Distance determination for RAVE stars using stellar models
Aims: We develop a method for deriving distances fromspectroscopic data and obtaining full 6D phase-space coordinates for theRAVE survey's second data release. Methods: We used stellarmodels combined with atmospheric properties from RAVE (effectivetemperature, surface gravity and metallicity) and (J-Ks)photometry from archival sources to derive absolute magnitudes. Incombination with apparent magnitudes, sky coordinates, proper motionsfrom a variety of sources and radial velocities from RAVE, we are ableto derive the full 6D phase-space coordinates for a large sample of RAVEstars. This method is tested with artificial data, Hipparcostrigonometric parallaxes and observations of the open cluster M 67. Results: When we applied our method to a set of 16 146 stars, wefound that 25% (4037) of the stars have relative (statistical) distanceerrors of <35%, while 50% (8073) and 75% (12 110) have relative(statistical) errors smaller than 45% and 50%, respectively. Our varioustests show that we can reliably estimate distances for main-sequencestars, but there is an indication of potential systematic problems withgiant stars owing to uncertainties in the underlying stellar models. Forthe main-sequence star sample (defined as those with log(g) > 4), 25%(1744) have relative distance errors <31%, while 50% (3488) and 75%(5231) have relative errors smaller than 36% and 42%, respectively. Ourfull dataset shows the expected decrease in the metallicity of stars asa function of distance from the Galactic plane. The known kinematicsubstructures in the U and V velocity components of nearby dwarf starsare apparent in our dataset, confirming the accuracy of our data and thereliability of our technique. We provide independent measurements of theorientation of the UV velocity ellipsoid and of the solar motion, andthey are in very good agreement with previous work. Conclusions:The distance catalogue for the RAVE second data release is available athttp://www.astro.rug.nl/~rave,and will be updated in the future to include new data releases.

The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue: 16 <=BMGC < 24 galaxy counts and the calibration of the local galaxy luminosity function
The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue (MGC) is a 37.5 deg2,medium-deep, B-band imaging survey along the celestial equator, takenwith the Wide Field Camera on the Isaac Newton Telescope. The surveyregion is contained within the regions of both the Two Degree FieldGalaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey EarlyData Release (SDSS-EDR). The survey has a uniform isophotal detectionlimit of 26 mag arcsec-2 and it provides a robust,well-defined catalogue of stars and galaxies in the range 16<=BMGC < 24 mag. Here we describe the survey strategy, the photometric and astrometriccalibration, source detection and analysis, and present the galaxynumber counts that connect the bright and faint galaxy populationswithin a single survey. We argue that these counts represent the stateof the art and use them to constrain the normalizations (φ*) of anumber of recent estimates of the local galaxy luminosity function. Wefind that the 2dFGRS, SDSS Commissioning Data (CD), ESO Slice Project,Century Survey, Durham/UKST, Mt Stromlo/APM, SSRS2 and NOG luminosityfunctions require a revision of their published φ* values by factorsof 1.05 +/- 0.05, 0.76 +/- 0.10, 1.02 +/- 0.22, 1.02 +/- 0.16, 1.16 +/-0.28, 1.75 +/- 0.37, 1.40 +/- 0.26 and 1.01 +/- 0.39, respectively. After renormalizing the galaxy luminosity functions we find a mean localbJ luminosity density of .1

Speckle interferometry of HIPPARCOS link stars. II
A second list is presented of stars that have been tested for theirsuitability as astrometric links between the Hipparcos satellite and theSpace Telescope. A speckle interferometer and autocorrelator were used, first on the 1.9-m telescope of the Mt. Stromlo and Siding SpringObservatories, and then, after discarding 16 stars showing evidence of abinary nature, on the Anglo-Australian 3.9-m telescope. Results aregiven for 123 stars. Combining the present list with the 1984 list, itis estimated that 29 percent of the original selection of 'cleanlooking' stars (on sky survey prints) are expected to be multiple at theresolution of the 3.9-m telescope, 0.03-0.7 arcsec.
