Nearby Young Stars Selected by Proper Motion. I. Four New Members of the β Pictoris Moving Group From The Tycho-2 Catalog
We describe a procedure to identify stars from nearby moving groups andassociations out of catalogs of stars with large proper motions. We showthat from the mean motion vector of a known or suspected moving group,one can identify additional members of the group based on proper motiondata and photometry in the optical and infrared, with minimalcontamination from background field stars. We demonstrate this techniqueby conducting a search for low-mass members of the β Pictorismoving group in the Tycho-2 catalog. All known members of the movinggroup are easily recovered, and a list of 51 possible candidates isgenerated. Moving group membership is evaluated for 33 candidates basedon X-ray flux from ROSAT, Hα line emission, and radial velocitymeasurement from high-resolution infrared spectra obtained at InfraredTelescope Facility. We confirm three of the candidates to be new membersof the group: TYC 1186-706-1, TYC 7443-1102-1, and TYC 2211-1309-1 whichare late-K and early-M dwarfs 45-60 pc from the Sun. We also identify acommon proper motion companion to the known β Pictoris Moving Groupmember TYC 7443-1102-1, at a 26farcs3 separation; the new companion isassociated with the X-ray source 1RXS J195602.8 – 320720. We arguethat the present technique could be applied to other large proper motioncatalogs to identify most of the elusive, low-mass members of knownnearby moving groups and associations.Based on data obtained in part with the 2.4 m Hiltner telescope of theMDM observatory. Based on data obtained in part with the CTIO 1.5 mtelescope, operated by SMARTS, the Small and Medium Aperture TelescopeSystem consortium, under contract with the Associated Universities forResearch in Astronomy (AURA).

Proper-motion binaries in the Hipparcos catalogue. Comparison with radial velocity data
Context: .This paper is the last in a series devoted to the analysis ofthe binary content of the Hipparcos Catalogue. Aims: .Thecomparison of the proper motions constructed from positions spanning ashort (Hipparcos) or long time (Tycho-2) makes it possible to uncoverbinaries with periods of the order of or somewhat larger than the shorttime span (in this case, the 3 yr duration of the Hipparcos mission),since the unrecognised orbital motion will then add to the propermotion. Methods: .A list of candidate proper motion binaries isconstructed from a carefully designed χ2 test evaluatingthe statistical significance of the difference between the Tycho-2 andHipparcos proper motions for 103 134 stars in common between the twocatalogues (excluding components of visual systems). Since similar listsof proper-motion binaries have already been constructed, the presentpaper focuses on the evaluation of the detection efficiency ofproper-motion binaries, using different kinds of control data (mostlyradial velocities). The detection rate for entries from the NinthCatalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits (S_B^9) is evaluated, as wellas for stars like barium stars, which are known to be all binaries, andfinally for spectroscopic binaries identified from radial velocity datain the Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs in the solarneighbourhood. Results: .Proper motion binaries are efficientlydetected for systems with parallaxes in excess of ~20 mas, and periodsin the range 1000-30 000 d. The shortest periods in this range(1000-2000 d, i.e., once to twice the duration of the Hipparcos mission)may appear only as DMSA/G binaries (accelerated proper motion in theHipparcos Double and Multiple System Annex). Proper motion binariesdetected among S_B9 systems having periods shorter than about400 d hint at triple systems, the proper-motion binary involving acomponent with a longer orbital period. A list of 19 candidate triplesystems is provided. Binaries suspected of having low-mass(brown-dwarf-like) companions are listed as well. Among the 37 bariumstars with parallaxes larger than 5 mas, only 7 exhibit no evidence forduplicity whatsoever (be it spectroscopic or astrometric). Statistical Constraints for Astrometric Binaries with Nonlinear Motion
Useful constraints on the orbits and mass ratios of astrometric binariesin the Hipparcos catalog are derived from the measured proper motiondifferences of Hipparcos and Tycho-2 (Δμ), accelerations ofproper motions (μ˙), and second derivatives of proper motions(μ̈). It is shown how, in some cases, statistical bounds can beestimated for the masses of the secondary components. Two catalogs ofastrometric binaries are generated, one of binaries with significantproper motion differences and the other of binaries with significantaccelerations of their proper motions. Mathematical relations betweenthe astrometric observables Δμ, μ˙, and μ̈ andthe orbital elements are derived in the appendices. We find a remarkabledifference between the distribution of spectral types of stars withlarge accelerations but small proper motion differences and that ofstars with large proper motion differences but insignificantaccelerations. The spectral type distribution for the former sample ofbinaries is the same as the general distribution of all stars in theHipparcos catalog, whereas the latter sample is clearly dominated bysolar-type stars, with an obvious dearth of blue stars. We point outthat the latter set includes mostly binaries with long periods (longerthan about 6 yr).

The evolutionary status of activity-selected solar-type stars and of T Tauri stars as derived from HIPPARCOS parallaxes: evidence for long-lived T Tauri disks?
We have used the Hipparcos parallaxes to study the evolutionary statusof a sample of stars with spectral types from late F to M0 (hereafter``solar-type stars''), selected on the basis of their activity, mainlyfrom Einstein-based surveys. The parallaxes have been used to place theobjects in the H-R diagram, determining their age by comparison withtheoretical evolutionary tracks and observational main sequences. Thisage is compared with age estimates derived from the lithium abundance,the activity level and the presence of circumstellar disks. Tocomplement our sample at the young end we have also studied theHipparcos-determined distances of a sample of optically-selectedpre-main sequence stars, mostly classical T Tauri stars (CTTS). SomeCTTS appear to be much nearer to us than previously determined, and faraway from their putative parent cloud. This implies a significantlylarger age providing observational evidence for the existence oflong-lived T Tauri disks which could produce slow rotators on theZero-Age Main Sequence (ZAMS). None of the above-mentioned age proxiesappears to reliably and unambiguously select very young stars in therange of spectral types considered here, with some apparently very youngobjects effectively lying onto or very close to the main sequence. Theattribution of ages to young solar-type stars on the basis of any of thestandard proxies may thus significantly under- or over-estimate theevolutionary age of the object. Caution must therefore be exercised whenattributing ages to individual stars, and claims about the large numberof PMS stars found in X-ray based surveys may need to be at least inpart reconsidered in this light. HIPPARCOS distances of X-ray selected stars: implications on their nature as stellar population.
We present the parallaxes, measured by Hipparcos, for a sample of X-rayselected stars. The stars belong to the stellar sample of the EinsteinExtended Medium Sensitivity Survey. They are all at galactic latitude|b|>20deg, and are generally far away from known star formingregions. Several of these stars show lithium abundance and activitylevel typical of very young stars with ages comparable to that of thePleiades. We show that the majority of our sample stars are on the mainsequence, with only =~20% being giants. We do not find a significantpresence of pre-main sequence stars in our sample, notwithstanding thefact that some of our stars have a considerable lithium abundance,showing that the stars observed are most likely young and activemain-sequence objects.

An H-alpha survey of neglected Vyssotsky Catalog stars
Consideration is given to a significant number of Vyssotsky K- andM-dwarfs that have either no published radial velocity (71 stars), or avelocity based on a single measure (22), or with an uncertaintly greaterthan 5 km/s (19). An 'in flare' observation of Vys 250A compared to itsquiescent state, and an example of the double-lined phase of Vys 250Bare illustrated. Mean values from the observations are given in tabularform.

Additional Emission-Line Candidates From the HK Survey
We present a list of 218 additional candidate emission-line objectsdiscovered with the northern and southern HKinterference-filter/objective prism survey of Beers and collaborators.The objects have apparent magnitudes in the range 10 <= B <= 16,several magnitudes fainter than obtained with previous prism surveys ofsimilar resolution. Of the new candidates, 73 have been previouslyidentified. The total list of HK- survey emission-line candidates nownumbers 376 objects, 104 of which were noted by previous surveys.

An updated version of my catalogue of radio stars is presented. Somestatistics and availability are discussed.

Photometry of dwarf K and M stars
An observational program using UBVRI photometry is presented for 688stars from among the dwarf K and M stars already found spectroscopicallyby Vyssotsky (1958). Of these, 211 have not been observedphotometrically. These observations were obtained over a period ofseveral years at the Kitt Peak National Observatory using a GaAsphotomultiplier with an 0.9 m reflector. Based on night-to-nightvariations in the measures of individual stars, the internal errors maybe estimated to be roughly 0.01 mag for the colors and 0.015 for the Vmagnitudes. The photometric parallaxes reported for each star werecomputed in the manner discussed by Weis (1986).

The Einstein Observatory Extended Medium-Sensitivity Survey. II - The optical identifications
The optical identifications are presented of the Einstein ExtendedMedium-Sensitivity Survey (EMSS), including the methodology used tooptically identify the EMSS sources and the uncertainties involved withthat process. The optical properties of the classes of X-ray, optical,and radio data for each of the identified and, as yet, unidentifiedsources of the survey are described. A new class of X-ray emitters,cooling flow galaxies, is proposed. The criteria used to determinewhether the proposed optical counterpart to the X-ray source is aplausible identification are described. Plausibility is based on theoptical classification of the counterpart, e.g., AGN, cluster, G star,and the X-ray-to-optical flux ratios previously observed for theseclasses of X-ray emitters. Two independent schemes of opticalclassification of the counterparts are used to check the plausibility ofthese identifications; one is based on moderate-resolution opticalspectroscopy, and the other, on inferred X-ray luminosity and theoverall energy distribution.

The M-dwarf contribution to the diffuse soft X-ray background revisited
The M-dwarf contribution to the soft X-ray background has beenredetermined using new optical photometry for a previous sample of Mdwarfs and additional Einstein X-ray survey data. The result, which isobtained from a sample area more than double the size of that previouslyused, is a conservative upper limit: M dwarfs contribute less than 10percent to the soft XRB. This limit is consistent with that obtained ina similar X-ray-selected sample analysis by Caillault et al. (1986) andis more than a factor of two less than the estimate obtained by Rosneret al. (1981) from an optically selected sample of stars.

The Einstein Observatory Extended Medium-Sensitivity Survey. I - X-ray data and analysis
This paper presents the results of the analysis of the X-ray data andthe optical identification for the Einstein Observatory ExtendedMedium-Sensitivity Survey (EMSS). The survey consists of 835serendipitous sources detected at or above 4 times the rms level in 1435imaging proportional counter fields with centers located away from theGalactic plane. Their limiting sensitivities are about (5-300) x 10 tothe -14th ergs/sq cm sec in the 0.3-3.5-keV energy band. A total area of778 square deg of the high-Galactic-latitude sky has been covered. Thedata have been analyzed using the REV1 processing system, which takesinto account the nonuniformities of the detector. The resulting EMSScatalog of X-ray sources is a flux-limited and homogeneous sample ofastronomical objects that can be used for statistical studies.

The relation between X-ray emission and rotation in late-type stars from the perspective of X-ray selection
An X-ray-selected sample of 128 late-type (F-M) stars analyzed. Thesestars were identified as optical counterparts to serendipitous X-raydetections made by the Einstein Observatory Extended Medium SensitivitySurvey. Once identified as X-ray sources, the sample was followed up byan extensive program of optical observations, including high-resolutionand low-resolution spectroscopy and photometry. Spectral types,luminosity classes, distances, X-ray luminosities, projected rotationrates (v sin i), radial velocities, and binary status have beendetermined for the sample.

H-alpha photometry of dwarf K and M stars - Chromospheric activity
H-alpha photometry of 118 K and M dwarfs are presented, with H-alphaequivalent width measures accurate to about 0.05 A. The data arecombined with the spectroscopic surveys of Stauffer and Hartmann (1986)and Fleming et al. (1988) to study the main features of thechromospheric activity versus mass relation for low-mass stars. An upperbound to the H-alpha equivalent width is found to be a function of themass relation (R-I). H-alpha luminosities and surface fluxes arecalculated for active stars, showing that both quantities generallydecline with R-I. The upper bound to the fraction of a star's bolometricluminosity, however, is independent of R-I. The results suggest that thechromospheres of most dMe stars with R-I less than 1.1 are in anactivity-saturated state. Also, H-alpha variability, probably due toflares, is detected in several stars.

M dwarfs from the Einstein extended medium sensitivity survey
A complete sample of X-ray selected M dwarfs are presented which wereserendipitously detected in the extended Einstein Observatory MediumSensitivity Survey (MSS). The MSS detected only early M dwarfs (type MOthrough M5), 84 percent of which were emission stars (i.e., type Me V).It was calculated that the X-ray luminosity function for early M dwarfswith a log Lx greater than 27.6 and, by comparison to optical luminosityfunctions, find that about 25 percent of all early M dwarfs emit X-raysat a level greater than log Lx = 27.6. This result is compared toluminosity function estimates from optically selected samples anddiscussed in light of the sample's kinematic and mean age. Alsopresented is H alpha and Ca II K line fluxes for each member of thesample and it is shown that the surface H alpha and Ca II K luminositiesdo indeed correlate with Lx. The significance of this effect to theoriesof chromospheric and coronal heating is explained.

Photometry of dwarf K and M stars
Broadband photometry in BVRI colors for 120 nearby dwarf K and M starsis presented. The apparent magnitude distributions of Vyssotsky and VanVleck stars with photometry and without photometry are studied. Therelationship between apparent and photoelectric magnitudes is analyzed.The proper motion and transverse velocity of the two star types areexamined and compared.

Dwarf K and M stars of high proper motion found in a hemispheric survey
A recently completed visual/red spectral region objective-prism surveyof more than half the sky found some 2200 dwarf K and M stars ofnegligible proper motion (Stephenson, 1986). The present paper adds the1800-odd spectroscopically identified dwarfs that did prove to havesignificant proper motions. About half of these had previous spectralclassifications of some sort, especially by Vyssotsky (1952, 1956). Forthe great majority, the present coordinates are more accurate thanprevious data. The paper includes about 50 stars with unpublishedparallaxes, likely to have parallaxes of 0.05 arcsec or more. Combiningthe present data with the first paper suggests that the number oflow-proper-motion stars in that paper was not unreasonable.
