UBV absolute CCD photometry and differential astrometry of a sample of visual double stars with A-type primaries
We present V magnitudes, (B-V) and (U-B) colours of the components of111 visual double stars and their relative position measurements rho andtheta . The primaries are of spectral class A; the angular separation isin the 2farcs5 -8arcsec range. The observations were made at the 61-cmreflector of University of Toronto Southern Observatory, Chile. Theobtained photometric results are of a moderate quality for absolutevalues (0.04() m (mag) in V and about 0.02() m in the (B-V) and (U-B)colour indices) and more precise in Delta V and Delta (U-B), Delta (B-V)(0.023() m and 0.015() m, respectively). We find that about 60% ofsecondaries are also of spectral type A; 56% of pairs have Delta (B-V)less than 0.1() m. The two-colour diagram reveals significant offset ofobjects from the curve of unreddened Main Sequence stars. Acomprehensive survey of stars in the close vicinity to the objects isalso presented. The final astrometric accuracy of ~ 0farcs01 in rho and0fdg1 in theta provides additional measurements for study of relativemotion of the components. | The HR-diagram from HIPPARCOS data. Absolute magnitudes and kinematics of BP - AP stars
The HR-diagram of about 1000 Bp - Ap stars in the solar neighbourhoodhas been constructed using astrometric data from Hipparcos satellite aswell as photometric and radial velocity data. The LM method\cite{luri95,luri96} allows the use of proper motion and radial velocitydata in addition to the trigonometric parallaxes to obtain luminositycalibrations and improved distances estimates. Six types of Bp - Apstars have been examined: He-rich, He-weak, HgMn, Si, Si+ and SrCrEu.Most Bp - Ap stars lie on the main sequence occupying the whole width ofit (about 2 mag), just like normal stars in the same range of spectraltypes. Their kinematic behaviour is typical of thin disk stars youngerthan about 1 Gyr. A few stars found to be high above the galactic planeor to have a high velocity are briefly discussed. Based on data from theESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite and photometric data collected in theGeneva system at ESO, La Silla (Chile) and at Jungfraujoch andGornergrat Observatories (Switzerland). | Close visual binaries. III - Parameters and evolutionary status
New Yale isochrones, which have been tested for accuracy by Corbally(1984), provide the means to investigate interesting visual binaries,especially those whose classifications and photometry do not match well.Various parameters are deduced for those binaries which fitted theisochrones (e.g. ages, metal abundances, luminosities of peculiarstars); various solutions are systematically developed for those whichdid not fit; and a likely status of evolution is proposed (e.g.,duplicity of the components, premain-sequence, blue straggler,horizontal branch, optical pair, data inaccuracies). Evolution aroundthe helium flash and diffusion theory are briefly considered. Theseparameters and statuses provide a wealth of new stellar data andsuggestions for further investigation.
| Close visual binaries. I - MK classifications
Each component of 170 close visual binaries has been classified with newprocedures for controlling contamination problems. These classificationsare presented and are shown to be on the MK system. Two sources of areascanner UBV photometry were compared in order to establish homogeneousphotometric as well as spectroscopic data. From a consideration ofsystematic errors in the V magnitude difference (Delta V) betweencomponents the photometry of Hurly and Warner (1983) is to be preferred.Absolute magnitudes for each binary are derived from Delta V via atested MK - M(v) map.
| Photographic observations of visual double stars
The results of photographic observations of 199 visual double stars,obtained at the Bosscha Observatory at Lembang, Indonesia, in the years1958-1975 (with one 1953 plate) are presented. The material comprises708 plates with an average of 37 images measured per plate. A shortdescription of the program is given (cf. van Albada-van Dien, 1958).
