. This makesthem very interesting for asteroseismological investigations. The groupof lambda Bootis type stars comprises late B- to early F-type,Population I objects which are basically metal weak, in particular theFe group elements, but with the clear exception of C, N, O and S. Thepresent work is a continuation of the studies by Paunzen et al.(\cite{Pau97}, \cite{Pau98}), who presented first results on thepulsational characteristics of the lambda Bootis stars. Since then, wehave observed 22 additional objects; we found eight new pulsators andconfirmed another one. Furthermore, new spectroscopic data (Paunzen\cite{Pau01}) allowed us to sort out misidentified candidates and to addtrue members to the group. From 67 members of this group, only two arenot photometrically investigated yet which makes our analysis highlyrepresentative. We have compared our results on the pulsationalbehaviour of the lambda Bootis stars with those of a sample of deltaScuti type objects. We find that at least 70% of all lambda Bootis typestars inside the classical instability strip pulsate, and they do sowith high overtone modes (Q < 0.020 d). Only a few stars, if any,pulsate in the fundamental mode. Our photometric results are inexcellent agreement with the spectroscopic work on high-degree nonradialpulsations by Bohlender et al. (\cite{Boh99}). Compared to the deltaScuti stars, the cool and hot borders of the instability strip of thelambda Bootis stars are shifted by about 25 mmag, towards smaller(b-y)_0. Using published abundances and the metallicity sensitiveindices of the Geneva 7-colour and Strömgren uvbybeta systems, wehave derived [Z] values which describe the surface abundance of theheavier elements for the group members. We find that thePeriod-Luminosity-Colour relation for the group of lambda Bootis starsis within the errors identical with that of the normal delta Scutistars. No clear evidence for a statistically significant metallicityterm was detected. A study of correlation between the oscillation amplitude and stellar parameters of delta Scutis in open clusters. Toward selection rules for delta Scuti star oscillations
In the present work, we study correlations between stellar fundamentalparameters and the oscillation amplitude for delta Scuti stars. Wepresent this study for a sample of 17 selected delta Scutis belonging to5 young open clusters. Taking advantage of properties of delta Scutis inclusters, we correct the photometric parameters of our objects for theeffects of fast rotation. We confirm the benefit of applying suchcorrections in this kind of studies. In addition, the technique used forthis correction allows us to obtain an estimate of stellar parameterssuch as the angle of inclination and the rotation rate, usually notaccessible. A significant correlation between the parameteri'(estimation of the angle of inclination of the star) andthe oscillation amplitude is found. A discussion and interpretation ofthese a priori surprising results is proposed, in terms of a possibleselection rule for oscillation modes of delta Scuti stars.

Astrometric radial velocities. III. Hipparcos measurements of nearby star clusters and associations
Radial motions of stars in nearby moving clusters are determined fromaccurate proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes, without any use ofspectroscopy. Assuming that cluster members share the same velocityvector (apart from a random dispersion), we apply a maximum-likelihoodmethod on astrometric data from Hipparcos to compute radial and spacevelocities (and their dispersions) in the Ursa Major, Hyades, ComaBerenices, Pleiades, and Praesepe clusters, and for theScorpius-Centaurus, alpha Persei, and ``HIP 98321'' associations. Theradial motion of the Hyades cluster is determined to within 0.4 kms-1 (standard error), and that of its individual stars towithin 0.6 km s-1. For other clusters, Hipparcos data yieldastrometric radial velocities with typical accuracies of a few kms-1. A comparison of these astrometric values withspectroscopic radial velocities in the literature shows a good generalagreement and, in the case of the best-determined Hyades cluster, alsopermits searches for subtle astrophysical differences, such as evidencefor enhanced convective blueshifts of F-dwarf spectra, and decreasedgravitational redshifts in giants. Similar comparisons for the ScorpiusOB2 complex indicate some expansion of its associations, albeit slowerthan expected from their ages. As a by-product from the radial-velocitysolutions, kinematically improved parallaxes for individual stars areobtained, enabling Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams with unprecedentedaccuracy in luminosity. For the Hyades (parallax accuracy 0.3 mas), itsmain sequence resembles a thin line, possibly with wiggles in it.Although this main sequence has underpopulated regions at certaincolours (previously suggested to be ``Böhm-Vitense gaps''), suchare not visible for other clusters, and are probably spurious. Futurespace astrometry missions carry a great potential for absoluteradial-velocity determinations, insensitive to the complexities ofstellar spectra. A revised catalogue of delta Sct stars
An extensive and up-dated list of delta Sct stars is presented here.More than 500 papers, published during the last few years, have beenrevised and 341 new variables have been added to our last list, sixyears ago. This catalogue is intended to be a comprehensive review onthe observational characteristics of all the delta Sct stars known untilnow, including stars contained in earlier catalogues together with othernew discovered variables, covering information published until January2000. In summary, 636 variables, 1149 references and 182 individualnotes are presented in this new list. Photometric parameters for rotating models of A- and F-type stars
We have computed the photometric magnitudes of rotatingatmospheres-based on the simple model of Collins-for a grid suitable formain-sequence and slightly evolved stars of spectral type A0 to F5. Agravity-darkening law valid for radiative and convective envelopes hasbeen considered. The general results are given as magnitude differencesbetween rotating and non-rotating copartners to allow for the use of anyphotometric calibration. A simple interpolation on these results givesthe photometric parameters for interior rotating models but we alsoindicate how they can be used to correct for the effect of rotation whenan investigation with non-rotating models is carried out. We illustratethe procedure with the interesting case of the Praesepe Cluster.

Open clusters with Hipparcos. I. Mean astrometric parameters
New memberships, mean parallaxes and proper motions of all 9 openclusters closer than 300 pc (except the Hyades) and 9rich clusters between 300 and 500 pc have been computed using Hipparcosdata. Precisions, ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 mas for parallaxes and 0.1 to0.5 mas/yr for proper motions, are of great interest for calibratingphotometric parallaxes as well as for kinematical studies. Carefulinvestigations of possible biases have been performed and no evidence ofsignificant systematic errors on the mean cluster parallaxes has beenfound. The distances and proper motions of 32 more distant clusters,which may be used statistically, are also indicated. Based onobservations made with the ESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite

Amplitude investigation of delta Scuti variables in open clusters
We report here the results of a statistical analysis of 28 delta Scutistars from five open clusters, alpha Persei, Pleiades, Hyades, Praesepeand Coma. These delta Scuti variables, most of which are on the mainsequence, tend to show a positive correlation between oscillationamplitude and absolute luminosity. No correlation is found betweenamplitude and effective temperature.

Photoelectric photometry and period analysis of selected Delta Scuti stars in Praesepe
Photoelectric photometry of seven Delta Scuti stars in Praesepe wassecured. Three of them were observed simultaneously at observatorieslocated at different longitudes. Period analysis has been carried outfor each star with different computing packages and the results comparedto those in the literature. Their physical characteristics have beendetermined from the Stroemgren photometry and theoretical and empiricalcalibrations. Evolution of mass segregation in open clusters: some observational evidences
On the basis of the best available member list and duplicityinformation, we have studied the radial structure of Praesepe and of thevery young open cluster NGC 6231. We have found mass segregation amongthe cluster members and between binaries and single stars, which isexplained by the greater average mass of the multiple systems. However,the degree of mass segregation for stars between 1.5 and 2.3 M_sun isless pronounced in Praesepe than in the Pleiades. Furthermore, masssegregation is already present in the very young open cluster NGC 6231although this cluster is likely still not dynamically relaxed. Wediscuss the implications of these results and propose a qualitativescenario for the evolution of mass segregation in open clusters. InPraesepe the mass function of single stars and primaries appears to besignificantly different, like in the Pleiades. We observe an absence ofellipticity of the outer part of Praesepe. Luminosity and related parameters of δ Scuti stars from HIPPARCOS parallaxes. General properties of luminosity.
The absolute magnitudes of δ Scuti stars derived from parallaxesmeasured by the Hipparcos astrometric satellite are discussed andcompared with the previous estimates based on photometric uvbyβindices. There are significant differences which are related tophotometric effects of metallicity and rotational velocity, but thepossible effect of a close companion on the measured apparent magnitudeshould be also taken into account. The possibility of differentgroupings of δ Scuti stars based on the absolute magnitudes isbriefly discussed. Some high amplitude δ Scuti stars withintermediate or normal metallicity and small and uncertain parallax haveapparently a very low luminosity; this could be a systematic effectrelated to the observational errors.

High-precision study of proper motions and membership of 924 stars in the central region of Praesepe.
High-precision proper motions for 257 and 296 stars in a 90'x90' regioncentered on BD+20 2170 were obtained from seven plates taken with the40cm refractor (f=6895mm) at Zo-Se station of Shanghai Observatory withsix AC plates and the stellar positions in Russell's (1976) catalogue,respectively. Combining with the data given by Klein-Wassink (1927),Jones (1971), Artyukhina (1971), and Jones & Cudworth (1983), theseproper motions give a sample of 924 stars in the region mentioned above.With membership probabilities estimated by an improved maximumlikelihood method, a very good sample of 198 members is obtained withproper motion accuracies ranging from +/-0.2 to +/-5.0mas/yr, of which60 per cent are better than +/-1.0mas/yr, and the completeness nearlydown to B=15.5.

A catalogue of variable stars in the lower instability strip.
Identifications, positions, photometry, spectra, some pulsationalfeatures, other astrophysical parameters and literature for 302pulsating variable stars in the lower instability strip, near the ZAMS,are given. About 185 stars have near homogeneous photometric informationin the Stroemgren's uvby-β photometric system. Thiscatalogue/database covers information published until November 1993.

Post-main-sequence and POST red giant branch variables with pulsation periods less than one day
Post-main-sequence (mass 1 to 3 solar masses) and post-giant branch (0.5to 1 solar mass) pulsators are discussed on the basis of four color andH beta light curves published elsewhere. The post-main-sequencevariables, called ultrashort period cepheid (USPC) (delta Sct), pulsatein the fundamental and first harmonic modes of radial pulsation and, inmany cases, in nonradial modes. The variables for which photometryallows accurate, luminosity estimates and are known to pulsatesimultaneously in the fundamental and first harmonic or in thefundamental mode alone, define a PL relation (MV = -2.80 logP - 0.60, fundamental). It is notable that the slope of this relation isin the range of slopes found for classical cepheids. Accurate Vphotometry is lacking for many of the variables known as 'anomalouscepheids', but the available data divide them into low mass,pseudocepheids (BL Her and W Vir stars) and post-main-sequence USPC(delta Sct) variables. Four USPC in NGC 5053 and six in NGC 6466, forwhich accurate photometry is available, give remarkably consistentmoduli of 16.06 +/- 0.05 and 15.98 +/- 0.08 mag, respectively, for theclusters, in which they are blue stragglers similar to SX Phe inKapteyn's star group. The assumption that the four post-giant branchvariables, called VSPC (RR Lyr), S Ari, SU Dra, and ST Leo in Kapteyn'sstar group and RR Lyr in the Groombridge 1830 group, are physicalmembers of these groups and share their V-velocities, leads to acalibration of the photometry for the derivation of reddening,luminosity, and heavy element abundance of 45 field variables. Theresulting reddenings are consistent with values obtained by othermethods and the metallicities are consistent with the most accuratelyavailable spectroscopic determinations of delta S and of Ca II K. Theluminosities of the bulk of the variables confirm Sandage's (1993)relation between MV and (Fe/H). Four or five of the fieldvariables are probably binary, including BB Vir which Kinman &Carreta (1992) have independently noted as double. The PL relation forUSPC (delta Sct) variables intersects the horizontal branch (HB) near P= 0.3d and at least two field very short period cepheid (VSPC) (RR Lyr)star, FW Lup (0.484 d) and ST Pic (0.486 d) may be first overtonepulsators of the USPC (delta Sct) variety. A dozen field VSPC (RR Lyr)stars populate a (Fe/H), MV relation with the same slope asthe other stars but displaced 0.7 mag toward higher luminosities. Theonly cluster variable found to populate this diplaced relation is No. 9in 47 Tuc, although ST Vir, which may be a member of the Arcturus group,should also be considered. The elevated luminosities are unlikely to becaused by either evolution or errors in the photometric indices. Apossible source of these apparently young VSPC(RR Lyr) variables withhalo metallicity is in second (or third) generation globular clustersformed during an episodic collapse of the galaxy that produced metalpoor stars but in a dynamical situation that hastened the disruption ofthe clusters, currently formed, before the still older globularclusters, created under conditions that have kept them in a moredisruptive free environment.

δ Scuti stars: a new revised list
An extensive and up to date list of δ Sct stars is presented. Thiscatalogue is intended to be a comprehensive review of observationalcharacteristics of all the δ Sct stars known until now, includingstars contained in earlier catalogues together with other new discoveredvariables, covering information published until November 1993. Globalinformation in the form of histograms and diagrams are also shown.

Ages and masses of Delta Scuti stars in the Praesepe cluster
The study derives physical parameters and radial pulsation modes forthree Delta Scuti stars in the Praesepe cluster: HD 73345, HD 73712, andHD 73746. Their ages and evolutionary masses are interpolated in thetrack systems of Iben (1967) and Paczynski (1970). These age estimatesare combined with previous results for nine other Delta Scuti stars inthe Praesepe cluster to obtain the following mean age estimates of thiscluster: (14.2 +/- 1.3) x 10 exp 8 yr and (5.4 +/- 0.4) x 10 exp 8 yr.Age and evolutionary mass estimates of the 12 cluster variables are alsoobtained in the modern track system of Maeder and Meynet (1988), inwhich the weighted mean cluster age is (15.3 +/- 1.0) x 10 exp 8 yr.

ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. IX - A duplicity survey of the Pleiades, Praesepe, and IC 4665 clusters
Multiplicity of stars within clusters is a well-studied phenomenon.However, recent survey work done on the Hyades by Mason et al. (1993)would seem to indicate that even in the most often studied clusters,there may be binaries yet undiscovered. In order to expand the sample ofcluster binaries with potentially short-period visual orbits, a specklesurvey of 45 Pleiades, 54 Praesepe, and 22 IC 4665 bright stars (V isless than 10) for possible multiplicity was conducted at the KPNO 4 mMayall telescope between 1987 October and 1991 November. Of these, threenew binaries have been discovered: one in the Pleiades where the newcomponent may be spectroscopic, another in Praesepe which has beenconfirmed from examinations of archival observations and also has beenresolved by occultation, and the third in IC 4665. Continued study ofthese new binary stars could further refine the cluster distance modulias well as the cluster mass-luminosity relations.

Washington photometry of open cluster giants - Nine old disk clusters in the third Galactic quadrant
Washington photoelectric photometry for 136 stars in nine old openclusters is presented and used to determine the luminosity class, T(e),and metallicity. The virtually unstudied cluster NGC 2324 is found tohave a metallicity one tenth that of the sun, as is the cluster NGC 2660for which previous estimates have ranged from about +0.1 to -0.5. Athird cluster, NGC 3960, with a Galactocentric distance of only 8 kpc,is found to have a metallicity of -0.7, also substantially lower thanpublished values. Such clusters indicate that substantial scatteractually exists in the tight relation found by Friel and Janes (1992)between the metallicity of an open cluster and its currentGalactocentric distance. Outer disk clusters have a metallicity at agiven age that is much more like that of the LMC counterparts than thatof solar neighborhood disk field stars or clusters.

The Hyades supercluster in the FK5
The members of the Hyades supercluster brighter than about M(V) = + 4mag and contained in the FK5, or having nearly FK5 quality propermotions, show a convergent point of (A,D) = (6h, + 6.5 deg). The Hyadescluster stars in the FK5 have a mean distance of 46.7 pc. Thesupercluster, as well as the Hyades and Praesepe cluster, populationsrepresent at least three age groups. Standard models indicate ages of 3to 4, 6, and 8 x 10 exp 8 yr, whereas model ages with convectiveovershoot are nearly twice this. Most of the Am and USPC stars in thesupercluster are of the same age. The Ap stars mark the onset of shellhydrogen burning. The photometry of the red giants confirms the agespread and indicates a weakening of CN strength with age. Attention iscalled to the need for further study of NGC 2423 as an effectiveprolusion to understanding the evolution of the supercluster.

J 2000.0 positions and proper motions of 257 stars in the central part of the Praesepe astrometric standard region
Data are presented on the J2000.0 positions and proper motions of 257stars in the central 1.5 deg x 1.5 deg area of the Praesepe astrometricstandard region. These data obtained with accuracies of 0.005-0.10arcsec for the positions in each direction and 0.0002-0.006 arcsec/yrfor the proper motions in each direction. The list includes stars forwhich proper motions were not given in the Russell (1976) catalog.

Empirical P-L-C relation for Delta Scuti stars - A catalogue
An extensive and up-to-date list of 192 Delta Scuti stars is presented.Empirical period - luminosity - color (P-L-C) relations are obtained forthe four lowest modes corresponding to radial pulsations. Agreement withpredicted values indicates that, in general, both Stroemgren photometriccalibration and pulsation theory work well for these stars.

The late A-type stars - Refined MK classification, confrontation with Stromgren photometry, and the effects of rotation
The MK spectral classification for late A-type stars is refined and theeffects of rotation of spectral classification and uvby(beta) photometryfor these stars are examined. It is found that, for A3 stars, the4417/4481 A wavelength ratio produces results that are inconsistent withthe Stark broadening of the H lines. It is suggested that this ratio isnot useful as a luminosity criterion at any spectral type.Self-consistent sequences of narrow- and broadline standards areestablished. The results of the refined classification system arecompared with Stromgren photometry, showing a set of low-v sin i A-typestars with anomalously large delta(c1) indices for theirluminosity types. It is proposed that these stars are rapid rotatorsseen at fairly low inclination angles.

Population-I Pulsating Stars. VI - Ages of Star Clusters and Associations
On the basis of our age estimations of Population I pulsating stars inour Galaxy (Tsvetkov, 1986a), the mean ages of 6 open star clusterscontaining 21 Delta Scuti-variables and of 8 star clusters andassociations containing 13 classical cepheids, have been evaluated.These mean cluster age estimations weighted according to theprobabilities for different evolutionary phases of the pulsating stars,are obtained in the evolutionary track systems of Iben (1967) andPaczyñski (1970); the cluster ages are larger in theformer system. Our results are compared with those obtained from variousmethods by other authors. Clusters with classical cepheids and withDelta Scuti-stars have ages, respectively, in the ranges 107_108 yearsand 106_109 years. It is shown that the use of simpleperiod-age(-colour) relations for Population I pulsating stars givessufficiently accurate cluster age estimations. By use of our period-agerelations for classical cepheids (Tsvetkov, 1986a), the mean ages of 56other star clusters and associations in our Galaxy, the MagellanicClouds, and M 31 galaxy have been estimated in both systems of tracks.The results are generally in agreement with those obtained from variousmethods by other authors. The use of Population I pulsating stars instar clusters and associations is one of the simplest and most easilyapplied methods for determining cluster ages; but there are somelimitations in its application

Quasi-160-minute oscillation period of Delta Scuti stars
The resonance power spectrum (or commensurability spectrum) computed for217 Delta Scuti stars indicates that the dominant (most commensurate)period for the total set of oscillation periods of these stars is 162.2+ or - 2.8 min. Within the error limits, this period coincidesapproximately with the 160-min period of global oscillations of the sun.

MK classification of the brighter praesepe stars
MK classifications have been obtained for the 42 brightest stars in therich open cluster Praesepe. In the H-R diagram, 10 of the 12 starsbrighter than V = 7.0 mag have luminosity classes brighter than V or areAm stars. Only two of the stars fainter than V = 7.0 mag are ofluminosity class IV. The nine Am stars discovered by Bidelman (1956) areconfirmed. The frequency of these among the late A stars is consistentwith results for field stars, but there is only one Ap star. The reasonsfor that deficiency are discussed.

Population I pulsating stars. III - Period-Evolutionary mass(-colour) relations
Evolutionary masses of Population I pulsating stars (89 Delta Scutivariables and 155 classical Cepheids are investigated in Iben's andPaczynski's systems of tracks. The evolutionary masses are larger in thelatter system than in the former. The uncertainty of the evolutionarymass of a star is estimated, when various evolutionary phases arepossible for this star (a smaller evolutionary mass corresponds to alater phase). Semi-empirical period-evolutionary mass-color (P-Me-C) andperiod-evolutionary mass (P-Me) relations are derived for various modes,groups of stars, color indices (and effective temperature), andevolutionary phases. For Delta Scuti stars, the uncertainty ofevolutionary masses calculated from the P-Me relations for differentmodes, is estimated. The improvement of the evolutionary mass accuracyis estimated, when a P-Me-C relation is used instead of thecorresponding P-Me relation. The theoretical and semi-empirical periodratios of radial pulsations derived from the P-Me relations for DeltaScuti stars, are compared. There is relatively good agreement betweenthe P-Me relations for the two types of Population I pulsating stars,but a 'gap' exists between them.

Population I pulsating stars. II - Period-age (-colour) relations
Ages corresponding to various evolutionary phases of population Ipulsating stars (89 Delta Scuti variables and 155 classical cepheids)are interpolated in the evolutionary track systems of Iben (1967) andPaczynski (1970). The stellar ages are considerably less in the lattersystem than in the former one. The undertainty of the age of a star isestimated when various evolutionary phases are possible for this star (agreater age corresponds to a later phase). Semiempiricalperiod-age-color (P-t-C) and period-age (P-1) relations are derived forvarious modes, groups of stars, color indices (and effectivetemperature), and evolutionary phases. For Delta Scuti stars, theuncertainty of ages calculated from the P-t relations for differentmodes, is estimated. Theoretical P-t-C and P-t relations for Delta Scutistars are obtained and compared with semiempirical relations (such acomparison of P-t relations is performed for classical cepheids too).The improvement of the age accuracy is estimated when a P-t-C relationis used instead of the corresponding P-t relation. The theoretical andsemiempirical period ratios of radial pulsations, derived from the P-trelations for Delta Scuti stars, are compared. There is relatively goodagreement between the P-t relations for the two types of population Ipulsating stars, but a 'gap' exists between them.

Metallicism among A and F giant stars
132 stars considered as A and F giants have been studied for theirproperties in the Geneva photometric system. It is shown that thissystem to derive the temperature, absolute magnitude and Fe/H value forstars in this part of the HR diagram. 36 percent of the stars of oursample exhibit an enhanced value Delta m2 that can be interpreted interms of Fe/H. The red limit of stars having an enhanced Fe/H value is0.225 in B2-V1 or 6500 K in Teff. This corresponds to the limit definedby Vauclair and Vauclair (1982) where the diffusion timescale is equalto the stellar lifetime and permits the assumption that the diffusion isthe process responsible for the metallicism observed in the A and Fgiants.

Radial pulsation modes as a possible cause for the heterogeneity of the Delta Scuti stars
On the basis of observational data (Breger, 1979), a radial pulsationmode of 83 Delta Scuti stars is estimated in two ways. These stars canpulsate in four lowest modes - F, 1H, 2H, 3H - and, perhaps, in 4H and5H. An earlier suggestion that the apparent heterogeneity of theseobjects in both the period luminosity plane and the period-frequencydistribution may be explained by means of pulsations in various modes -is confirmed.
