The Calar Alto lunar occultation program: update and new results
We present an update of the lunar occultation program which is routinelycarried out in the near-IR at the Calar Alto Observatory. A total of 350events were recorded since our last report (Fors et al. 2004, A&A,419, 285). In the course of eight runs we have observed, among others,late-type giants, T-Tauri stars, and infrared sources. Noteworthy was apassage of the Moon close to the galactic center, which produced a largenumber of events during just a few hours in July 2004. Results includethe determinations of the angular diameter of RZ Ari,and the projected separations and brightness ratios for one triple and13 binary stars, almost all of which representing first time detections.Projected separations range from 0farcs09 to 0farcs007. We provide aquantitative analysis of the performance achieved in our observations interms of angular resolution and sensitivity, which reach about 0farcs003and K ≈8.5 mag, respectively. We also present a statisticaldiscussion of our sample, and in particular of the frequency ofdetection of binaries among field stars.

Observed Orbital Eccentricities
For 391 spectroscopic and visual binaries with known orbital elementsand having B0-F0 IV or V primaries, we collected the derivedeccentricities. As has been found by others, those binaries with periodsof a few days have been circularized. However, those with periods up toabout 1000 or more days show reduced eccentricities that asymptoticallyapproach a mean value of 0.5 for the longest periods. For those binarieswith periods greater than 1000 days their distribution of eccentricitiesis flat from 0 to nearly 1, indicating that in the formation of binariesthere is no preferential eccentricity. The binaries with intermediateperiods (10-100 days) lack highly eccentric orbits.

First detection of Carbon Monoxide in the Atmosphere of Uranus
Carbon monoxide has been detected for the first time in the atmosphereof Uranus, from infrared spectroscopy using ISAAC at the VLT. Thisresult provides new constraints on the planet's interior, andillustrates significant differences between the two "icy giants" Uranusand Neptune.

Tidal Effects in Binaries of Various Periods
We found in the published literature the rotational velocities for 162B0-B9.5, 152 A0-A5, and 86 A6-F0 stars, all of luminosity classes V orIV, that are in spectroscopic or visual binaries with known orbitalelements. The data show that stars in binaries with periods of less thanabout 4 days have synchronized rotational and orbital motions. Stars inbinaries with periods of more than about 500 days have the samerotational velocities as single stars. However, the primaries inbinaries with periods of between 4 and 500 days have substantiallysmaller rotational velocities than single stars, implying that they havelost one-third to two-thirds of their angular momentum, presumablybecause of tidal interactions. The angular momentum losses increase withdecreasing binary separations or periods and increase with increasingage or decreasing mass.

Discovery of the Most Lithium-rich Dwarf: Diffusion in Action
Using WIYN/Hydra observations, we report the first discovery of asuper-Li-rich dwarf, the star J37 of the Hyades-aged cluster NGC 6633.This star's gargantuan surface Li abundance of A(Li)=4.29+/-0.07[A(X)≡12+log(NX/NH)] is a factor of 10larger than the Li abundances observed in meteorites and in minimallydepleted young open cluster stars. J37 may be the smoking gun for theaction of diffusion, models of which predict the existence of strikingLi overabundances due to radiative acceleration (the ``Li peak'') in theextremely narrow Teff range of 6900-7100 K. The low-C,high-Fe, and higher Ni abundances in J37 also support the diffusionmodel, although other elemental abundances do not agree as well with themodel predictions. We have discounted other Li-enrichment scenarios(spots, asymptotic giant branch contamination, planetesimal accretion).While slow mixing seems to be the universally dominant Li-depletingmechanism during the main-sequence evolution of F, G, and K dwarfs, theF dwarf J37 illustrates that Li diffusion can occur in solar-type starsunder the right circumstances. This is paper 12 of the WIYN Open ClusterStudy (WOCS).

The Pleiades, Coma, Hyades, and Praesepe open clusters: Li, Al, Si, S, Fe, Ni, and Eu abundances compared in A stars
In the third of a series of papers on the A stars in open clusters, theComa and Hyades clusters are revisited; in the first and second papers,the Pleiades and Praesepe were respectively investigated. All thespectra were secured with the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope at highspectral resolution and high signal-to-noise ratios. Photosphericabundances have been determined for Li, Al, Si, S, Fe, Ni, and Eu frommodel atmosphere abundance analysis. All the A stars with enough-sharplines to be studied for Li were observed in the four clusters. Abundanceresults are summarized for 31 cluster members, including 21 Am, 7 normalA, and 3 early-A stars. The Am stars have very uniform Li, Al, Si, S,and Fe abundances in a large temperature range of nearly 1000 K.Compared to normal A stars, Li is significantly deficient in Am stars(by a factor of 3), Al marginally overabundant, Si, S, and Fe are thesame, Ni and Eu (with only a few results) overabundant. Those uniformabundances of Li, Al, Si, S, or Fe in Am stars involve that abundancesare little affected by the magnitude of the rotational velocity. Forboth Am and normal A samples, no abundance trend as a function of ageand/or evolution is detected in the case of Li, Al, Si, S, or Fe. Theages considered are in the range 0.8 - 7 108 years; theevolution is limited from the ZAMS to the cluster turn-off. The build-upof the chemical abundances studied, in particular the Li differentiationbetween Am and normal A stars, could have taken place very early whenthe stars arrive on the Main Sequence. The spread in lithium found forthe A stars is reminiscent of that reported in the field and one opencluster for stars of nearly the same mass and slightly evolved out ofthe Main Sequence. The Li abundance does not change as soon as the starevolves through the subgiant phase and the convection zone becomesdeeper. There are two exceptional Am stars: one, in the Hyades, isLi-deficient and the other, in Praesepe, Li-overabundant. They are noobvious circumstances that can distinguish both stars from others in thevery same region of their respective cluster sequence. In each of thefour clusters, the maximum Li abundance is found in A stars, generallyin normal A stars. The Fe abundance of both Am and normal A groups isfound to be twice the original Fe value (on the ZAMS) in each of thefour clusters, independently of their age or metallicity. It is wellestablished for the Am group and in only a narrow range of Teff for thenormal A group. This behavior is unexpected for normal A stars which arethought to have their original abundances and Fe abundance differentfrom that of Am stars. A larger normal A sample is needed to concludeanything. Our abundance results for cluster Am stars quantitativelyagree with predictions of new models coupling atomic diffusion withturbulent transport (Richer et al. \cite{richer99}). On the HIPPARCOS photometry of chemically peculiar B, A, and F stars
The Hipparcos photometry of the Chemically Peculiar main sequence B, A,and F stars is examined for variability. Some non-magnetic CP stars,Mercury-Manganese and metallic-line stars, which according to canonicalwisdom should not be variable, may be variable and are identified forfurther study. The Tokyo PMC catalog 90-93: Catalog of positions of 6649 stars observed in 1990 through 1993 with Tokyo photoelectric meridian circle
The sixth annual catalog of the Tokyo Photoelectric Meridian Circle(PMC) is presented for 6649 stars which were observed at least two timesin January 1990 through March 1993. The mean positions of the starsobserved are given in the catalog at the corresponding mean epochs ofobservations of individual stars. The coordinates of the catalog arebased on the FK5 system, and referred to the equinox and equator ofJ2000.0. The mean local deviations of the observed positions from theFK5 catalog positions are constructed for the basic FK5 stars to comparewith those of the Tokyo PMC Catalog 89 and preliminary Hipparcos resultsof H30.

A catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations: 1996 edition
A fifth Edition of the Catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations is presentedherewith. It contains 5946 determinations for 3247 stars, including 751stars in 84 associations, clusters or galaxies. The literature iscomplete up to December 1995. The 700 bibliographical referencescorrespond to [Fe/H] determinations obtained from high resolutionspectroscopic observations and detailed analyses, most of them carriedout with the help of model-atmospheres. On the nature of the AM phenomenon or on a stabilization and the tidal mixing in binaries. II. Metallicity and pseudo-synchronization.
We reveal sufficient evidences that for Am binaries the metallicitymight depend on their orbital periods, P_orb_, rather than on vsini. Inparticular, δm_1_ index seems to decrease with increasing orbitalperiod up to at least P_orb_=~50d, probably even up to P_orb_=~200d.This gives further support to our "tidal mixing + stabilization"hypothesis formulated in Part I. Moreover, while the most metallic Amstars seem to have rather large periods the slowest rotators are foundto exhibit substantially shorter P_orb_. A questioning eye is thus caston the generally adopted view that Am peculiarity is caused by asuppressed rotationally induced mixing in slowly rotating `single'stars. The observed anticorrelation between rotation and metallicity mayhave also other than the `textbook' explanation, namely being the resultof the correlation between metallicity and orbital period, as themajority of Am binaries are possibly synchronized. We further argue thatthere is a tendency in Am binaries towards pseudo-synchronization up toP_orb_=~35d. This has, however, no serious impact on our conclusionsfrom Part I; on the contrary, they still hold even if this effect istaken into account.

On the nature of the AM phenomenon or on a stabilization and the tidal mixing in binaries. I. Orbital periods and rotation.
The paper casts a questioning eye on the unique role of the diffusiveparticle transport mechanism in explaining the Am phenomenon and arguesthat the so-called tidal effects might be of great importance incontrolling diffusion processes. A short period cutoff at =~1.2d as wellas a 180-800d gap were found in the orbital period distribution (OPD) ofAm binaries. The existence of the former can be ascribed to the state ofthe primaries with the almost-filled Roche lobes. The latter couldresult from the combined effects of the diffusion, tidal mixing andstabilization processes. Because the tidal mixing might surpassdiffusion in the binaries with the orbital periods P_orb_ less thanseveral hundred days and might thus sustain the He convection zone,which would otherwise disappear, no Am stars should lie below thisboundary. The fact that they are nevertheless seen there implies theexistence of some stabilization mechanism (as, e.g., that recentlyproposed by Tassoul & Tassoul 1992) for the binaries with orbitalperiods less than 180d. Further evidence is given to the fact that theOPD for the Am and the normal binaries with an A4-F1 primary arecomplementary to each other, from which it stems that Am stars are closeto the main sequence. There are, however, indications that they haveslightly larger radii (2.1-3 Rsun_) than expected for theirspectral type. The generally accepted rotational velocity cutoff at=~100km/s is shown to be of little value when applied on Am binaries ashere it is not a single quantity but, in fact, a function of P_orb_whose shape is strikingly similar to that of the curves of constantmetallicity as ascertained from observations. This also leads to thewell known overlap in rotational velocities of the normal and Am starsfor 402.5d.We have exploited this empirical cutoff function to calibrate thecorresponding turbulent diffusion coefficient associated with tidalmixing, having found out that the computed form of the lines of constantturbulence fits qualitatively the empirical shape of the curves ofconstant metallicity. As for larger orbital periods(20d55km/s found by Burkhart(1979) would then be nothing but a manifestation of insufficientlypopulated corresponding area of larger P_orb_.

The Gronbech-Olsen photometry: Transformations to a Hyades-Coma system
In this paper, we consider the zero points of six sets of Stromgren-betaphotometry. The color-index system to which our results are referred isa 'Hyades-Coma' system composed of photometry by Crawford and Perry(1966) and Crawford and Barnes (1969). For V magnitudes, we usemeasurements by Taylor and Joner (1992). Our results are as follows. (1)The zero points of photometry by Gronbech and Olsen (1976, 1977) areoffset from those of the Hyades-Coma system. The offsets can amount toseveral mmag; they appear for V and all color indices except beta, anddepend on right ascension and (usually) declination. (2) These offsetscan be applied to photometry by Stetson (1991), who reduced his resultsto the Gronbech-Olsen system. After correction, Stetson's results for aset of 'transfer stars' differ from comparable data published byCrawford and Barnes (1970). (3) A direct comparison of the transferstars to the Hyades yields consistency between the Hyades-Coma andCrawford-Barnes zero points (for the transfer stars specifically). Thisresult supports a conclusion drawn by Taylor and Joner, and suggeststhat here is some problem with the zero points of Stetson'stransfer-star data. (4) From Stetson's corrected data, one finds thatthe Crawford-Perry zero points for the Hyades are consistent with theCrawford-Barnes zero points for Coma. This result agrees with aconclusion drawn by Taylor and Joner from their own data, and suggeststhat the problem postulated for Stetson's transfer-star data does notextend to his results for the Hyades and Coma.

Ca II H and K Filter Photometry on the UVBY System. II. The Catalog of Observations

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

The Spacelab-1 Very Wide Field Survey of UV-excess objects. IV. The performance of the instrument in combination with optical photometry as a means of identifying stars with peculiar properties.
UV (195 nm) and Stroemgren uvby photometry of a 110 square degree fieldat high southern galactic latitudes are analyzed through a comparison ofi) UV magnitudes for 57 stars of various types common to the publishedTD1 catalogue and the Very Wide Field Camera (VWFC); and ii) observedand theoretical two-colour diagrams. The higher sensitivity of the VWFC(=~0.5magnitude) and its more complete survey are exemplified by thedetection and UV measurement of a series of objects with moderateUV-excess in addition to detection of some very blue objects of variousnature down to fainter than 12th magnitude in the optical domain. Adeeper survey with a VWFC-type instrument could provide a completesample for studies of the group properties of faint blue stars. Duringthe uvby reductions it was found that the usual procedure of plottingresiduals as functions of declination, hour angle and airmass can be apowerful and diagnostic test of photometer rigidity.

Speckle observations of visual and spectroscopic binaries. IV
This is the fourth paper of this series giving results of speckleobservations for 22 visual and 161 spectroscopic binaries. Theobservation was carried out by using the 212 cm telescope of San PedroMartir Observatory in Mexico on 7 nights from July 20 to July 26, 1991.We obtained fringes in power spectra of 19 visual and 11 spectroscopicbinaries (6 newly resolved ones) with angular separation larger than0.06 arcsec. We introduced a new ICCD TV camera in this observation, andwere able to achieve the diffraction-limit resolution of the 212 cmtelescope.

Speckle observations of visual and spectroscopic binaries. III
This is the third paper of this series giving results of speckleobservations carried out for seven visual and 119 spectroscopic binariesat seven nights from May 20 to May 27, 1989, and for 30 visual and 272spectroscopic binaries at 12 nights from June 11 to June 15, and fromAugust 28 to September 3, 1990, using the 212-cm telescope at San PedroMartir Observatory in Mexico. Fringes in the lower spectrum of 31 visualand spectroscopic binaries with angular separation larger than 21 arcsecare obtained. Additionally to two spectroscopic binaries, HD41116 andHD206901, named in the second paper of this series, six spectroscopicbinaries are found each of which has the third component starsurrounding two stars of spectroscopic binary having periodic variationof radial velocity.

The Hyades supercluster in the FK5
The members of the Hyades supercluster brighter than about M(V) = + 4mag and contained in the FK5, or having nearly FK5 quality propermotions, show a convergent point of (A,D) = (6h, + 6.5 deg). The Hyadescluster stars in the FK5 have a mean distance of 46.7 pc. Thesupercluster, as well as the Hyades and Praesepe cluster, populationsrepresent at least three age groups. Standard models indicate ages of 3to 4, 6, and 8 x 10 exp 8 yr, whereas model ages with convectiveovershoot are nearly twice this. Most of the Am and USPC stars in thesupercluster are of the same age. The Ap stars mark the onset of shellhydrogen burning. The photometry of the red giants confirms the agespread and indicates a weakening of CN strength with age. Attention iscalled to the need for further study of NGC 2423 as an effectiveprolusion to understanding the evolution of the supercluster.

A catalogue of Fe/H determinations - 1991 edition
A revised version of the catalog of Fe/H determinations published by G.Cayrel et al. (1985) is presented. The catalog contains 3252 Fe/Hdeterminations for 1676 stars. The literature is complete up to December1990. The catalog includes only Fe/H determinations obtained from highresolution spectroscopic observations based on detailed spectroscopicanalyses, most of them carried out with model atmospheres. The catalogcontains a good number of Fe/H determinations for stars from open andglobular clusters and for some supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds.

Early type high-velocity stars in the solar neighborhood. IV - Four-color and H-beta photometry
Results are presented from photometric obaservations in the Stromgrenuvby four-color and H-beta systems of early-type high-velocity stars inthe solar neighborhood. Several types of photometrically peculiar starsare selected on the basis of their Stromgren indices and areprovisionally identified as peculiar A stars, field horizontal-branchstars, metal-poor stars near the Population II and old-disk turnoffs,metal-poor blue stragglers, or metallic-line A stars. Numerousphotometrically normal stars were also found.

The A and Am-Fm stars. I - The abundances of Li, Al, Si, and Fe
An observational investigation of 25 A and Am stars is presented inwhich a model-atmosphere abundance analysis is used to determine thephotospheric abundances of Li, Al, Si, and Fe. Results of the presentobservations are combined with the observations of Hyades by Burkhart etal. (1989) to develop homogeneous results from a large sample. All ofthe elements except Li are found to be constant as a function oftemperature for Am stars, and Al and Fe are moderately enhanced forA4-F1 stars. The abundance range of Li can be twice that of Al, Si, andFe in Am normal stars, and other stars exhibit Li deficiencies that areinterpreted as indicative of weak evolution. The abundances of Li, Ca,and Zr are also considered in terms of diffusion theory for Am stars,and references to the hydrogen-convection and diffusion zones are made.

Intensive photometry of southern Be variables. I - Winter objects
Results are presented from an intensive photometric campaign on somebright southern Be stars to search for periodic light variations. Inorder to obtain good phase coverage, observations were conducted fromtwo sites with different longitude: ESO and SAAO. Most of the starsobserved are indeed variable with periods close to one day. Results forwinter objects are given.

Starbursts, binary stars, and blue stragglers in local superclusters and groups. I - The very young disk and young disk populations
The distributions in the HR diagram with theoretical time-constant locifor stars in several young clusters and superclusters are compared todemonstrate that 'blue stragglers' in these aggregates are mostfrequently simply single massive (mode B) stars formed in bursts of starformation that occur at discrete intervals in time following theformation of the bulk of the low-mass (mode A) stars in the aggregate.The characteristics of the close binary systems in these aggregates areexamined to show that, in several cases, mass transfer by Roche lobeoverflow has or will occur and that, in some instances, the system wouldhave appeared as a blue straggler prior to the mass-transfer event, and,in other instances, mass transfer will lead to the identification of thesystem as a blue straggler. Thus, it is concluded that the bluestraggler phenomenon has at least two distinct physical origins: it mayoriginate from delayed formation (starbursts) or from 'delayedevolution' in some close binaries (mass transfer from an evolvedprimary).

Li I-resonance-doublet observations and the abundance of lithium in AM and Delta Del stars
In a sample of a few Am, Delta Delphini, and reference main sequence Fstars, the LiI resonance line at 6707 A has been observed. In Am stars,Li may be overabundant, normal, or underabundant with respect to thecosmic abundance; the range is as large as two orders of magnitude, andthe abundance dependence on temperature does not seem simple. In DeltaDelphini stars, Li may be slightly overabundant, normal, orunderabundant, with an abundance range of about two orders of magnitude.It is asserted that both components of the double-line spectroscopicbinary Am star HR 8293 are overabundant in Li. Microscopic diffusionprocesses, possibly connected with mass loss, lead to normal, over-, orunderabundances of Li for the Am stars.

E. W. Fick Observatory stellar radial velocity measurements. I - 1976-1984
Stellar radial velocity observations made with the large vacuumhigh-dispersion photoelectric radial velocity spectrometer at FickObservatory are reported. This includes nearly 2000 late-type starsobserved during 585 nights. Gradual modifications to this instrumentover its first eight years of operation have reduced the observationalerror for high-quality dip observations to + or - 0.8 km/s.

Photoelectric observations of lunar occultations. XVI
A final list of 105 observations is presented including eight cases ofcertain or possible duplicity and two angular diameters. The results for46 Leo (SAO 99172) are combined with previous values to yield adiameter, fully darkened, of 4.01 + or - 0.85 milliarcsec. A detaileddiscussion of occultation and speckle results for Delta Sco is given.

Metallicism among A and F giant stars
132 stars considered as A and F giants have been studied for theirproperties in the Geneva photometric system. It is shown that thissystem to derive the temperature, absolute magnitude and Fe/H value forstars in this part of the HR diagram. 36 percent of the stars of oursample exhibit an enhanced value Delta m2 that can be interpreted interms of Fe/H. The red limit of stars having an enhanced Fe/H value is0.225 in B2-V1 or 6500 K in Teff. This corresponds to the limit definedby Vauclair and Vauclair (1982) where the diffusion timescale is equalto the stellar lifetime and permits the assumption that the diffusion isthe process responsible for the metallicism observed in the A and Fgiants.

A systematic search for members of the Hyades Supercluster. IV - The metallic-line stars and ultrashort-period Cepheids
Bright Star Catalog stars with beta values in the 2.70-2.88 rangecontain 127 members of the Hyades Supercluster, which have been chosenon the basis of the direction of their proper motion. Available radialvelocities confirm supercluster membership for most of these stars.Exceptional regularity is noted in the values of the pulsation constantQ computed for the ultrashort period Cepheids on the basis of knownperiods, model masses and model radii. Outside the center of the Hyadescluster, the largest concentration of supercluster stars is in a regionof 30 pc radius, between 60 and 80 pc above the sun, where 30 percent ofthe expected stars in the temperature range presently discussed aresupercluster members.
